Five-Star Hotel Under the Sea

President Bush may talk about a plan to Mars, but Bruce Jones thinks there is still a healthy thirst for exploration into underwater worlds on our own planet. After growing up with a grandfather in the marine construction(海洋建筑)business, Jones quickly got a feel for the water. He started diving at age 9 and, by the 1980s, began offering advice for those interested in the submarine (海下的) business. By 1993, he was running his own company, U.S. Submarines, which designs and builds submarines for others.

Jones has $40 million spent in building a hotel where the most expensive rooms will be 50 feet under the sea off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. Unlike the Jules Undersea Lodge ― the only undersea hotel now, just off the coast of Key Largo, Fla. ― guests at the Poseidon won’t need to put on a wet suit to their rooms. They also won’t need to worry about changing pressure levels since the rooms will be kept at above-surface pressure. Instead, they can move easily to their $1,500-a-night underwater rooms by escalator (自動(dòng)梯).

“I think there are a large number of people who would be interested,” said Jones, “including anyone who is looking for a different experience.”

Each room will feature strong walls that look out onto coral gardens. There will be controls in each room that guests can use to change the lighting of the underwater worlds outside their windows and to provide food to fish swimming just outside. It sounds exciting― but will it happen? It’s hard to say.

“By now I envisioned (展望) we’d have whole underwater cities,” Cooper said. “It’s about time some of these visions became reality.”

B. the hotel has been built and came into use

C. it will be easy to swim into the underwater rooms

D. visitors will have to wear wet suits against water

75. According to Cooper’s words, his attitudes towards the underwater hotels are ______.

Whether the eyes are “the windows of the soul” is debatable;that they are intensely important in interpersonal communication is a fact.During the first two months of a baby’s life, the stimulus (刺激物) that produces a smile is a pair of eyes. The eyes need not be real:a mask with two dots will produce a smile.Significantly,a real human face with eyes covered will not motivate a smile, nor will the sight of only one eye when the face is presented in profile (側(cè)面).This attraction to eyes as opposed to the nose or mouth continues as the baby matures. In one study, when American four―year―olds were asked to draw people,75 percent of them drew people with mouths, but 99 percent of them drew people with eyes. In Japan.however, where babies are carried on their mother’s back, they do not acquire as much attachment to eyes as they do in other cultures. As a result,Japanese adults make little use of the face either to encode (把…編碼) or decode (理解) meaning. In fact,Argyle reveals that the “proper place to focus one’s gaze during a conversation in Japan is on the neck of one’s conversation partner.”

The role of eye contact in a conversational exchange between two Americans is well defined:speakers make contact with the eyes of their listener for about one second, then dance away as they talk;in a few moments they re-establish eye contact with the listener or reassure themselves that their audience is still attentive, then shift their gaze away once more.Listeners, meanwhile, keep their eyes on the face of the speaker, allowing themselves to glance away only briefly. It is important that they be looking at the speaker at the precise moment when the speaker reestablishes eye contact:if they are not looking, the speaker assumes that they are disinterested and either will pause until eye contact is resumed or will stop the conversation.Just how critical this eye contacting is to the maintenance (維持) of conversational flow becomes clear when two speakers are wearing dark glasses:there may be a sort of traffic jam of words caused by interruption, false starts, and unpredictable pauses.

68.The author is convinced that the eyes are______.

A.of extreme importance in expressing feelings and exchanging ideas

B.something through which one can see a person’s inner world

C.of considerable significance in making conversations interesting

D.something the value of which is largely a matter of long debate

C.whose face is seen from the side

D.whose face is free of any covering

70.According to the passage, the Japanese fix their gaze on their conversation partner’s neck because ________.

A.they don’t like to keep their eyes on the face of the speaker

B.they need not communicate through eye contact

C.they don’t think it polite to have eye contact with him or her

D.they didn’t have much opportunity to communicate through eye contact in babyhood

71.According to the passage,a conversation between two Americans may break down due to ________.

A.one temporarily glancing away from the other

B.eye contact of more than one second

C.improperly-timed pause of eye contact

D.constant adjustment of eye contact

A baby can quickly damage a new mother’s well-laid plans for getting back to pre-pregnancy weight and shape.

The constant demands, together with the exhausting effects of interrupted sleep, can make it hard to find the time and energy to exercise or prepare healthy meals.

Here are some tips for common problems new moms face:

Problem: No time to cook proper meals. When you’re caring for a baby, cooking proper meals seems like a luxury. Instead you rely on convenience meals and processed foods.
Solution: Try to get more support. Friends, family members, and neighbors are often delighted to help, so don’t feel you have to do everything yourself. Use the extra time to prepare some healthy meals. Follow the basic rules of cutting down on fat and increasing fruit and vegetable intake.

Problem: Sugary or high-fat snacks. Tiredness can leave you feeling sleepy, run-down, and in need of an immediate help from sweets and high-fat snacks.
Solution: Turn snacking to your advantage. Eat high-fiber, low-fat, low-sugar snacks; these will fill you up without adding too many calories. For an energy boost, eat a banana, which is high in potassium -- a mineral essential for muscle and nerve function -- or try a handful of raisins (葡萄干), which are high in iron but low in fat.
Problem: No time or energy to exercise. A baby is a constant demand on your time, so you’re too tired or busy to exercise.
Solution: Increasing activity levels will help you obtain a net calorie loss, while toning exercises will tighten your muscles. Though you may feel too tired to do any exercise, it is worth persevering (堅(jiān)持,堅(jiān)忍) because in the long run your energy levels will increase. Involve your baby in your postnatal (產(chǎn)后) exercises; start by walking with the child in a carriage or sling(調(diào)繩;背帶). Swimming is another aerobic (有氧的)exercise that you can both enjoy by joining a mother and baby class. Many pools have childcare facilities, so you can swim a few laps on your own.

Problem: Lack of sleep. The new baby interrupts your sleep, depleting your energy and leaving you tense and exhausted.
Solution: Practice some relaxation techniques whenever you have a few free moments. Meditation, visualization, or yoga can help your body recover and give you more energy.

60. What’s the subject of the text?

A. The influence of babies on their mother

B. Weight-loss solutions for new moms

C. The reasons of new moms’ fatness

D. How to exercise and prepare healthy meals

61. What’s the common problem that new moms don’t face?

A. Living on convenience meals and processed foods.

B. Having sweets to get rid of tiredness and sleepiness quickly.

C. That new moms find it hard to have time and energy to exercise.

D. Sleeping too long can make them fat.

62. The underlined word “depleting” in the passage means ________.

A. consuming       B. disturbing       C. accumulating      D. saving

63. Which of the following is true?

A. It’s impossible to do any exercise with your baby.

B. You can’t swim alone in the pool with a baby.

C. Meditation or yoga can make you refreshed.

D. Low-fat and high- fiber snacks will add you too many calories.

科目: 來源: 題型:閱讀理解

Dear editor,

Several days ago, I heard that a dear friend of mine had killed herself. I was deep in sorrow by the sudden news. I can’t keep calm any longer. I’m always thinking about life and death.

Life is so precious. If we can slip into death in an impulsive (沖動(dòng)的) moment, what use in all our efforts and hopes? Our families, our ambitions, everything is flung into total darkness. And death allows no time for regret.

Nevertheless, the suicide rate increases year by year, particularly of young people. Reasons may vary from person to person, yet I think they share something in common.

First, today’s young people are morally weak. They hunger for success but can not face failure; they are eager to be understood but afraid of opening their hearts to others. They live in a wide world, from east to west, ancient to present, but their hearts beat in a narrow desert, closed tight, unable to communicate. Each becomes an isolated fortress (孤堡), lonely, and weak.

My friend is a good example of that. As a young teacher, she was devoted to her work but was disappointed with her students’ occasional failures. She fell in love with a colleague but he deserted her. With no close friends, disappointed at work and in love, death seemed to her the only remaining choice and she took it.

Another reason for the weakness of today’s youth, in my opinion, comes from society’s pressures. The young are forced to try too hard to succeed. On the other hand, society refuses to accept that children sometimes do fail. But failure is more important because it can teach the young how to win next time.

What can we do to save the desperate young?

56. The passage wants to tell us         .

      A. a lot of young people choose death to escape from the society

      B. the number of people who take suicide is larger and larger

      C. the young people should go to see doctors to solve the spiritual problems

      D. the reason why the young kill themselves lies in two main kinds

57. In the writer’s opinion, failure is         .

       A. the mother of success                       B. the key to success

       C. good for the young                            D. bad for the young

58. Among the following, which one is NOT the cause of “my friend’s death”?

      A. She has too much society’s pressure.

      B. She is not well content with her work.

        C. She is disappointed in love.

        D. She doesn’t get on well with others.

59. The passage suggests those people       would be most likely to take suicide.

       A. who are alone                              B. who are weak-minded

       C. who fail in love                            D. who suffer from society’s pressures
