In the United States many have been told that anyone can become rich and successful if he works hard and has some good luck.Yet, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it.And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is.That is what "Keeping up with the Joneses" is about. It is the story of someone who tries to look as rich as successful and as his neighbors.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself: He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23.That was a lot of money in those days.Young Momand was very proud of his riches. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. But just moving there was not enough. When he saw that rich people rode horses.Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.

20090708

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up.Momand and his wife could not do that. The race ended for them when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They left their wealthy neighborhood and moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it "Keeping up with the Joneses", because "Jones" is a very common name in the United States."Keeping up with the Joneses" came to mean keeping up with the people around you.Momand's series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. That is one reason why they read the "right" books, go to the "right" universities and eat in the "right" restaurants.

Every city has an area where people want to live because others will think better of them if they do.And there are "Joneses" in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses, because no matter what one does, Mr Jones seems always to be ahead.

You are standing under the most famous neon lights in the centre of London, waiting to cross the road.Suddenly the traffic stops. You hear the distant sounds of cheering, clapping and shouting. Then, like a multi-colored (彩色的) train, 2,000 people with wheels on their feet zoom (嗡嗡地疾行) past you.You have just witnessed the London Skate, a twice weekly roller-skate event that attracts hundreds and thousands of people in London.Skate is a completely free tour of the streets of London — the only condition is that you go along on roller-skates.It lasts between two and three hours and by the end of it you have skated between 10 and 12 miles. The skate snakes sound the streets of London along several different routes. Many of the routes pass by tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.Marshals (交通協(xié)調(diào)員) go ahead of the group, stopping the traffic so that people can skate as safely as possible.Everyone is welcome to take part and people from the age of 4 to 63 years old join the fun."I love it very much, it is amazing. It feels just like a carnival (狂歡節(jié))," said Celeste Beverage regular skater.

"It's so exciting to skate in Paris.Everyone skates so fast and puts in their best efforts!" he said. The Paris Roller is well known because of the huge attendance (出席人數(shù)) the presence of marshals (元帥)and the police protection.Paris is a great city for roller-skating because of its long wide streets and smooth surfaces.Roller-skating is also becoming more popular in China among young people and children.Skating fans' favorite places to practise in China are big squares.

How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering (能夠的) things they can do.Perhaps what most separates successful people from others is that they live life "on purpose" —they are doing what they believe they are put here to do.In their opinion , having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do.People want to do business with them because of their commitment (忠誠(chéng)).To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it.Besides, they never easily give up.Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to work hard whatever it takes to achieve their goals.Top achievers always bear in mind what they don't have.Rather than be negative or depressing, they use the knowledge to spur themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

1.What successful people worry about most is ______.

A.to help others                                      B.to live a comfortable life

C.to do their work well                            D.to treat their friends well

A.do a lot of work                                   B.concentrate on their jobs

C.do business with many people              D.control all the things in life

3.The underlined word spur in the passage most probably means ______.

       A.encourage       B.excite        C.relieve         D.force

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of many parents fearful for their children's safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government have said in the past that they will not undertake to provide free transport to the school. But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school's headmaster.

Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part.Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term.

They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

2.How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?

A.By letting the bus run in the morning only.

B.By limiting the number of the students.

C.By obtaining the support from the headmaster.

D.By linking the new bus service with the existing one.

3.The new bus service will be paid for by ______.

       A.the parents                                        B.the local government

C.the bus company                                D.the local government and the parents

4.Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?

A.The bus company will make much more money.

B.The children can choose whatever school they like.

C.The parents can get rid of their worries.
