Londoners are great readers. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books
-especially paperbacks(平裝書),which are still cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the cost of printing. They still continue to buy“proper”books, too, printed on good paper.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in(以……為主) book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which is said to be“the biggest bookshop in the world”to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens' time. Some of these shops stock,or will make efforts to get,any kind of book.but many of them specialize in second-hand books,in art books,in foreign books,in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes solely in books about ballet.
Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books.Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap second-hand books.collectors must go to some less well-known places,to Farringdon Road.for example,in the East Central district of London. Bookshops are the finest buildings in this area.Instead, the booksellers come along each morning and put lots of books on to small barrows(手推車)which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs(業(yè)余愛好者),who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.
1.According to the passage,we know that
A.Londoners like borrowing books from libraries
B.Londoners like buying books, magazines and newspapers
C.Londoners like reading books in libraries
D.Londoners don't like buying“proper”books
2.Chafing Cross Road is well-known for
A.lending books B.publishing books C.printing books D.selling books
3.The underlined word“solely”in the second paragraph means“ ”.
A.wholly B.partly C.only D.seldom
4.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Where expensive new books are sold. B.Where cheap new books are sold
C.Where cheap old books are sold D .Where expensive old books are sold

Everyone has got two personalities——the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control your behavior, but when you asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night,of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don't like to upset people,so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you aren't very confident.
If you sleep on Your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you're always easily upset. You're very stubborn(固執(zhí)的),but you aren't very ambitious(有野心的).You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time

Learning just as much outside the Classroom
Every Thursday afternoon,my art history class meets not in our usual lecture hall hut in the Yale University Art Gallery(美術(shù)館).
We spend our one-hour class discussing two or three of the paintings, many of which are by artists that we have already studied in class.
The professor begins by selecting one work of art .After giving us a quick background on
the artist,he'll open up for class discussion. Everyone is strongly encouraged to give opinions
to the work. Not every piece we study is necessarily famous or striking in appearance and
subject matter, yet we always manage to make some interesting observations.
In America, professors always take every opportunity to push textbooks aside and expose
students to real world experiences.
With some creativity, almost any subject can be applied to such beyond the classroom learning.
My art history class trips to the gallery are but one example.
Many other disciplines (學科)also offer opportunities to learn outside the classroom, for instance, business, psychology, art, journalism and biology.
A friend of mine from Yale taking an advanced psychology course spends every Saturday
working with mentally disabled children.
Her mornings are spent playing with the kids and studying their sometimes uncontrolled behavior. Then in the afternoon she writes a report on her observations.
Students generally appreciate these unique learning opportunities. They're almost always fun and interesting, and professors like them because students learn so much in just a few short months.
No one denies(否認) the value of classroom learning. But it can only take students so far.
Slides and textbooks may do a good job of carrying facts and dates, but creativity and originality (創(chuàng)造性)of thought cannot be taught. They can only be got through first-hand experience.
1.The writer studies art history .
A.in a lecture hall B.in an art gallery
C.in a simple way D.in a practical way
2.To study artists,we should first
A.meet and talk with them B.pay a visit to their hometowns
C.get some information about their background D.copy some works of theirs
3.In American universities it is popular for professors to .
A.create textbooks by themselves
B.teach their lectures through real world experiences
C.a(chǎn)sk their students to memorize the texts
D.share their experiences with the students
4.The writer introduces one of his friends' experiences to us in order to
A.give us an example B.praise the professor
C.praise his friend D.a(chǎn)dvise us to study psychology
5.The writer holds the opinion that
A.learning outside the classroom is the best way
B.teachers should develop students' creativity
C.professors had better shorten their lectures
D.students should put their textbooks away

It's difficult to get the young to listen to anything you say these days. They have shut themselves off from the world with earplugs attached to their personal stereos such as MP3 players. And with more than three million iPods and MP3 players sold in Britain every year.it's not just the young who have been in the personal stereo habit. But at what risk is our hearing?
When MP3 players and iPods are turned to full volume, the sound can reach 104 dB (分貝),the maximum(最大值)allowed by EU safety standards but almost as loud as a pneumatic drill(氣鉆)(110dB)
The advice from scientists is to turn down the volume and limit use of such machines to an hour a day;the producers also recommend taking regular breaks to give the ears a rest.Yet research by the Royal National institute for the Deaf (RNID)showed that 39 percent of the young don't practice safe listening. The worry is that they could be creating problems later in life.
People with good hearing have tiny hair cells that line the inner ear and transmit(傳遞) signals to the brain, which it interprets as sound. When repeatedly exposed to uncomfortably loud noises(loud is defined as above 80 dB),including music through headphones and at concerts, those hair cells require a rush of blood or oxygen, otherwise“they effectively die”. Temporary(臨時的)hearing loss or tinnitus(ringing in the ears) is a sign that hair cells are trying to recover, but over time recovery becomes impossible.
At UK cinemas, sound levels of 110dB have been recorded.Music played in nightclubs is so loud as to be comparable,in some cases,to standing two feet away from an aeroplane as it takes off(110dB).The level at which pain starts to happen for sound is 140dB.
1.When you use MP3 player, you should do the following except
A.turn it to the volume B.take regular breaks
C.use it less than an hour a day D.turn down the volume
2.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Young people like their personal stereos such as MP3 players.
B.More than three million iPods and MP3 players are sold in Britain every year.
C.It is no doubt that sonic British young people’ s hearing is at risk.
D.More than 50 percent of the British young people don't practice safe listening.
3.The highest safe sound shouldn't be louder than
A.80db B.140db C.104db D.110db
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Warning That Fails on Deaf Ears B.MP3 Players——Hearing Killers
C.The Causes of Hearing Loss D.Hair Cells Suffering from Loud Noises
