TUVALU, a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it fears it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered.

But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea.Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50 cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year. Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 centigrade degrees over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川)melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years.

The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.

Should this come true, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to live.

1.We can infer from the second paragraph that ______ .

A.Tuvalu is in danger of being swallowed up by the sea

B.a(chǎn)ll Tuvalu’s islands are about five meters above the sea level

C.drinking water in Tuvalu has been destroyed

D.Tuvalu is often flooded by storms and waves

2.The author uses Tuvalu and Venice as examples in order to explain ______.

A.they are the first places sinking into the sea

B.they are both sinking into the mud where they stand

C.they will disappear in the future

D.their trouble is caused by global warming

3.What does “climate refugees”mean?

A.People who are forced away from their homeland by climate.

B.Climate changes.

C.Rare animals.

D.Climate effect.

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Tuvalu’s nine little islands are less than five meters above the sea level.

B.The average global temperature has risen by 1-3 centigrade degrees over the past 100 years.

C.The warmer temperature causes the sea level to rise.

D.There will be huge climate changes unless the warming is stopped.

Some people who find themselves unable to solve a problem react by just giving up. But it is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures. You may be sure that all young people go through the same difficult process that you are going through: meeting new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities.

If you are unhappy about something, face it. Try to state the problem in a few words, so that you will know exactly what you are up against. Then see if you can “put your finger” on the cause of your unhappiness.

In many cases, we only “think”there is no solution to a particular problem. But often we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack.

For example, a boy wanted to be a debater (辯論家). When he tried out for the debating team as a freshman, the coach thought he was hopeless. He was shy; he had a high-pitched voice; and his posture(體態(tài))was poor. Although he was given little hope of success, he took advantage of every opportunity to debate. He studied successful speakers and sized up(估計(jì)...的大小) his own weaknesses and assets. Then he spent many hours learning all the facts on the topics for debate, and worked at developing good posture and at speaking clearly. By his junior year, he made the school debating team, and in his senior year he was on the winning team in his state. He achieved his goal because he had made a direct attack upon his problem.

Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations. Sometimes it is necessary to change either the tactics(策略)or the goal.

A boy who wants to be a great football player may be too light and not quite fast enough for football. In this situation, becoming a great football player may be an unreasonable goal for him. However, he may become outstanding in tennis or golf, and satisfy his desire to take part in sports.

A girl who has plain features may decide that she cannot win popularity with her face, and so she may try to develop an interesting personality, which eventually will get her much further. In this situation, she must change her method of achieving her goal.

So, although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems, it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

1.What is the main idea discussed in the first paragraph?

    A.Giving up a puzzling problem.

B.Escaping from problems by making excuses for failures.

C.Going through the same difficult process.

D.Testing people’s abilities.

2.The underlined phrase“are up against”in the second paragraph could be best replaced by “_______.”

A.a(chǎn)re fond of          B.a(chǎn)re faced with   C.met with             D.looked at

3.By taking the example of the boy who wanted to be a debater, the author means _______.

A.you are going through new situations, developing new skills, and testing their abilities

B.we can overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack

C.it is necessary to change either the tactics or the goal.

D.it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do

4.Which of the following is the topic sentence of the text?

A.It is not good to escape from problems by giving up or by making excuses for failures.

B.If you are unhappy about something, face it, and try to state the problem in a few words.

C.Although direct attack is often the best way to meet problems, we have to be realistic in judging situations.

D.Although direct attack is often the best way to handle problems, it is important to study the situation and make a wise decision about what to do.

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes(聯(lián)合體) of the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything that goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how many of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best way of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁鐵), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.

The first full-size giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

1.The underlined part“should be well on with”(para.1)most probably means ____ .

    A.complete                                             B.get ready to start

C.a(chǎn)chieve a great deal in                          D.put an end to

2.What is not mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in the third paragraph?

A.Breaking up whatever is breakable.

B.Sharpening metal bars.

C.Separating light elements from the heavy ones.

D.Sorting out small pieces of metal.

3.What’s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants?

A.To deal with wastes in a better way.

B.To protect the environment from pollution.

C.To get raw materials locally.

D.To make much money from those plants.

4.The passage is mainly about ________.

A.a(chǎn) cheap way to get energy       B.the place of recycling plants

C.new ways of recycling wastes    D.the probability of city environment
