I grew up in a small town. My father raised chickens and ran a construction company. I was barely 10 years old when my dad gave me the responsibility (責任) of feeding the chickens and cleaning up the stable. He believed it was important for me to have those jobs to learn responsibility. Then, when I was 22, I found a job in Natchbill at a country music club called the Natchbill Palace. I washed dishes and cooked from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and then went on stage and sang until 2:00 in the morning. It wasn’t long before I became known as a singing cook. I had been rejected so many times by record companies that it was hard not to be discouraged. One night, a woman executive (董事) from a company named Warner Brothers Records came to hear me sing. When the show was over, we sat down and talked and after she left, I said to myself it was one more rejection. A few weeks later, my manager received a phone call – Warner Brothers wanted to sign me to a record deal. Soon after, I released my first record in June 1986. It sold over 2 million copies. My best efforts had gone into every job I’ve ever held. It was the sense of responsibility that made me feel like a man. Knowing that I had done my best filled me with pride, I still feel that way today, even though I have become a well – known signer.
1.Why was the writer once known as the singing cook?
A.Because he was a cook at a country music club.
B.Because he sang for guests while he worked as a cook.
C.Because he often sang while cooking.

2.Who first recognized his talents and helped make his career successful?
A.Warner Brothers.
B.His manager.

How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.
First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering (給人以權(quán)力的) things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live life “on purpose” – they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do – and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment (投身,獻身). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals.
Rather than seeing it negative or depressing they use the knowledge to spur themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

Part of David’s heart muscle grew thick and stiff, keeping the flow of blood. The disease David had lived with for 17 years was slowly keeping his heart from beating.
The night Flora bent forward in front of her computer, everybody else was asleep. for the price, or keeping her husband alive? To do that, she needed to search for the information: a place and someone to fix David’s damaged heart. And she needed to be lucky.
Finally, she found what she needed on a magazine’s web site. When David came into the study early the following morning, she said, “I’ve found it.” and handed him the papers.
David wondered if there was any other way. Then he thought about his wife and kids. He stared at the papers. Only he could make a choice: Should he have the same surgery (外科手術(shù)) that had killed his father, or the one that no one works? This experimental treatment might be his best hope.
The operation theatre was kept freezing cold. David wasn’t frightened, just nervous.
He felt a burning pain, like a burning knife cutting through his heart…
On the EKG screen, the tiny valley in the middle of each peak (高峰) —showing a sign of David’s disease—smoothed out. For the first time in years, he had a normal arterial (動脈) pressure.
“That’s the most unusual thing,” said Flora, excited by the results.

Let us say there is something you don’t know how to do.
In the past if you were determined to learn you might have called a friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local library for a research term. But now a lot of websites are springing up to provide free practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you can think of.
In one sense, these “how-to” sites represent a part of the growing world of online learning.
This tradition founded one of its earliest forms in the FAQs—Frequently Asked Questions files (案卷) —that began on Usenet, the Internet’s global discussion group. These FAQs, many of which still circulate (=go round continuously), took a specific subject and explained it to complete novices.
These sites take the style of a written tutorial and a tone of friendly advice.
Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites is Learn 2.com (www.learn 2.com). It offers nearly 1,000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently for a job interview.
At ehow.com(www.ehow.com), you can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or how to make a movie in eight steps.
