Doing it for the kids
Looking for a chance to share your creative skills and bring a smile to the faces of some disadvantaged kids? The Beijing charity organization Compassion for Migrant Children (CMC), needs volunteers to run one-hour workshops for after-school program.
The program starts on September 10 and runs from 5:30-6:45pm, each school day. It is held at the Dawangjing Community Center, north of Lido. Coordinator Bridget Goddard, 28, said volunteers run their workshops on a variety of themes, such as arts and crafts, music, sport, drama, dance or games. "Any help would be appreciated", Goddard said.
The charity's after-school program has an educational as well as mentoring(輔導) focus. The children are helped with their homework, learn valuable life skills, and take part in the various workshops that are presented by volunteers.
Goddard, of Midlands in the United Kingdom, combines a full-time teaching job at Yew Chung International School with her volunteer work for CMC.
She said many migrant children had trouble adapting to urban life, after moving from the countryside with their parents, who came to Beijing to work. Goddard said behavioral and emotional problems were common, but "dramatic changes" were possible simply by treating the children with compassion. Since she started with CMC, Goddard said she had seen her young charges "come on in leaps and bounds".
For more information, or to register your interest in volunteering for the workshops, e-mail bridget.Goddard@eimc.china.org.

This summer, heavy rains and flooding have caused more than five hundred deaths in South Asia. More than ten million people have been forced from their homes. Huge amounts of cropland, animals and property have been destroyed. Officials and aid groups say a public health crisis threatens about thirty million people throughout India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The World Meteorological Organization says the rain in South Asia is just one of many extreme weather events this year. The United Nations agency announced last week that January and April were the warmest months on record worldwide. The discovery appears to support environmental changes confirmed by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in February. The group said that it was more than ninety percent sure that carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from human activities have been the main cause of global warming.
The World Meteorological Organization also noted extreme weather in other areas. It said heavy rains in China in June affected more than thirteen million people. In February, Mozambique had the worst flooding in. six years. It said record-breaking heat was reported in southeastern Europe and central Russia earlier this year. A full report on weather in two thousand seven will be released at the end of the year.
The UN weather agency says it is working with its partners to establish an early warning system for climate extremes. It is also creating a long-term observation system to study the effects of climate change.
One such effect could be a lack of food and the risk of hunger in developing countries. The head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Jacques Diouf, warned last week that climate change might hurt food production in warm southern areas of the world. He called for an intense scientific effort to develop crops that will grow in future weather conditions. He said one example is genetically changed crops that will grow in extreme temperatures, dry conditions or poor soil.

3. "The group" in Para.2 refers to .
A. the World Meteorological Organization B. the United Nations agency
C. the UN's Intergovernmental Panel D. the UN weather agency
4. Why is "heavy rain in China in June" mentioned in Para.3?
A. To offer an example of extreme weather this year.
B. To show China suffered more than Mozambique.
C. To indicate that China was given more attention.
D. To give an evidence for the full report in weather this year.
5. According to Jacques Diouf, one possible way to solve the problem of the lack of food is .
A. to control the climate changes
B. to raise the food production

Chinese graduates are questioning the value of continuing their education for a master's degree, a survey has found as the number of students applying for further study declines.
More than half, or 52.9 percent of the survey respondents thought it was not worth their while to spend two years on a master's degree, while the rest still thought positively of master degree studies.
The survey, jointly conducted by the Social Research Center of China Youth Daily and the Media Center of the sina.com.cn, covered 7,730 respondents, including 4,865 who had obtained or were pursuing master's degrees.
The survey showed 35.6 percent of the 4,865 regretted starting their master's studies. Ministry of Education figures show 1.28 million people applied for the national entrance exam for master's studies this year, up only 0.55 percent year-on-year. But the number increased by170,000 on average each year from 2001 to 2006, or a yearly 20-percent increase.
The survey also revealed that 48.7 percent of master's students questioned studied only for a diploma and 45.2 percent for a better job.
However, the competitive edge of a master's degree in finding a job seems to have diminished. "I spent half of my time in college for the entrance exam for a master's degree. When I finally got it from a leading university, finding a job was still a problem," said Zhao Chun.
"People began to question the value of master's degrees, which might not be a bad thing. At least, it shows critical thinking. Many people used to go blindly for master's degrees," one respondent was quoted as saying in the survey report.
The survey quoted reasons respondents had given for postgraduate study, including: "My girlfriend is still studying in college"; "I can't leave the abundant Internet resources and cheap accommodation on campus"; and "I was fooled by my teacher and parents."
The survey also showed that 54.7 percent admitted they had no clear career plans before their master's studies, and 17.9 percent thought their choices were made somewhat blindly.

C. A master's degree in finding a job seems less competitive than usual.

Businesses are structured in different ways to meet different needs.
The simplest form of business is called an individual proprietorship. The proprietor(經(jīng)營者) owns all of the property of the business and is responsible for everything. This means that the proprietor gets to keep all of the profits of the business, but also must pay any debts. The law recognizes no difference between the owner and the business
. Two or more people go into business together. An agreement is usually needed to decide how much of the partnership each person controls.
There are limited liability partnerships. These have full partners and limited partners. Limited partners may not share as much in the profits, but they also do not have as many responsibilities. Partnerships can end at any time. But partnerships and individual proprietorships exist only as long as the owners are alive.
The most complex kind of business organization is the corporation. Corporations are designed to have an unlimited lifetime.
Corporations can sell stock as a way to raise money. Stock represents shares of ownership in a company. Investors who buy stock can trade their shares or keep them as long as the company is in business. A company might use some of its earnings to pay dividends(紅利) as a reward to shareholders. Or it might reinvest the money into the business.
If shares lose value, investors can lose all of the money they paid for their stock. But shareholders are not responsible for the debts of the corporation. A corporation is recognized as an entity(實體)——its own legal being, separate from its owners.
But not all corporations are traditional businesses that sell stock. There are nonprofit groups that are also organized as corporations.
