Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home and at work. A person only needs to hear the noise for a little more than one second to be affected.
An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the temporary (暫時的) hearing loss. He did an experiment using a number of students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amount of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams (克) of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great.
The scientist said millions of people in the United States use much larger amounts of aspirn than were used in his experiment. He said these persons faced a serious danger of suffering hearing loss.

So Christmas is over for anther year. We have eaten the last turkey, sandwich, cleared away the last piece of wrapping paper. Sad, isn’t it? But there was one part of Christmas I wasn’t sorry to say goodbye to ---- and that was the television advertisement.
They started in November and they carried on for six weeks. Every time we turned on the television, a sweet voice would suggest some new , very expensive gift that they claimed was all we needed to make our Christmas complete.
I could put up with all the adult gift suggestions. After all, we are all supposedly mature people, and if we are foolish enough to fall for what we hear on the TV adverts, that’s our problem.
But what I found really horrific was the kids’ toy commercials. Every kid under the age of ten was exposed repeatedly to advertising. Every time there was a break in one of the television programs, he’d be persuaded softly to ask his Mum for this new Christmas toy. “Tell her that if she doesn’t buy it for you, she is a failure as a mother. ”
Going through children is the most secret way of advertising. Kids are easily influenced, have not sense of money and an emotional hold over their parents that advertising companies control shamelessly. It’s time something was done to prevent this.
1. Why does the writer think that adult gift suggestions are more acceptable?
A. Because adult are old enough to make a right decision.
B. Because adults are more sensible to advertising than kids.
C. Because gift suggestions are not so attractive to adults.
D. Because adults are used to the advertising on TV.
2. The phrase “to fall for ” most probably means ________________.
A. to be easily exposed to something
B. to feel sorry for something
C. to be tricked into believing something
D. to decide to buy something immediately
3. The word “this” at the end of the passage refers to __________________.
A. TV advertising B. Christmas advertising
C. the way of advertising D. advertising through children
4. The best title for this passage can be _______________________.
A. Toy Commercials on Christmas
B. The TV Advertisement That Really Annoys Me
C. Advertising Companies Should Be Closed
D. Television Advertising Can Not Be Reliable
