For Senior 3 students, choosing which college to attend can be the most exciting and thrilling time in their entire school lives. This is also true for an American girl named Melanie in the film, College Road Trip, which was released in the US on March 7.

Melanie's dad, James Porter, is obsessed(困擾)by security, so he wants Melanie to attend nearby Northwestern University, where she's already been accepted. But Melanie really wants to go to Georgetown in Washington, D.C, where she's been wait-listed.

When she gets an unexpected interview, she decides to go there with some female friends. However, James is concerned about her safety. He wants to protect her. But his presence leads to an endless series of comic encounters(遭遇).

James and Melanie discover her little brother and his pet pig have been hiding in the spare tire compartment (隔間). What should be a simple tire change results in the car rolling down a mountain, forcing them to hike to a nearby hotel. There the pig ruins an outdoor wedding reception.

All these disasters add spice to their trip. Finally a father and a daughter get the chance to really talk to each other.

The film explores the parent-child relationship in a comic way: The discrepancy (不同) between how close James thinks he is to Melanie and how little he actually knows of her plans makes us laugh first and then think.

Forget Miami, Los Angeles and New York. The next big Latin music explosion is on its way in secondary markets across the United States, and the numbers are there to back it up.Among all genres or styles, Latin music was the only one registering growth in 2005.From tiny Vero Beach in northern Florida to Des Moines, Iowa, in the heart of the Midwest, from Charlotte, N.C.to Salt Lake City, Latin music sales are skyrocketing

Wilson says there are two major reasons for the increase. One is simply the Hispanic(說(shuō)西班牙語(yǔ)國(guó)家的)population's increase in specific areas, which encourages stores to carry Latin product for the first time.Second, and perhaps more important, is the fact that major companies—whether dealing in music or not—are addressing the Latin consumer at a corporate (公司的)level, creating Latin departments and hiring Latin ad agencies. One of Handleman's suburban Detroit stores, for example, has expanded its Latin section four times in the last two years.Cities like Milwaukee and Des Moines are now stocking Latin product.

Besides, it also results from economic development. It goes something like this: More often than not, a city or country with a seeming important Hispanic population will suddenly expand its construction or offer affordable housing to those working in larger, neighboring cities. This attracts lower-income workers, many of whom are Latin.Small shops and groceries begin to stock a small selection of music. When the Latin population numbers reach a critical mass, the local mass merchant, if there is one, begins stocking the product.Sooner or later, a local radio station follows; first AM, then FM.Sometimes it's a cable TV show or a small TV station.

Of course, there are other driving forces that should not be forgotten, for example, regional Mexican music.

1.The passage mainly tells readers _____________.

A.that more and more Americans like Latin music

B.what makes Latin music develop fast in American market

C.why Latin music becomes Americans' favorite music

D.that Latin music is bringing in more benefits for Americans

2.The underlined word "skyrocketing" in the first paragraph means________.

     A.changing very quickly                           B.disappearing slowly

     C.recovering slowly                              D.increasing very quickly

3.According to the THIRD paragraph, which shows the right relations among the following things?

①economic development                          ②more Latin workers

③shops' stock of Latin music                             ④local radio station

⑤small TV station                                ⑥the development of Latin music

        A                          B                          C                             D

4.Suppose that passage doesn't finish, which of the following may be discussed next?

A.The variety of Latin music in America.

B.The economic development in Hispanic area.

C.The historic development of Mexican music.

D.The driving forces of regional Mexican music

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2008.While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries, saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before. People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect on our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

1.Why was the bike so important to the couple?

A.The man’s job was bike racing.            B.It was their only possession.

C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed.               D.They used it for work and daily life.

2.We can infer from the text that _______

A.the couple worked 60 hours a week.     B.people were busy before Christmas

C.the stranger brought over the bike        D.life was hard for the young family.

3.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.The author’s husband often parked the bike beside the back door.

B.The author used to get to work by bike.

C.Several strangers offered bikes to them, but they only accepted one of them.

D.Somebody had stolen their bike before, but soon returned it to the author.

4.What do the couple learn from their experience?

A.Strangers are usually of little help.       B.One should take care of their bike.

C.News reports make people famous.     D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.

Honesty comes in many forms.First there’s self-honesty.Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account).I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel.Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well.I was really good at it.I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass.I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job.I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us.After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road.Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit (儲(chǔ)蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.

1.The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first parapraph means “________”.

A.to be honest                                               B.to be unreal

C.to become clear                                          D.to come from an imagined world

2.Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?

A.Be your true self rather than follow others.

B.Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.

C.Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.

D.Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.

3.What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?

A.honesty can be of great help.

B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one.

C.Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.

D.One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.

4.In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express ________.

A.one must be brave to be honest

B.it’s difficult to be honest when others are not

C.one should be honest when making a deposit

D.honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future

It is well known that the Japanese people’s love of fish is almost as strong as a bee’s interest in honey. As fish populations were decreasing, fishing companies were forced to fish further and further away from the shore. Then they had a big challenge — how to keep the fish fresh for longer. So they decided to keep the fish stored in freezers on the boats. But the public did not like frozen fish. So again the fishing companies had a new bigger challenge. What they decided to do was to have fish tanks on their boats. After catching fishes, they would put them in the tanks and keep them living there until they got back to shore. But in this protected environment, lacking predators (掠食者), the fish stopped moving around. The Japanese public felt these dull fish did not taste fresh, which had an unpleasant effect upon sales. Once again the fishing companies had an even bigger challenge …

Stop for a minute! Before we go any further, I would like to ask “What are your challenges? How do you handle an unexpected challenge? ” May I think it this way that you should try to attack your challenges? Conquer them with a Swiss Army knife. Take the most proper and simple tool that you can adopt to deal with your situation.

Now back to our story. How did the Japanese finally figure out the fresh fish problem? Sharks! You might think the same. Sharks were caught and put into the tanks with other fishes. Don’t sharks EAT fish? Well, they do eat a few fish, but they did also keep more fish active and alert. The fish stay fresh because they are challenged.

Now, try to keep yourself fresh by finding your own shark to offer yourself a challenge in your own business and career.

Every person leaves a footprint. That’s what I learnt when I started to work as a private investigator 10 years ago. People pay restaurant bills with their bank card, check into hotels                or travel around. In every case, they leave a trace. And because of this, I’m able to track them down even when they don’t want to be found.

The first thing I do when I want to find out where someone is staying is to go to the neighbourhood where he used to live. It’s human nature to tell stories — which is why neighbours will tell me all they know when I ring at their houses. Sometimes, someone even talks about his friend’s dishonesty. Then I produce a pattern of my subject’s life: if he likes to have a holiday in Spain or in Italy, if he prefers two or three-star hotels and where he might hide his assets (資產(chǎn)). When I’ve got this life pattern, I start my research.

Nine times out of 10, I find the people I’m looking for. I once investigated a lorry supplier who owed £500,000 to a subcontractor (分包商). The subcontractor wanted to find out if it was worth bringing charges against the supplier. I found out the supplier had moved assets to his son, who founded a new company offering the same product. It was all done within the law. There was no money to be got from that operation.

However, I asked the son if I could speak to his father and he told me that his parent was on a long holiday in Spain and wouldn’t be back for a while. It didn’t take me long to find out that the father wasn’t in Spain.

I went back to the son and this time he told me that his father might in Bulgaria, and I found him doing winter sports in a beautiful mountain area. He was living in a big house on a large piece of land he had bought for ,000. This was exactly the kind of asset my customer was looking for.

1.We learn from the text that a private investigator is one who         .

A.follows people and reports on what they do

  B.helps people start businesses

C.gives advice to people about the law

  D.settles arguments between companies

2.Why does the author visit the place where his subject used to stay?

A.To find out his hidden assets.          B.To gather information about him.

C.To discover why he is dishonest.       D.To find out where he spends his holiday.

3.The lorry supplier moved his assets to his son in order to ________

A.pass on his debt to his son

B.double the business of his company

C.let his son take over his lorry business

D.prevent paying back the money he owed

4.We may infer from the text that the subcontractor might _________

A.bring charges against the lorry supplier’s son

B.give up hope of settling the debt

C.sell the big house in Bulgaria

  D.get his money back
