People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there.Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals.Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.

About 5,000 years ago,the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represrnt the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet.

The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died ,scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he  was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip .But , for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.

By the year 1,000 BC,people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing . The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system . This was because each sign , or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet is now used all over the world.

These days ,we can write down a story ,or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawing , photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily ,and they can make a story much more interesting.

   A. The Egyptian signs later became a particular alphabet.

   B. The Egyptians liked to write comic-strip stories.

(湖南省長(zhǎng)沙市一中2010屆高三第九次月考C篇)

Group of British charities has teamed up with British film actor Bill Nighy and producer Richard Curtis to campaign for what they call a "new deal between banks and society." They want to put a 0.05 percent tax on financial transactions between banks that don't involve the public in order to raise money for social services and to fight poverty and climate change. The run on the British bank Northern Rock in September 2007 marked the beginning of the world banking crisis in Britain. In the end, the British and other governments spent hundreds of millions of dollars bailing out troubled financial institutions.

Now a group of charities and celebrities has launched a campaign to get some of the money back. They call it the Robin Hood Tax after the legendary English folk hero who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. Max Lawsom is with the humanitarian advocacy group Oxfam. "Basically, trillions of dollars change hands every day between the banks. What we're saying is we could take a tiny slice of that, 0.05 percent, which could raise hundreds of billions of dollars to help for poverty in rich countries, jobs in the U.S., jobs in the UK, but also for poverty in Africa as a result of people dying because of the economic crisis," Lawson said.

That's what real-life bankers are saying, too. Brian Mairs is the spokesman for the British banking association. "It's not something that would work in the real world," he says, "Certainly not at the moment when we still have disputed trade agreements. We're indeed having cross border wars. The idea of there being a single tax which is imposed ( 強(qiáng)加)across the world is simply unbelievable. "Organizers say they want G20 countries to participate, and they're starting an online grassroots movement to pressure world leaders. It's on Twitter and Facebook.

"You've had thousands of people sign up to support the Robin Hood Tax and talk about it on Twitter. Interestingly, they've now started tweeting (鳥(niǎo)叫) to their politicians," Jonathan Tench, Oxfam's parliamentary officer said. Supporters can become "merry men and women" by putting a green mask on their online photo, or printing one to wear. If online reaction is any indicator, people are largely in favor. Some British banks are posting record profits and giving large bonuses to executives. Observers say that's causing public outrage(憤怒) against bankers that could boost the campaign. Campaigners even projected their message on the side of the Bank of England. It was one way they say to show bankers that the writing is on the wall.

66. From the passage we can see the purpose of putting a 0 .05 percent tax on financial transactions between banks that don’t involve the public is ________ .

A. to deposit more money in banks to fight the crisis

B. to withdraw more money from banks to solve the problem

C. to collect some money during the transactions by taxing a bit higher

D. to rob the banks of their money

67. Why do they call the campaign “ the Robin Hood Tax” ?

      A. Because Robin Hood is a millionaire.

      B. Because Robin Hood robbed the rich to help the poor.

      C. Because it was Robin Hood that made the law of taxation.

      D. Because Robin Hood is a banker.

68. What does the sentence “"It's not something that would work in the real world," in the third paragraph imply?

      A. Brian Mairs thinks it difficult to carry out the campaign for the moment.

      B. Brian Mairs is strongly against the campaign for the moment.

      C. Brian Mairs speaks highly of the campaign for the moment.

      D. Brian Mairs appeals to other businesses to join in in future.

69. If the idea mentioned in this passage comes true, what do you think the public opinion will be?

      A. Neutral(中立的)  B. Supportive  C. Disagreeable  D. Objective

70. If zhe problem of global poverty is to be settled, ___________.

      A. more taxes on banks is the only solution

      B. American and British support comes first

      C. international co-operation and support are essential

      D. the public should force the leaders to take actions

(湖南省長(zhǎng)沙市一中2010屆高三第九次月考B篇)

We all know that the normal human daily cycle of activity is of some 7—8 hours’ sleep alternation with some 16—17 hours’ wakefulness and that, broadly speaking, the sleep normally coincides with (與一致) the hours of darkness. Our present concern is with how easily and to what extent this cycle can be modified.

The question is no more an academic one. The ease, for example, with which people can change from working in the day to working at night is a question of growing importance in industry where automation calls for round-the-clock working of machines. It normally, takes from five days to one week for a person to adapt to a reversed routine of sleep and wakefulness, sleeping during the day and working at night. Unfortunately, it is often the case in industry that shifts are changed every week; a person may work from 12 midnight to 8 a.m. one week, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the next, and 4 p.m. to 12 midnight the third and so on. This means that no sooner has he got used to one routine than he has to change to another, so that much of his time is spent neither working nor sleeping very efficiently.

The only real solution appears to be to hand over the night shift to a number of permanent night workers. An interesting study of the domestic life and health of night-shift workers was carried out by Brown in 1957. She found a high incidence (發(fā)生率) of disturbed sleep and other disorders among those on alternating day and night shifts, but no abnormal occurrence of theses phenomena among those on permanent night work.

This latter system then appears to be the best long-term policy , but meanwhile something may be done to relieve the strains of alternative day and night work by selecting those people who can adapt most likely to the change of routine. One way of knowing when a person has adopted is by measuring his body temperature. People engaged in normal daytime work will have a high temperature during the hours of wakefulness and a low one at night; when they change to night work the pattern will only gradually go back to match the new routine and the speed with which it does so parallels, broadly speaking, the adaptation of the body as a whole, particularly in terms of performance. Therefore, by taking body temperature at intervals of two hours throughout the period of wakefulness it can be seen how quickly a person can adapt to a reversed routine, and this could be used as a basis for selection. So far, however, such a form of selection does not seem to have been applied in practice.

61. Which of the following is WRONG?

A. Body temperature may act as an indication of a worker’s performance.

B. The selection of permanent night shift workers solves problems of the round-the-clock working system.

C. Taking body temperature at regular intervals can show how a person adapt to the changes of routine.

D. Disturbed sleep occurs less frequently among those on permanent night or day shift.

62. Why is the question of “how easily people can get used to working at night” not mere an academic one?

A. Because few people like to reverse the cycle of sleep and wakefulness.

B Because sleep normally coincides with the hours of darkness.

C. Because people are required to work at night in some fields of industry.

D. Because shift work in industry requires people to change their sleeping habits.

63. It is possible to find out if a person has adapted to the changes of routine by measuring his body temperature because ________ .

A. body temperature changes when the cycle of sleep and wakefulness alternates.

B. body temperature changes when he changes to night shift or back

C. the temperature reverses when the routine is changed.

D. people have higher temperatures when they are working efficiently.

64. The main problem of the round-the- clock working system lies in _______.

A. the inconveniences brought about to the workers by the introduction of automation.

B. the disturbance of the daily life cycle of workers who have to change shifts too frequently.

C. the fact that people working at night are often less effective.

D. the fact that it is difficult to find a number of good night workers

65. The best solution for implementing ( 貫徹)the 24-hour working system seems to be _________ .

A. to change shifts at longer intervals

B. to have longer shift

C. to employ some people to work on night shift only

D. to create better living conditions for night workers

After so much discussion — featured by intense media attention and China's repeated warnings — US President Barack Obama finally met the Dalai Lama at the White House on Thursday. With this latest move to test China's limit of tolerance, Obama has hit a home run to complete his months-long season of a game called "antagonizing (敵對(duì)的) China". At least we hope so. After all the recent tensions in Sino-US relations, a half-time break is what both sides desperately need. But it is still too early to have a sigh of relief.

Thanks to his vow to "get much tougher" with China, Obama has struck nearly every note to create the cacophony (嘈雜的聲音) against a country that he once promised not to contain. From the US$6.4 billion arms sales to Taiwan to issues related to currency rates and Internet freedom, Obama has criticized China in every possible front. So much that no one can say for sure whether China-US relationship is strong enough to survive all the damages done. It is up to Washington to show its sincerity to begin again the work of repairing the damaged relations.

It usually takes some time for US leaders to learn the rules of their China policy.

Bill Clinton had argued that Washington "should not reward China with improved trade status when it has ... failed to make sufficient progress on human rights". George W. Bush had pledged to do "whatever it took" to defend Taiwan. But it did not take them long to come to terms with reality. China, with a quarter of the world's population and a fast growing economy, means a lot to the US and the world. It does both sides absolutely no good if the two countries collide rather than cooperate. It would have been foolish not to understand this at an early date. In a speech Obama made during his visit to Shanghai in November last year, Obama quoted a Chinese proverb "consider the past, and you shall know the future". Hopefully he really knows what he quoted.

56. What is the most appropriate title according to the passage?

A. US should spare no efforts to defeat antagonizing China

B. President Obama finally met the Dalai Lama

C. All the previous US Presidents didn’t have good terms with China

D. US should move to repair China ties after Dalai meeting

57. What does the underlined word “collide” in the last paragraph probably mean?

A. work together     B. help each other     C. contradict        D. blame

58. From Paragraph 2 we can see Obama’s attitude towards China is getting tougher. Of all the things he did, which of the following is NOT included?

A. Personal donation to Taiwan                B. Arms sales to Taiwan

C. Issues related to currency rates              D. Internet freedom

59. According to the passage, why did the US leaders come to terms with reality?

A. Because China has the largest population in the world and is the largest market.

B. Because China’s economy develops so fast that it gives US more and more help.

C. Because China’s amazing growth makes US Presidents adjust their policies.

D. Because US Presidents are more clever than leaders in any other countries.

60. What does Obama’s quotation during his visit to Shanghai last year “consider the past, and you shall know the future” mean?

      A. History proves US will respect its competitor in the long run.

      B. It will be some time before US gives in to China in the end.

      C. US Presidents daren’t face the reality and are not willing to either.

      D. The future of US will be disappointing in comparison with China.

Although women lead healthier, longer lives, the cruel perception that they reach their sell-by date and become “old” sooner than men is widespread in the workplace, research shows.

A survey of more than 2,600 managers and personnel professionals showed that age discrimination is not only common in the workplace, but is full of inconsistencies(矛盾). Six in ten managers thought that they had suffered from age discrimination——usually because they were turned down for a job for being too old or too young. Yet more than a fifth admitted that they used age as a condition when they employ new workers.

Although the survey found widespread agreement that older workers were better than younger colleagues when it came to reliability, commitment, loyalty and customer service, these qualities were not necessarily considered to be worthy of advancement. More than half of respondents believed that workers between 30 and 39 were the most likely to be advanced in their company, with only 2 per cent citing (引證)50-year-olds or above.

Dianah Worman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that there was anecdotal evidence that people were considered old at different ages in different sectors. “We heard of one man working in IT who said he was considered too old by the age of 28,”she said. “There was no evidence to suggest that older workers were less valuable to companies than younger workers, in fact the opposite was often true because older workers often brought experience. ” she added.

The findings also suggested that the Government’s ideas on age in the workforce may also be out of step with reality.

Well before the 15th century, an Anglo-Saxon custom required that a prospective bridegroom break some highly valued personal belonging. Half of the broken token was held by the father of the bride and the other half by the groom. A wealthy man was expected to split a piece of gold or silver.

The earliest engagement rings were also used as wedding rings, serving to seal an act of sale which transformed ownership of a daughter from father to husband. Such rings were usually of solid gold to prove the groom’s worth.

For Roman Catholics, the engagement ring became a required statement of Nuptial intent(結(jié)婚意向), as decreed by Pope Nicholas I in 860 A. D. The engagement ring was to be of valued metal, preferably gold, which for the husband-to-be represented a financial sacrifice.

Signifying enduring love, and chosen for its durability, the diamond was chosen for the engagement ring. The diamond’s fire is also associated with “l(fā)ove’s clear flame,” given by Medieval Italians because of their belief that the diamond was created from the flames of love.

“ A very disruptive(擾亂型的) six-year old child kicked my legs and clawed at my hand,”said one teacher.  “I  broke up a fight and was kicked between my legs,”said another. Many people have heard stories like this.  But the situation is more worrying still and it involves parents.

Every child , regardless of the circumstances into which they are born, has the right to achieve their potential, regardless of their parents’  wealth and class.  And we recognize that, as a nation,it is a long way to achieve this goal .But rights come with responsibilities and what worries people is that we are in danger of neglecting the latter.

Far too many children are behaving badly at school, even to the point of being violent to staff. This is terrible enough, but it is hard to be surprised since many children are just mirroring the behavior of their parents. Too many are starting school unable to hold a knife and fork, unused to eating at a table, and unable to use the lavatory properly.

We are in danger of becoming a nation of families living separate lives under one roof. The bedroom, once a place to sleep, has become the living space for the young.  Spending hours in front of computer screens, on social networking sites or being immersed in computer games, children and young people spend little time with their parents. Parents are unable to monitor just what their children are watching.

Schools cannot right the wrongs of society and teachers cannot become substitute parents. Both parties need to work together. Parents must be helped and given confidence to take back control. They are responsible for setting boundaries for their children’s behavior and sticking to those boundaries when the going gets tough. They are responsible for setting a good example to their children and for devoting that most precious of resources---time----so that children come to school ready and willing to learn.

56. In the opinion of the writer, what problem do people ignore?

A. The school violence.

B. The pressure of students’ learning

C. The right to achieve students potential.

D. the responsibilities of the students.

57. The writer’s attitude to the behaviors of parents may be that of ________.

A. dissatisfied          B. unconcern     C. understadning    D. tolerance

A. parents and children live in their separate rooms

B. parents care little about children’s life at home

C. children don’t live with their parents in the same room

D. at home children live a different life from that of parents

59. From the last paragraph, we can infer that______.

A. schools can’t correct the wrongs that society does to teachers

B. teachers have no responsibility for playing the role of parents

C. parents should spend time with children making them ready to learn

D. students are responsible for making themselves known in society

60. What might be most suitable title for the passage?

  1. Children’s behavior at school is worrying people

Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history.Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history.

The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past.I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the thifigs that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes "the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we don't seem to learn from history." Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this.

A second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can- not even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必說(shuō)) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be.

I teach my children history, for one more reason.I purchased a set of historical audio (錄音機(jī)) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over.It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself.I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr.if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished.I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.

46.What message can we get from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 ?

A.Many people aren't clever enough to learn well from the past.

B.Many people fail to make good use of history and make the same mistakes.

C.Many people feel it hard to understand history.

D.Many people have no interest in studying history.

47.In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _______________.

A.it makes the current political situation go smoothly

B.it helps us realize the importance of historical events

C.it helps us understand why things are the way they are

D.it helps people accept the present situation where they live

48.Some historical figures are mentioned in the last paragraph to show ______________.

A.people can be inspired to do good, while also learning to fight against evil

B.people may also learn from bad historical figures

C.more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements

D.today’s people can also achieve what they achieved

49.What would be talked about in the following paragraph?

       A.How to teach history effectively.

B.Some negative reasons for studying history.

C.How to get more people to study history.

       D.Some bad historical figures.

50.The main purpose of this passage is to ____________.

A.ins[me the parents to teach their children history

B.show the importance of history in politics

C.explain the reasons why children study history

D.introduce the writer' s own way of teaching history

Have you ever heard the story of the four-minute mile? Many years ago, people believed that it was impossible for a human being to run a mile in less than four minutes until Roger Banister proved it wrong in1954.

What happens if you put an animal in a pond? Any animal, big or small, will swim its way through. What happens when someone, who does not know how to swim, falls in deep waters? They drown. If an animal who has not learned swimming could escape by swimming, why not you? Because you believe you will drown while the animal does not.

Have you ever wondered why the letters are organized in a particular order on hour keyboard? You might have thought it is to increase the typing speed. Most people never question it. But the fact is that this system was developed to reduce the typing speed at a time when typewriter parts would jam if the operator typed too fast.

These three cases show the power of our beliefs. There is no other more powerful directing force in human behavior than belief. Your beliefs have the power to create and to destroy. A belief delivers a direct command to your nervous system.

I used a snake in my workshops for children to show them how unrealistic some of their beliefs are. Students of a school in India, said snakes were slippery, slimy (黏糊糊的) and poisonous. After doing an exercise for changing beliefs, they handled my snake and found it to be dry and clean. They also remembered that only three types of poisonous snakes exist in India.

Did this story end the way you thought? Review your beliefs now and find out which ones you need to change.
