A conflict at work is common. If you can avoid conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.
★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.
★ Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn't said! Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It's essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point.
★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don't understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.
★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it's a great way to move forward.

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First she told them how the student made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference.”
Afterwards the teacher told the students to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgement ceremony.
One of the boys in the class went to a junior manager in a nearby company and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons, and told him what it was all about.
Later that day the junior manager went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a bad-tempered fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior manager asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.
The junior manager took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss’s jacket above his heart. Then he gave him the last extra ribbon, and repeated what the boy had told him.
That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office when one of the junior managers came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says ‘Who I Am Makes A Difference’ on my jacket. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honor you.”
“I’m really busy around all day and when I come home I don’t pay a lot of attention to you and sometimes I scream at you, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. You’re a great kid and I love you!”
The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn’t stop crying. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, “I was planning on committing suicide tomorrow, Dad, because I didn’t think you loved me. Now I don’t need to.”

Maybe you’re really busy. Maybe you don’t have much to say. Or maybe you’re just lazy. Not a problem. This free service works by letting you broadcast a group text message to your friends’ mobile phones from either your own phone, an instant message or an online form at twitter.com. All your notes are then stored and displayed on your personal profile page on the site, which includes links to your friends’ Twitter pages, a thumbnail picture of your choice, and a short bio. All this is what the new service Twitter can bring you. Just remember to keep it short: posts are limited to 40 characters, and the topic is, invariably, “What are you doing?”
More often than not, it turns out, Twitter’s 100,000 members--twice as many as it had just a month ago, according to Twitter business development director Biz Stone--are simply killing time. Even Presidential hopeful John Edwards is on it, although he seems to be the only one thinking about more than lunch. As I type this, Caroline is mulling over some Girl Scout cookies, Ian Hocking is “waiting for Jessica to arrive so we can eat!” and Hlantz is “having a nice cup of Soft Starmint tea.”
The chatter (閑話) about Twitter turned into a virtual roar two weeks ago during the South by Southwest Multimedia Festival in Austin, Texas, when the barebones service owned by Blogger founder Evan Williams, 34, was named the best blogging tool and attendees used it to meet up at parties. Nevertheless, Twitter has been the top term on blog search engine Technorati for the past two weeks.
Plenty of people would happily have Twitter silenced, rather than tolerate the beeping alert for yet another new text message. But I’m betting that Twitter will get a lot noisier before netizens move on to the next new thing. We cyber-junkies need a new thrill, and what is better than a service like Twitter that combines social networking, blogging and texting? And if you don’t like it, well, in the words of one Twit from San Francisco, “I’m so sick to death of Twitter-haters. If you don’t like it, why waste your time writing, reading, or talking about it?”
68. This text is intended to __________.
A. point out the virtues and faults of Twitter
B. tell people how to use Twitter to communicate
C. give a general outline of Twitter. com
D. introduce a new and easy way of instant communication
69. According to the text, Twitter is designed mainly for the purpose of ___________.
A. promoting products and services B. talking about small daily things
C. discussing serious social matters D. attracting voters for presidential election
70. We know from the text that Twitter may be superior to Blogger in that ________.
A. it limits each user’s texting under 140 words
B. it saves users’ time and thinking
C. it can be easily operated through users’ mobile phones
D. it is newly invented by Blogger owner Evan Williams
71. By quoting one Twit from San Francisco, the author implies that ___________.
A. like it or not, Twitter will be accepted by more and more people
B. if one doesn’t like Twitter, he/she can choose not to mention it
C. writing, reading and talking about Twitter is a waste of time
D. twitter users naturally have a strong dislike for non-Twitter users

Close relationships, thought to help communication by giving speakers a common context, are actually more likely to make crossed wires than when strangers are involved, a new study suggests.
Because close colleagues and friends already share so much common knowledge that they often use short, ambiguous(模糊的) messages which can lead to misunderstandings.
“People are so used to talking with those with whom they already share a great deal of information that, when they have something really new to share, they often present it in a way that they assume the person already knows it.” says study-team member Boaz Keysar.
Keysar and his graduate student, Shall Wu, trained 40 pairs of undergraduate students to memorize made-up names and descriptions of strange shapes. In each pair, the “director” had to communicate the identity of one of the 24 shapes. The partner had to use the information to choose the correct shape from a set of three images on a computer monitor.
Half of the partners studied only the first six shapes, while the others learned the first 18 shapes. The directors, who had memorized all the shapes, were aware of their partners’ knowledge levels of the shapes.
In the pairs with the most shared knowledge, the directors were more likely to rattle off (快速背出)shape names, compared with pairs with little knowledge overlap(重合), in which the directors were more likely to describe the actual shapes. Not surprisingly, participants with more shared knowledge were twice as likely to ask for clarification as those with less overlap.
Language itself can be confusing. “The reason all this is happening at all is that language in general is ambiguous,” said Keysar.
He recalls an ambiguous billboard near a stadium holding a Rolling Stones concert that night. The billboard read, “Avoid LSD tonight.” (注:LSD常作”迷幻藥”的縮略語(yǔ))
Hmmm? “It was about Lake Shore Drive, and I’m sure the writer of the sign didn’t realize he was being ambiguous,” Keysar said.
“Even though miscommunication can lead to missed meetings or deadlines, people are often unaware when their language is ambiguous,” Keysar added, “We don’t realize we say things that are ambiguous,” he said, “and that’s a problem.”
64. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Electric wires joined together. B. Riddles hard to figure out.
C. Misunderstandings in communication. D. Offensive remarks.
65. In Keysar’s experiment, which of the following gives more accurate descriptions of the shapes?
A. The “directors” of the pairs with little shared knowledge.
B. The “directors” of the pairs who shared more knowledge.
C. The partners whose directors rattle off shape names.
D. The partners whose directors give clear clarifications.
66. It can be inferred from the example of the billboard that _________.
A. most people know what LSD usually refers to
B. local people would not misunderstand the meaning of LSD
C. the writer of the sign means to play jokes on those attending the concert
D. people sometimes ignore the limitation of shared knowledge
67. By this passage, the author mainly wants to say ___________.
A. ambiguous language can lead to misunderstandings
B. familiarity can mess up communication
C. accurate descriptions of identity help guess shapes
D. close relationships do not mean good communication
