While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with another alcohol related danger: drunken pedestrians(行人).

Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are intoxicated more frequently, and with higher blood alcohol levels, than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents, various studies have shown. Forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10, which by law in many states signifies intoxication(醉酒), compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data.

Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2,500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7,000, or one of every seven highway accidents resulting in death.

“We’re dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety problem,” said Richard Bloomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc, in Norwalk, Coon.

Bloomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research council’s Transportation Research Board(TRB) in Washington in January.

Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Culprits, who chairs the board’s committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers have been confused about how to prevent disasters.

A Chinese couple tried to name their baby“@”,saying the character best represents their love for the child, according to an official trying to whip the national language into shape. The unusual name stands out especially in Mandarin(普通話),which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke(多筆畫的)characters to represent words. “The whole world uses it to write emails, and translated into Chinese it meanshe A. None               ‘love him’”, the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the

State Language Commission Li Yuming.

While the @ symbol is familiar to Chinese email users, they often use the English word “at” to sound it out. With a drawn-out “t”, this sounds something like “ai ta”, or “l(fā)ove him”, to Mandarin speakers. Li says the name is an extreme example of people's increasingly adventurous approach to Mandarin, as commercialization and the Internet break down conventions(習(xí)俗).

Another couple tried to give their child a name that in English sounds like “King Osrina”.

Li did not say if officials accepted the“@”name. But earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using Arabic numerals and foreign languages. Sixty million Chinese face the problem that their names use ancient characters so uncommon that computers cannot recognize them and even fluent speakers are left scratching their heads, said Li, according to a transcript on the government website. One of them is the former Premier Zhu Rongji, whose name has a rare “rong” character that gives newspaper editors headaches.

56. Why did the Chinese couple try to name their baby“@”?

  A. Because they wanted their baby to have a special narne.

  B. Because they wanted their baby to haw an international name.

  C. Because the @ symbol is familiar to email users all over the world.

  D. Because die@symbol sounds something  like “ai ta”,which means “l(fā)ove him” in Chinese.

57. It can be inferred that       .

  A. Li Yuming is in favor of the baby's name

  B. many Chinese people use Arabic numerals in their names

  C. a majority of the Chinese people are having longer names

  D. there is little possibility for the“@”name to be officially accepted

58. The underlined part in the passage probably means“       ”.

  A. even native speakers find it hard to accept these strange names

  B. even native speakers can't find these characters in their computers

  C. even those who are expert at Chinese can't recognize these characters

  D. even those who are expert at Chinese find it hard to accept these names

For years experts have argued that poor households are consuming less nourishing food than the rest of the population.

But a survey of some of the lowest earners in Britain shows the nutritional value of what they eat is little different to everyone else.

In fact, the same deficiencies in diet were shared by all the population and the findings suggest that poor eating choices are far more widespread than previously suspected - affecting many wealthier families.

These included low fruit and vegetable consumption, not eating enough oily fish and eating too much saturated fat and sugar.

“This is a large and significant study and it shows we are all eating just as bad a diet as each other,” said Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University.

The poorest families were eating only slightly more sugar and slightly less fruit and vegetables, according to the study of 3,728 respondents in the bottom of the population.

Alison Tedstone, head of nutritional science at the Food Standard Agency, said: “ Overall, people on low incomes have less than ideal diets, but their diets are only slightly worse than those of the rest of the population.”

The study also showed that low earners are choosing to eat unhealthily. Their food choices were not linked to their income, their access to shops or their cooking skills.

The findings appear to contradict assumptions that the poor cannot afford healthier foods or are too far away from shops that sell them.

The Low Income Nutrition and Diet Survey showed that like the rest of the population, the poor's daily fruit and vegetable intake on average is below the recommended five portions. Fewer than 10 per cent of respondents hit this target, while around 20 per cent ate less than a portion per day.

More than three quarters (76 per cent) of men and 81 per cent of women did less than one 30-minute session of moderate or vigorous exercise per week

Some 45 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women were smokers.

This compares with 28 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women in the general population.

56. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

   A. Whether the poor or the rich maybe have a bad diet.

   B. Even the poor can enjoy enough fruit and fish consumption.

   C. Only the poor have a bad diet.

   D. The study was conveyed in both the rich and the poor.

57. What kind of persons maybe eat most sugar?

   A. The rich.             B. Men.                        C. The poorest.             D. Women

58. From the passage, we can learn __________.

   A. the poor choose unhealthy food because of low income

   B. having no access to shops also leads to the poor’s bad diet

   C. the poor’s daily fruit intake is as much as general people

   D. the number of smokers in the poor is bigger than that in general people

59. What’s the best title of the passage?[

   A. The poor’s healthy problem.                    B. Keep off junk food.

C. How to have a good diet.                       D. A diet survey.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.

“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How you like it?” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”

Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.

Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.

No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”

But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.

“There’s still a lot strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College, “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”

Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.

“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-old, were on the ‘a(chǎn)fter’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”

63. The underlined word gulf in Para. 3 most probably means _______.

A. interest      B. distance      C. difference   D. separation

A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.

C. Parents and children talk more about sex and drugs.

D. Parents share more interests with their children.

65. The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _____.

A. more confusion among parents

B. new equality between parents and children

C. less respect for parents from children

D. more strictness and authority on the part of parents

66. The purpose of the passage is to _____.

A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with

B. discuss the development of the parent-child relationship

C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship

D. compare today’s parent-child relationship with that in the past

We gather a great amount of incidental knowledge from pets(寵物). If we look after them properly, we learn what they like and dislike. We do not set out to gain this knowledge purposely, but in attending to our pets we gain it by the way. It is got without our realizing it.

In keeping our dogs or cats we learn about different diseases(疾病) that can affect them, and the cures for these diseases. We learn how much sleep they need and what kind of food keeps them healthy. In looking after our fish we learn about the composition of water. We get to know what kinds of fish can live peacefully together and what kinds are hostile to each other. We learn that animals, fish and birds have a lot of things in common with human beings.

If children keep pets, their general education is helped by this kind of incidental knowledge. One little incident after another in which their pets are involved adds to their store of learning. It is a more interesting form of learning than that given in the biology lesson in school. People who keep pets should have a sense of responsibility towards them. Children, too, should be taught to be responsible. Pets are completely dependent(依靠) on their owners and the owners should respond to this dependence by looking after them. Irresponsible behavior towards pets is a form of cruelty.

In deciding to keep a pet , we make ourselves responsible(有責(zé)任的)for providing proper food and shelter for the pet. In a crowded city like Hong Kong, where there is so little room for the exercise required by large pets, we should think twice before undertaking the responsibility of keeping one.

72.In keeping pets, we learn that ___________.

A. pets dislike human beings           B. pets share what we have

C. human beings can gain knowledge by keeping pets

D. pets and human beings gather a great amount of incidental knowledge

73.For children ___________ .

A. keeping pets widens(拓寬) their general knowledge

B. keeping pets adds to their trouble

C. all kinds of knowledge are gained by keeping pets

D. incidental knowledge is more important than general knowledge

74.In keeping pets, responsibility means ___________.

A. depending on them                                B. taking care of them

C. feeding them                                        D. teaching them

75.In Hong Kong, it is not proper to keep large pets because ___________.

A. they eat a lot while the owner provides little

B. they depend too much on people

C. there is little room for them to move aroundD. the responsibility is too great

A religious person will have a different thought than one who is not. And a Democrat usually doesn’t view issues the same way as a Republican.

Take the shoes for example. It has the same principle. Some like custom shoes for personalization. But some don’t. Some will purchase a shoes printer only for one desired image. That all depends on different conceptions. So when you have a negative thought about yourself, don’t consider it a fact until you also reflect on the opposite view. And if the alternative is more positive, accept that to be your truth.

An anorexic (厭食癥患者) looks in the mirror and thinks she is fat. As a result she starves herself and begins to get weak. But society thinks she’s too skinny. Unless she can change her perception, she’ll never agree with society. And she’ll never get better. What are you seeing in you that is preventing you from realizing how beautiful you are? Or how smart you are? Or how lovable? If you take the positive view, that is how other people will see you too.

More often than not the critical statements that damage your self-respect come from your own mind. Now you know how you can silence them. A bad comment is usually not about you, it’s about something that is going on with the commenter. Don’t believe anything that is said to you that isn’t in your best interest. And don’t waste any time or brainpower on anyone who doesn’t think you are amazing.

It’s what you think that creates how you feel. Design your own custom shoes, despite others’ critical eyes. If you like it, it will be the top one. If someone tells you you’re fat, or stupid or otherwise unappealing, the only person you should think badly about is them!

59. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Try to be different.               B. Different belief makes different view.

C. You are actually amazing.         D. Trust what people say to you.

60. Which of the following sentence contains a metaphor (暗喻)?

A. A Democrat usually doesn’t view issues the same way as a Republican

B. Some one likes custom shoes for personalization.

C. An anorexic looks in the mirror and thinks she is fat.

D. Design your own custom shoes, despite others’ critical eyes.

61. The reason why the writer wrote this passage is to ______.

A. confuse people as how to think

B. help people learn how to do self-reflection

C. tell people of different ways of thinking

D. show he is smarter than most of the people
