Except for the Sun, the Moon appears to be the biggest object in the sky. Actually it is one of the smallest, and only looks big because it is so near to us. Its diameter(直徑) is only 2,160 miles, or a little more than a quarter of the diameter of the Earth.

Once a month, or more exactly, once every 29.5 days, at the time we call"full moon", its whole surface looks bright. At other times, only part of it appears bright, and we always find that this is the part which faces towards the Sun, while the part facing away from the Sun appears dark. People could make their photographs better if they kept this in mind-only those parts of the Moon which are lit up by the Sun are brighter. This shows that the Moon gives no light of its own. It only throws back the light of the Sun, like a huge mirror hung in the sky.

Yet the dark part of the Moon's surface is not completely black; usually it is just light enough for us to be able to see its shape, so that we speak of seeing "the old Moon in the new Moon's arms". The light by which we see the old Moon does not come from the Sun, but from the Earth. We know well how the surface of the sea or of snow, or even of a wet road, may throw back uncomfortably much of the Sun's light on to our faces. In the same way the surface of the whole Earth throws back enough of the Sun's light on to the face of the Moon for us to be able to see the parts of it which would otherwise be dark.

6. How often do we see the Moon as its brightest?

A. Once every week.

B. Once every year.

C. Once every 29.5 days.

D. Once every 27 days.

7. What is meant by seeing " the old Moon in the new Moon's arms"?

A. We can see the dark parts of the Moon, though not clearly.

B. The new Moon is at its brightest.

C. The dark parts of the Moon are bright enough for us to see.

D. Part of the Moon's surface is lit by the Sun.

8. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The Moon gives no light of its own.

B. The Moon's diameter is exactly one fourth of that of the Earth.

C. The light by which we see the old Moon comes from the Sun.

D. The part of the Moon which is not lit by the Sun is completely black.

When Chinese scientists unearthed more than 1,000 bamboo slips (竹簡) in a 2,000-year-old tomb in Hubei Province earlier this year, they were more worried than happy. How could they stop these priceless ancient works from being damaged by the light? As soon as the slips dried out, they would break and the words written on them would be lost forever.

Scientists have had similar problems dealing with some of China's greatest discoveries. The Terracotta Warriors and Horses (兵馬俑) of the Qin Dynasty, for example, lost their bright colors when they dried out after coming into contact with the air. Fortunately, Chinese experts are now using modern techniques to preserve cultural relics (保護文物). They have started covering the warriors with a very thin layer of chemical paint to protect them. This paint absorbs sunlight and keeps out bacteria (細菌), so the colors don't fade.

As the bamboo slips found in Hubei were waterlogged (浸水的), another technique is used. Scientists take out the water and replace it with alcohol (酒精) and special chemicals before letting the wood dry. However, not all solutions are modern ones. In some cases, scientists have turned to history for an answer.

3. The underlined word "contact" in paragraph 2 means ________.

A. 關(guān)系 B. 接觸 C. 消失 D. 功能

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. They dried out the warriors not to lose their bright colors.

B. They protected the warriors by means of a chemical paint.

C. They preserved the bamboo slips using alcohol after being dried.

D. They are using old techniques to preserve warriors and slips.

5. The purpose of writing this passage is ________.

A. to discover more and more Chinese ancient relics in Hubei Province

B. to stop these priceless ancient works from being stolen by thieves

C. to care for Chinese ancient relics so they are not damaged by the light

D. to prevent 2,000-year-old tombs and slips from being unearthed

A huge tunnel was discovered under construction outside Bogota's La Picota prison; it is believed it was part of an escape plan for prisoned billionaire cocaine(可卡因) merchants.

"This is the most sophisticated(復(fù)雜的) tunnel ever built in the history of Colombia's prison system," a police statement said. It referred to it as a wonder of modern engineering.

The tunnel had a good air supply and was reinforced(加固) with wood paneling(鑲板) to prevent a collapse(倒塌). It was nearly 200 meters long and high enough for an average adult to walk through with a slight stoop(彎腰), police said.

Running nearly 15 meters below ground, the tunnel ended suddenly just 130 meters short of the prison walls, added police. Twenty-two workers were

arrested after police stormed the wood yard overlooking La Picota, where the tunnel began.

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us.

If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants.

Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit.

Most non-flowering plants don’t grow from seeds. They grow from spores. Spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as the seeds. When these spores fall on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.
