When did you last see a polar bear(北極熊)? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole Polar Bear Club. These"Polar Bears"are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island , New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body's temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循環(huán)系統(tǒng)) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, "When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away."

A person, like a commodity(商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration(夸張), however, does no harm when it shows the person's unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment(裝飾), so that the person to be packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.
A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self-satisfied stage of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow-capped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with the natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony(和諧)with nature for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elder's company is like reading a thick book of deluxe ( better quality) edition that attracts one so much as to be unwilling to part with.
As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

Japanese officials are struggling to prevent the spread of mad cow disease. Japan's first case of mad cow disease was reported in September. The Agriculture Ministry confirmed last month that a second cow was infected. Japan is the only country in Asia where mad cow disease is known to have spread. The disease is officially known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalities, or BSE. It causes holes in the brain. Cows act strangely before they die. So it is called mad cow disease.
Scientists believe cows get the disease by eating meat and bone meal from infected animals. Since September, Japan has banned imports and use of feed(飼料) made from animal remains. Recently, the Agriculture Ministry announced plans to destroy about five thousand cows that may have been given the feed.
Sales of Japanese beef products have dropped sharply in the past three months. Since October, Japanese officials have tested all cows that are killed for their meat. Some scientists question the testing. They say the disease often cannot be identified in young animals.
Scientists believe it's terrible to eat infected meat that may cause a similar brain disease. It cannot be cured.
About one hundred people in Europe have died from the disease in recent years. Most of them have been in Britain.
Until recently, some experts have estimated that the total number of deaths from eating infected beef could be as high as one-hundred thirty thousand. However, two new reports say there will be fewer deaths than earlier estimated. Science magazine reported the findings.
The reports say the total number of deaths from the disease may be as low as two hundred.
Researchers from France used a computer program to make their estimate. They say their study is based partly on a better understanding of the disease. They also say evidences show that young people are more likely to become infected. In Britain, the average age of those who died is twenty-eight. Only a few victims were older than fifty. From this evidence, the team says the probability of a person becoming infected decreases with age.
8. According to the report, how many cases of mad cow disease were reported in Japan?
A. One. B. Two. C. Many. D. Didn't mention.
9. If a person were infected in Japan, he would likely eat________.
A. cow which had eaten meat and bone meal
B. cow which had eaten imported feed made from animal remains
C. young cow which had eaten meat and bone meal
D. young cow which had eaten imported feed made from animal remains
10. From the text, we know that________.
A. a British person of 30 is more likely to be infected
B. a British person of 40 is more likely to be infected
C. a Japanese person of 30 is more likely to be infected
D. a Japanese person of 40 is more likely to be infected

Geologists have been studying volcanoes(火山)for a long time. Though they have learned a great deal, they still have not discovered the causes of volcanic action. They know that the inside of the earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat is caused by the great pressure of the earth's outer layers. Or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed. During the last sixty years scientists have learned about radium, uranium, thorium, and other radioactive elements. These give out heat all the time as they change into other elements. Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive elements.
Whatever the cause of the heat might be, we do know that the earth gets hotter the farther down we dig. In deep mines and oil wells the temperature rises about 1 degree F for each 50 feet. At this rate the temperature 40 miles below the earth's surface would be over 4,000 degrees F. This is much hotter than necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the rock above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic. In other words, the rock yields(屈服)slowly to pressure but is not liquid. But if some change in the earth's outer layer releases the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface.
4. The subject of this passage is the________.
A. formation of volcanoes
B. results of volcanic action
C. heart of the earth
D. causes of the earth's inside heat
5. The cause for the heat in the interior of the earth is probably________.
A. radioactive elements
B. the great pressure of the earth
C. not determined
D. the heat remaining from the formation of the earth
6. If the temperature at the earth's surface is 20°F, the temperature in a coal mine 500 feet below the surface would, in degree, be________.
A. 40 B. 30 C. 50 D. 120
7. Why doesn't the rock deep in the earth melt as a liquid at such high temperature?
A. Because the temperature isn't high enough to melt it.
B. Because it may be plastic.
C. Because the pressure of the rock above is strong enough to stop it melting.
D. Because there isn't oxygen inside the earth.

Cellphones have long been more than just telephones. They can take and send photographs, play music, even use a dog's bark as a ring tone.
The design of cellphones, though, has always been the domain of technology freaks(不正常的現(xiàn)象). Now, cellphone manufacturers have began to think of them as lifestyle accessories to be shown off in cafes and clubs.
Nokia, for instance, has just launched an up-market brand, "Vertu", which, in price and materials used, can be compared with an expensive watch.
Siemens too is expected to try and tap the new market for fashionable phones. Known for its high technical quality, the company is starting to focus more on trendy design.
Alexander Krug, a journalist for the German telecommunications magazine Connect, says, "This was why Siemens came up with its 'Xelibri' brand. They are basically telephones, but really they are fashion accessories."
Siemens launched four such models in Germany this April, simply called "1","2","3" and "4", which cost US$400. One looks a bit like a cellphone, but the others look like a UFO, a designer remote control device and a watch.
Motorola is also bringing out designs that depart from the norm. Since 2002 it has been marketing the "V70" with a round display and a rotating(旋轉(zhuǎn)的) opening mechanism.
Design is the priority for these lifestyle cellphones. Technical functions come second. A Motorola spokeswoman says that the "V70" comes equipped with "only basics". While Siemens admits that, for their "Xelibri" range, "We have not concentrated on particular technologies."
The target group for such phones is those who already own a cellphone and might want a second.
They are for people who go to a club and want a trendy little apparatus(裝置) to show off, it says.
As lifestyle cellphones are not aimed at the mass market, experts cannot agree if they have a great future or not. Krug says that while most can be afforded by people with a good job, Nokia's "Vertu" is in a different class:"That is only for people who wear a US$10,000 watch."
1. Why do the cellphone makers begin to develop new models?
A. To keep up with high technology.
B. To be shown off by some wealthy people.
C. To dominate the mass market.
D. To show their high technical quality.
2. What does the underlined word "trendy" in paragraph 4 mean? It means________.
A. latest B. valuable
C. fashionable D. popular
3. Which is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Most people think of cellphones not only as means of communication.
B. Cellphones can be used as expensive watches.
C. Nokia, Siemens and Motorola are all powerful cellphone makers.
D. All the cell users like to wear the new model cells in public places.
