In October 1949 the United Nations brought a number of specialists on food on Geneva, to discuss the problems of eating habits and food supplies of people throughout the world. One problem that interested the specialists particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known among the children in Africa.
Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor(惡性營養(yǎng)不良).
The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen(腫脹的) by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes colour and may break out in open sores(傷口). The hair changes colour and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced.
The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breast-feeding, gave them foods full of starches(淀粉) instead of greatly needed proteins(蛋白質(zhì)). They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives.
It was necessary that the children of Africa be helped to eat better. The doctors suggested that the production of foods rich in protein be increased; they thought that more fish should be caught and more nuts should be grown. That urged education plans to teach mothers better ways of feeding children. They suggested that the United Nations should send large quantities of powdered milk to hospitals and child-health centres. Finally, they suggested closer study of all the special problems connected with kwashiorkor.
71. Kwashiorkor is a disease which is caused by _______ .
A. poor living conditions
B. another unknown disease
C. having no food
D. not having enough protein
72. One difficulty in discovering kwashiorkor is that _______ .
A. people know nothing about it
B. it is like other diseases
C. it is hard to see signs of it
D. it does not last long
73. A main sign of the disease is that children who have it _______ .
A. cannot sit still
B. cannot walk
C. have a large stomach
D. are always hungry
74. A good way to cure the disease is by _______ .
A. eating better B. eating more starches
C. eating fruits D. drinking pure water
75. The United Nations can help to put an end to kwashiorkor by sending _______.
A. drugs
B. food with high protein content
C. medical teams
D. clean food

Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. The great athlete practices until he can play quickly, accurately, without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and decoding the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about decoding the words, so he can pay more attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as in the first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found automatic readers in the first grade who were reading almost three times as fast as the other children and scoring twice as high on comprehension tests. At fifth grade, the automatic readers were reading twice as fast as the others, and still outscoring them on accuracy, comprehension and vocabulary.
“It’s not IQ but the amount of time a child spends reading that is the key to automaticity. ”According to Rossman, any child who spends at least 3. 5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will in all likelihood reach the average child who spends 25 hours a week watching television. It can happen by just turning off the set just one night reading books.
You can test your child by giving him a paragraph or two to read aloud—something unfamiliar but appropriate to his age. If he reads aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, he probably is an automatic reader. If he reads haltingly(不順暢,結(jié)巴), one word at a time, without expression or meaning, he need more practice.
67. The underlined word “automaticity” probably means _______ .
A. being done without thinking
B. being done quickly
C. being done accurately
D. being done perfectly
68. How can the children learn to read?
A. They just read word by word.
B. They just read the words out.
C. They read by sounding out the letters and decoding the words.
D. They read by practicing more.
69. How many hours should a child spend in reading books every day?
A. 0. 5~0. 6. B. 3. 5~4.
C. 2. 5. D. 3. 6.
70. Which of the following is an automatic reader?
A. A child reads a book with stops.
B. A child reads one word at a time.
C. A child reads without expression or meaning.
D. A child reads with expression and meaning of the sentences.

It is a well-known fact that those who suffer from stress at work are often unskilled workers doing uninteresting, repetitive jobs, especially those on production lines. Many of them have already turned to medicines to fight against sleeplessness and fear about the future, two of the signs of long-term stress and depression. In Britain, people spend 650 million pounds a year on different kinds of medicines. About one third of this is spent on those medicines dealing with stress and depression. People take three million sleeping tablets every night. Although these “drugs of the mind” can be extremely useful in cases of crisis, most patients would be better off without them.
There are many causes of stress: uninteresting work, unemployment, poor housing, family problems, overcrowding and financial worry are all important factors. Nevertheless, doctors believe that if people learnt to breathe properly, took more exercise, used their leisure time more actively and expressed their anger instead of holding it in, they would not depend so much on drugs, which treat only the outward signs and not the cause of the stress. If doctors refused prescriptions more often and discouraged patients with minor illnesses from visiting the doctors, the country would have more money to spend on improving leisure facilities and adult education, which are at present inadequate in many parts of the country. Moreover, doctors would have more time to spend on those patients in real need of their help.
63. The passage tells us that _______ .
A. unskilled workers are more likely to suffer from stress
B. about one-third of the British workers worry about the future
C. most patients feel uncomfortable with medicines
D. people spend 650 million pounds on sleeping tablets every year
64. The word “depression” (Paragraph 1) means _______ .
A. humor B. low spirit
C. good effort D. balance
65. According to the writer’s opinion, _______ .
A. some medicines have a long-term effect on the mind
B. the ways to treat the cause of stress remain unknown
C. those who suffer from stress need to have a good rest
D. taking medicines is not a good way to overcome stress
66. In this passage, the writer states that _______ .
A. patients should visit their doctors whenever they feel unwell
B. the government should spend more money on people’s health
C. nowadays people spend too much time on their leisure activities
D. doctors offered patients medicines more often than necessary

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery(烹飪術(shù)) and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
59. Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph?
A. The importance of doing well at school.
B. Using school performance to help to choose a career.
C. The importance of being good at all subjects.
D. The indirect value of school work.
60. The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is probably _______ .
A. a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B. useful for his future work
C. a good way to master what are learned in books
D. a good way to find out his weak points
61. According to the passage, if a student’s school record is not good, he _______ .
A. will be a complete failure in his future work
B. will not be able to find a suitable job
C. will regret not having worked harder at school
D. may still do well in his future work
62. The whole passage centers on _______ .
A. choosing a career according to what one is skilled in
B. acquiring knowledge by working hard at school
C. finding one’s strong and weak points
D. developing one’s abilities useful in school work
