People in the past made clay-pottery because they needed it for their lives. They used the pots they made for cooking, storing food, and carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to the early culture that scientists now study it to leam more about ancient civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of pictures, materials and making, the more advanced the culture itself.

The artisan who makes pottery in North America today use his or her skill and imagination to create items that are beautiful as well as useful, turning something ordinary into something special. The potter uses one of the Earth's most basic materials, clay. Clay can be found almost anywhere. Good pottery clay must be free from all small stones and other hard materials that would make the potting steps

difficult. Most North American artisan potters now buy ready-made clay in stores, but some find the clay they need right in the earth, close to where they work.

The most important tools potters use are their own hands; however, they also use wooden modeling tools, plain wire, and sponges. Plain wire is used to cut away the finished pot from its vase on the potter's wheel.

After a finished pot is dried of all its wet part in the open air, it is placed in a kiln and fired. The first firing hardens the pottery, arid it is then ready to be glazed and fired again.

For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later bum off in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the clay surface, making any kind ofdesigns that they want.

I don't know how it is that when I go to a post office I always seem to find myself in a line behind someone who has some long and complicated business to do. Having only come in to buy a couple of stamps, I am obliged to wait patiently while an old lady takes ten minutes to complete a form that a child could do in one. People in other lines move quickly forward to take their turns and are served by cheerful clerks. Sometimes, feeling that I cannot bear waiting in my motionless line any longer, I decide to join another one. It may be longer, but at least it is moving. This always turns out to be the worst thing I could have done. Not only have I now lost my place in the first line but the one I am in now slows to a stop. An angry argument suddenly develops between the clerk and the customer at the counter, or information is asked for which results in the clerk having to ask a senior official or, if it's a particularly difficult problem, disappear into a back room. Why it takes him so long, I don't know. Perhaps he has a quick snack, but, no, that can't be right because when at last my turn comes, he pushes forward a printed sign, saying "Position Closed" and without a smile says, "Sorry, going to lunch"

When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn't understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laughs turned into crying.

So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing are controlled by the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so does crying.

Whatever helps us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.

Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.

Just as crying can be healthy, not crying---holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering---can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can 1ead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illness. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural, healthy and emotional response.

26. Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died?

        A.   Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.

        B.   Because she did not love her grandmother.

        C.  Because she was too shy to cry at that time.

        D.  The author doesn't give the explanation.

 27. It can be inferred from the text that                       .

       A.   there are two ways to keep healthy

       B.   emotional health has a close relationship to physical health

       C.   crying and laughing play the same roles

       D.   crying does more good to health than laughing

28. According to the author, which ofthe following statements is true?

        A.    Crying is the best way to get help from others.

        B.    Fighting back tears may cause some health problems.

        C.   We will never know our deep feelings unless we cry.

        D.    We must cry if we want to reduce pressure

29. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

        A.   Why We Cry                 B. How to Keep Healthy

        C.   Power ofTears              D. New Scientific Discovery

30. What is the author's attitude to "crying"?

       A. Positive.   B.Negative.    C.Touched.    D.Upset.
