When The Grapes of Wrath (憤怒) was published on March 14, 1939, it created a national sensation (轟動(dòng)) for its description of the destructive effects of the Great Depression (大蕭條) of the 1930s. By the end of April, it was selling 2,500 copies a day — a remarkable number considering the hard economic times. In May, the novel was a number-one best-seller, selling at a rate of 10,000 copies a week. By the end of 1939, close to a half million copies had been sold.

John Steinbeck was shocked by the tremendous response to his novel. Almost overnight, he found himself involved in a great national debate over the migrant labor problem. Many people were shocked by the poverty and hopelessness of the story, and others denied that such circumstances could happen in America. Even people who had never read a book before bought a copy of The Grapes of Wrath. At $2.75 per copy, it was affordable and quickly sold out.

However it was banned and burned in Buffalo, New York; East Saint Louis, Illinois; and Kern County, California, where much of the novel is set. In fact, the novel remains one of the most frequently banned books in the United States. The book was criticized sharply in Congress by Representative Lyle Boren of Oklahoma, who called the novel’s description of migrant living conditions a lie. Charges were made that “obscenity” (淫穢) had been included in the book in large part to sell more copies. Eventually, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to praise the book and defend Steinbeck against his critics. In 1940, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.

The popularity of the novel has endured. It is estimated that it has sold fifteen million copies since its publication. For almost sixty years, Steinbeck’s novel has been a classic in American literature; it has been translated into several languages, including French, German, and Japanese. The Grapes of Wrath has also been a necessary part of the school curriculum in America since the end of World War II.

Throughout the world, clothing has many uses. It is used to provide protection from the elements. It also is worn to prevent others from seeing specific parts of one’s body. However, the parts of the body that must be covered vary widely throughout the world. Some clothing is worn to provide supernatural protection. Wearing a lucky shirt to take an exam is calling for supernatural assistance.

People in all cultures use clothing and other forms of bodily decoration to communicate status, intentions and other messages. In North America, we dress differently for business and various leisure activities. North American women usually are much more knowledgeable of and concerned with little difference in messages communicated by clothes than men. At times, this leads to silly mistakes of interpretation of female intentions on the part of men. Of course, clothing styles also are intended to communicate messages to members of the same gender(性別).

Long before we are near enough to talk to someone, their appearance tells their gender, age, economic class, and often even intentions. We begin to recognize the important cultural clues at an early age. The vocabulary of dress that we learn includes not only items of clothing but also hairstyles, jewelry, and other body decoration. In most cultures, however, the same style of dress communicates different messages depending on the age, gender, and physical appearance of the individual wearing it.

Putting on certain types of clothing can change your behavior and the behavior of others towards you. This can be the case with a doctor’s white lab coat, or an army uniform. Most uniforms are clearly symbolic so that they can rapidly and unmistakably communicate status. For instance, the strange hairstyle and clothing of the English “punks” are essential aspects of their uniforms.

There are many forms of body decoration other than clothes that are used around the world to send messages. These include body and hair paint, and even body deformation. When doctors put braces on teeth, they are actually doing the same thing – deforming or reforming a part of the body to make it more attractive.

Attractive fathers do not pass their looks on to their sons but they will hand their good looks down to their daughters, research shows.

In a study of family photographs, psychologists Professor David Perrett and Elisabeth Cornwell at the University of Colorado have found that while both father and mother can influence the attractiveness of their daughters, the couple's good looks do not necessarily contribute to the attractiveness of their son as an adult.

Handsome men with masculine (男子氣概的) looks are likely to pass on masculine features, but not facial attractiveness. The theory suggests it is not unusual for attractive parents to produce a beautiful daughter while failing to pass on the same good looks to a son. While many celebrity mothers produce stunning (極為出色的) daughters — such as Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate Hudson or Jerry Hall and her daughter Georgia — the same is not necessarily true of celebrity fathers. Sean Stewart, the son of Rod Stewart and his first wife Alana, would probably be judged less attractive than his model sister Kimberly.

“We can’t see a strong relationship between the parents’ attractiveness and the sons. If the parents are supermodels, the chances are the daughters will be lookers,” Perrett said. Prof Perrett said it has previously been suggested that a woman could increase her own reproductive success by choosing a “sexy” mate whose genes would be passed on to male descendants (后代).

But a new study, published in the current edition of the journal Animal Behaviour, disagrees with the theory. The researchers said: “When we looked at women’s faces, we found clear evidence that attractiveness passed from both father and mother to daughter. For the male line, we find that facial masculinity matched the rule ‘like father, like son’. But we did not find any evidence that facial attractiveness is passed from father to son.”

31. According to Paragraph 2, Professor Perrett believes that         .

     A.   only attractive fathers can have beautiful daughters

     B.   neither Kate Hudson nor Georgia is beautiful

     C.   Sean Stewart is as attractive as his father

     D.   Kimberly is more attractive than Sean Stewart

33. The underlined word "lookers" in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by “        ”.

     A.   successful people                            B.   beautiful people

     C.   famous people                               D.   lucky people

34. Which of the following statements can be drawn from the last paragraph?

We’ve all heard of the popular saying, the grass is always greener on the other side, and this saying couldn’t be truer when we are considering places to live. Many who live in rural areas miles away from city conveniences sometimes long for amenities (優(yōu)雅舒適) they don’t have easy access to, and those who deal with the hustle and bustle (忙忙碌碌) of city life long for the peace and quiet of country life.

Is the grass really greener on the other side, or do people only look at the positive aspects of living elsewhere? It’s difficult to make that decision when you’ve never experienced life on the other side, but I’ve lived in the city and in the country, and although a perfect place on this planet doesn’t exist, I now appreciate city life more than ever before.

I lived in a city as a child. It wasn’t as busy as Chicago, but all of the conveniences of city life were within easy reach, and when visiting my cousin who lived in the country, I was very envious. It was fun to play in the pinewoods, the property was vast, the air was fresh, and country life was something I longed for. The grass literally was greener on the other side. At that time I vowed to live in the country when I grew up so that I would eventually get a good dose of what it was like to live in the country, away from amenities of city life and luxuries I had taken for granted as child. This was the dream of a child, but not of an adult with responsibilities and realistic prospects.

A.   whatever you have in your life, what someone else has always looks better

B.   many people are not used to the belongings he owns

C.   many people tend to make an objective judgment of their future life

D.    many people are longing for a better life or a better job

28.   The main idea of the last paragraph is         .

A.   why I hated living in a city as a child

B.   how I longed for country life as a child

C.   that a responsible man should not live in the country

D.   that it is convenient to live in a city

29.   What may the writer talk about mostly in the paragraphs following the last?

A.   The advantages of country life.                        B.   The disadvantages of country life.

C.   The advantages of city life.                           D.   The disadvantages of city life.

30.   What is the author’s real attitude toward living in a city?

A.   Critical.             B.   Negative.            C.   Uninterested.      D. Positive.
