Think about how many ways there are for you to communicate today. You can send a letter or pick up the phone and make a call. But today, one of the most popular ways to communicate is called instant messaging. In any instant messaging system, you type a little text message on your computer, press the “Send” button, and your message INSTANTLY shows up on your friend’s screen. But how does it work?
Actually, the whole process is very cool. In the 1980s, you could sit down at a computer at any big university. Up to 100 people would be logged in and sharing the computer. They had to share because these computers were very expensive. You could type a command to send an instant message to anyone logged into the same computer. It felt like everyone was connected together no matter where they were sitting.
Today, you can do the same thing — but with lots more possibilities. And you can communicate with just about anyone in the world. All you need is an instant messaging program installed(安裝) on your computer. There are many programs to choose from. AOL's instant messenger (AIM) is probably the most popular right now. MSN has one. Google has Google Talk. Ask your friends and find out what they are using. That will make it easier to communicate with them.
When you are ready, you create an account. Next, you need to figure out the IM names your friends use. Add their IM names to your IM program. Click on the friend you want to talk to and then type away. When you click end, your friend gets the message instantly.
But behind the scenes(在后臺(tái),在幕后), amazing things are happening. Your IM program is communicating with a computer, called a server. The server could be just down the road or even in some other city. All your friend's computers are communicating with a server, too. Your computer is constantly chatting with the server to make everything happen. The network called the Internet makes it all possible.

“It’s over! Thank goodness!”
School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus. Janie, the driver, tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by striking the match of talks. I try to listen politely, but usually I am too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.
“My father’s ill,” she said to no one in particular. I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile. With a sudden change of interest, I asked, “What’s wrong with him?”
With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, “Heart trouble.” Her eyes lowered as she continued, “I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him.” I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.
I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.
Suddenly I realized Janie was more than a bus driver. That was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares for them too.
I suddenly felt very selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant. I shouldn’t have been so selfish and self-centered.

Are your children liked by their teachers? All parents want their children to impress their teachers and succeed in school. You can get your children to impress their teachers by following these easy steps.
Make sure they’re prepared. Teachers are impressed by children coming to school prepared to learn. Make sure they have everything they need—pencils textbooks, erasers and so on.
Require them to be active in class. Teach them to ask teachers questions when they don’t understand something. Some children think teachers are bothered by questions, but most teachers are impressed when children take the initiative(采取主動(dòng)) in asking questions. They should take part in class discussions, giving their opinions politely.
Keep your children healthy. If your children are tired and hungry, they won’t be ready to learn. Children need at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night. Feed your children a solid breakfast and prepare a healthy lunch. Provide them with fruit and other healthy foods—apples or bananas are better for them than cookies.
Make sure that your children do their homework. If they really don’t understand it, discuss it with them patiently. Don’t help them do their homework. Teachers can always tell who it is that does the work.
Teach your children good manners and habits. Children need to arrive at the school punctually, and be polite to their teachers and classmates. Parents need to teach these skills at home. Nothing is sweeter than children who say “please” and “thank you”, and these are children their teachers are certain to love.
