A man found the cocoon ( 繭 ) of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to get out of the cocoon. Then it seemed to stop . It appeared to have gotten as far as it could, and to be able to go no further.
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and cut off the remainder of the cocoon. The butterfly then got out easily. But it then had a weak body and small, shriveled ( 皺縮 ) wings.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he’d expected that, at any moment, the wings would grow, and it would fly off.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling ( 爬行 ) around weak and small. It was never able to fly .What a shame!
What the man, in his kindness and fast action, hadn't understood was the struggle required for the butterfly .The butterfly needed to get through the small opening itself ,so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If nature allowed us to go through our lives without any difficulties, it would weaken our abilities. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.
Fill in the blanks with the proper words or phrases.
The man | The butterfly |
found a cocoon and watched it | struggled to get out of 71 |
72 the remainder | got out easily, with a weak body and small wings |
continued to watch | crawled and was never able to 73 |
It’s through __74__ that a man can become __75__. |

Text messaging(發(fā)信息)was designed for quick exchange of information. For messages that need short words, the short messaging systems are preferred. In a public place, for example, it is better for people to send text messages than to talk loudly and disturb others with their conversation. It has its advantages, but sadly, there are also disadvantages.
There have been several celebrities (名人)and TV shows raising the problem about accidents caused by sending or reading text messages while driving. It causes drivers to lose control or lose their concentration while driving.
Text messaging may actually be more dangerous than talking while driving as it requires the driver to take his eyes off the road and onto the phone. It is a most dangerous thing to do while driving.
The other disadvantage is the poor spelling habit that it develops among young people. It is natural for them to want to make a shorter form of the words so as to get it done quickly. However, they carry this through even when writing formal documents (文件). Young people are becoming poor at spelling even simple words.
Text messaging also brings about an impersonal(冷淡的) culture. People communicate with text messaging. And they say important things on their phone when they should actually be said in person.
Culture changes along with its people and that is something that everyone knows will happen. What is sad is what it is turning into. Although many will argue that this kind of change is just like any other change that happened in the past, radical (激進(jìn)的)in the beginning, common finally. Text messaging may be one of those but it is pretty hard to think about the time when the phone separates two people even when they are sitting side by side.
66. We can know from the first paragraph that ____.
A. text messaging is becoming less popular B. some people like listening to others' talk.
C. people would like to make a phone call in public D. many people prefer text messaging

A. they often write formal documents.
B. they often use a shorter form of the words to send messages.
C. They don't work hard at their lessons
D. they only remember how to spell difficult words
68. How many disadvantages does the text messaging have according to this passage?
A. Five B. Four C. Three D. Two
69. The author's attitude towards the use of text messaging is _____.
A .unconcerned(不關(guān)心) B. amazed C. supportive D. worried

B. introduce the development that text messaging brings
C. describe(描寫)the convenience(方便)that text messaging brings
D. compare the disadvantages and disadvantages of text messaging

Education is not an end , but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. our purpose is to fit them for life.
In many modern countries it has for some time been fashionable(流行的)to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid --- one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough: we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees(學(xué)位)they refuse to do what they think "low" work; and in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor: we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns…
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability, and secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be unwilling to do one's work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
61. In the writer’s opinion,_________
A. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
B. all the social problems can’t be solved by education
C. education can solve most of the world’s problems
D. free education won’t help to solve problems

A. a farmer is more important than a professor B. our society needs free education for all

A. build a perfect world B. let everyone receive education
C. choose officials for the country D. prepare children mainly for their future work
64. What is mainly discussed in the text?
A. The type of education B. The value of education
C. The means of education D. The system of education
65. What can we learn from the text?
A. Work with hands is thought to be shameful in some modern countries.
B. In all modern countries, free education has been fashionable.
C. A perfect nation can solve all the problems of society.
D. A professor is far more important than a farmer.
