Cotton farmers in some Indian villages are flooding to buy Coca-Cola and Pepsi, believing that the sugar in the fizzy(冒泡的) drinks kills pests . Farmers say scientists advised them to mix pesticides with a sugary syrup (糖漿) to control pests, and they found the mixture cheaper and more effective than pure chemicals---- although soft drink makers and scientists dismissed the claims.
N. Hamunayya, who has become famous in his village in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, said his crop survived an attack of pests which had resisted other solutions. "We found that all the colas had the same effect on pests. The pests became numb and fell to ground," he said.He said the drinks had all the elements they needed: they were cheaper, sticky, fizzy, and attracted ants, which swallowed the larvae( 幼蟲(chóng))of the pests.
But Thirupathi Reddy, assistant director of the Regional Agri Research station, Guntur, says tests had denied such claims. " We conducted some field trials on cotton crop at our research station. There were no increases of productivity or deaths of pests," he says. Statements from Pepsi and Coca-Cola said there was " no scientific basis" for this practice. But their sellers are enjoying booming sales. Mantan Wali, who sells soft drinks in 17 villages in the region, said sales increased , thanks to the farmers. " For the 10 days between August and September I had booming business. Instead of just 30 cases ( each containing a dozen one-litre bottles) of cola I started selling almost 200 cases, " he said. " We expected the sales to fall suddenly after the argument over pesticide remains in the cola drinks. Now I have to keep extra stock (存貨)for the cotton farmers, " he said.
68. N. Hamunayya has become famous because_______.
A. He is the first farmer to use cola to kill pests.
B. He is strongly against the use of cola to kill pests.
C. He successfully advised farmers to use cola to kill pests.
D. He himself successfully used cola to kill pests and saved his crop.
69. The underlined word in the passage most probably means_______.
A. fire B. agree C. misunderstand D. ignore
70. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. Ants play a role in killing the pests.
B. All the farmers in India are using soft drinks to kill pests.
C. It's the scientists who advised farmers to use soft drinks to kill pests.
D. Now the sellers of soft drinks can sell more than 300 cases in 10 days.

Almost everyone suffers from a headache occasionally. But some people suffer from repeated, frequent headaches.
What is headache? What causes it? What can be done about a headache? What research is being done on headaches?
The dictionary defines(定義) headache simply as “a pain in the head.” What most people mean by headache is a pain which lasts several minutes or hours. It covers the whole head, or one side of it, or perhaps the front or the back of the head. To add to the confusion about a definition, some people call tight feeling in the head a headache.
A headache is important because it can be the first warning of a serious condition which probably could be controlled if discovered early. If a person removes the warning, day after day, with a pain-killer, he may pass the point of easy control.
The professional name for covering up a symptom is “masking” (遮蔽,隱去). A headache specialist once said, “Masking symptoms is not the best way of treatment.” He compared taking a pain-killer for a headache before a cause is known with taking iron pills for anemia(貧血癥) while bleeding continues undiscovered. He added, “Sometimes it is wiser to stand still than to advance in darkness.
A headache is important also because it interferes(妨礙) needlessly with normal, happy living. The employee with a headache does less work. In a flash of temper he may upset his fellow workers or customers, causing a direct of indirect loss to his organization. The mother with a headache suffers and disturbs the family. She upsets her husband and children.

C. you’d better still stand there without moving when it is dark at night

66.What may the author talk about in the following paragraph?

C. symptom of headaches D. bad effects of a headache.
67. What’s the main idea of the passage?

"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened without that previous disappointment."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便車(chē))to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got turned down every time.
In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring an inexperienced person. "Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said.
So I returned to my hometown--Dixon, Illinois. While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired.
My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director named Peter MacArthur told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?"
I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he asked me to broadcast an imaginary game before a microphone.
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words. I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.
