It's strange that a man born on Labor Day has had to work so hard to succeed in life. Jacob seems like a normal person. He likes music, art and photography. His parents both got college degrees. He used to go to a beach house in Portland every summer. He is a big fan of Mexican food. Reading these facts about him may lead to the opinion that he had a great childhood. However, behind all of these is a past that would be terrible for many kids growing up.
It started when he was only two years old. His parents divorced and then remarried. Going through elementary school and middle school, he was frightened a lot. This may have led to the worst thing that could have happened to a young man.
He developed deep depression. Doing the smart thing, he talked to his parents about his problem. His parents decided that this issue was very serious and Jacob was admitted to West Hills Hospital. He stayed there for two weeks and had his depression diagnosed. Serious insomnia caused the problem.
The solution was daily medication. The medication took care of Jacob's depression problem. However, it contained a substance with lithium(鋰). The side effect he suffered from lithium was that he got spoonfuls of sugar and ate it with anything else that was on his plate. This led to a weight gain of 25 pounds while he was on medication. So he decided he had to lose some weight and stop the medication.
Now he has lost a big part of the weight and he has managed to solve his problem he had in high school. Now he is a happy human being.
Many people would have had a very hard time coming back from depression. Many people probably would have given up their dreams. But Jacob is not like this. He took what was a mess of his life and turned it around to become a great man and a person with a very bright future.

With all kinds of toothbrush and toothpaste ads everywhere, people have come to realize the importance of protecting teeth. "There is no decayed tooth(齲齒) for young children" has become the goal of all parents. Bad teeth may cause a lot of pain or even death. Infections of gums (牙齦) and teeth can release bacteria into the blood system. Those bacteria can increase the chances of a heart attack or stroke and worsen the effects of other disease.
Experts at the National Institutes of Health say good dental care starts at birth. They say breast milk is the best food for the healthy development of teeth. Breast milk can help slow bacterial growth and acid production in the mouth. But dentists say you should clean your baby's gums and early teeth after each feeding. Use a cloth with a little warm water.
When baby teeth begin to appear, you can clean them with a wet toothbrush. Dentists say it is important to find soft toothbrushes specially made for babies. And use them very gently. The use of fluoride (氟化物) to protect teeth is common in many parts of the world. This natural element is often added to drinking water supplies. The fluoride mixes with enamel (牙釉質(zhì)), the hard surface on teeth, to help prevent holes from forming.
But young children often swallow toothpaste when they brush. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry notes that swallowing fluoridated toothpaste can cause problems. So young children should be carefully supervised when they brush their teeth. And only a small amount of fluoridated toothpaste, the size of a green pea, should be used.
Parents often wonder about what effect thumb sucking or sucking on a pacifier (橡皮奶嘴) might have on their baby's teeth. Dental experts generally agree that this is fine early in life. The American Academy of Family Physicians says most kids stop sucking their thumbs by the age of four. If it continues, the group advises parents to talk to their child's dentist or doctor. It could interfere with the correct development of permanent teeth.
Dentists say babies should be examined when their first teeth appear --- usually at around six months. Healthy teeth are meant to last a lifetime. If parents pay attention to the above tips, young children’s teeth growing can be good and healthy.

Now and then I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. “Nothing in particular,” she replied. But for long I have been accustomed to such responses, and became convinced that the_seeing_see_little.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I — who cannot see, find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry(對稱) of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch(銀樺樹), or the rough bark of a pine. In spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, smooth texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable swirl(旋動); and something of the miracle of nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently in a small tree and feel the happiness of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have cool waters of a stream rush through my open fingers. To me a rich carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug(波斯毛毯). To me the circle of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips. At times my heart cries out with longing to see all these things. If I can get so much pleasure from mere touch, how much more beauty must be revealed by sight. Yet, those who have eyes apparently see little. The whole picture of color and action filling the world is taken for granted. It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light and the gift of sight is used only as mere convenience rather that as a means of adding fullness to life.
66. What does the author imply by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?

A. She was blind.
B. She was content with her situation now.
C. She thought the gift of sight a great pity.
D. She acquired information and knowledge only through touch.
68. Which of the following is NOT an example given to show how the nature interests the author?
A. The delicate symmetry (對稱) of a leaf.
B. The delightful, smooth texture of a flower.
C. The happiness of a bird in full song.
D. The most luxurious Persian rug.
69. What does the author think is the reason why sighted people fail to discover the beauty of nature?
A. That they long for that which they have not.
B. That what they have is usually taken for granted.
C. That the gift of sight is a means of adding fullness to life.
D. That mere touch is the best way to discover and feel.
70. What is the passage mainly about?
