meaningful today. His observations are also important because the timing of his visit, the 1830s,was before America was industrialized. This was the era of the small farmer, the small businessman, and the settling of the western frontier. It was the period of history when the traditional values of the new country were newly established. In just a generation, some 40 years since the adoption of the U.S:Constitution.the new form of government had—already produced a society of people with unique values. He was, however,a fair observer and saw both the good and bad sides of these qualities.
The first part of Democracy m America was written in 1831—32 and published in 1835.A highly positive and optimistic account of American government and society, the book was very well received. He attempted to get a glimpse of the core of American society.all the while promoting his own philosophy:the equaling of the classes and the unavoidable depth of aristocratic(貴族的)privilege The rest of the book he labored on for four years.and in 1840 the second part was published. This was substantially more pessimistic than the first, warning of the dangers despotism (暴政)and governmental centralization, and applying his ideas and criticisms more directly to France. As a result, it was not received as well as the first part, except in England where it was highly thought of.

I was shopping in the supermarket when I.heard a young voice boom from across the aisle.“Mom,come here! There’s this lady here my size!”
The mother rushed to a boy she called Mickey;then she turned to me to apologize.
I smiled and told her,“It’s okay.”Then I talked to the boy,“Hi,Mickey,I’m Darry
Kramer.How are you?”
He studied mc from head to toe,and asked,“Arc you a little mommy?”
“Yes.I have a son”I answered
“Why are you so little?”he asked.
…It s the way I was born.”I said.“Some people are little. Some are tall.I’m just not going to grow any bigger.”After about five more minutes of answering questions,I shook Mickey’s hand, and he returned to his mother.
My life as a little  person is filled with stories 1ike that.I enjoy talking to children and Explaining why I look different from their parents.it has taken many years to develop my confidence to be able to do that.
It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness.I stand three feet.nine inches tall I was born an achondroplasia dwarf(侏儒).Despite this,my parents encouraged me to do all the things the kids around me did when I was growing up When my neighbors got two-wheel bikes,I got a two-wheel bike When they roller-skated, I roller-skated.
I didn’t realize how short I was until I started school There,a few kids 1picked on me,calling me names. Then I knew. After that,I began to hate the first day of school cach year.I didn’t know who was new and would stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs.
As time went on,I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life.I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
What I lacked in height,I made up for in personality.
I’m 47 now,and the stares have not diminished as I’ve grown older.People 1ook in disbelief when they see me get out of my car off the driver’s side.During those times,I try to keep a good attitude When people are rude,I remind myself,“Look what else I have—a great family.Nice friends.”
And it’s the children’s questions that make my 1ife special. When I talk with children. They leave content that their questions have been answered My hope is that in taking time with them,I will encourage them to accept their peers whatever size and shape they come in,and treat them with respect.

Uncertainty spreads through our lives so thoroughly that it dominates our language,Our everyday speech is made up in large part of words like probably, many, soon, great, little. What do these words mean?
Such verbal imprecision is not necessarily to be criticized. Indeed, it has a value Just because it allows uw to express judgments when a precise quantitative statement is out of the question.
We have been trying to pin down by experiments what people meari by these expressions in specific contexts, and how the meanings change with age. For instance,a subject is told "There are many trees in the park" and is asked to say what number the word may mean to him. Or a child is invited to take "some" sweets from a bowl and we then count how many he has taken. We compare the number he takes when he is alone with the number when one or more other children are present and are to take some sweets after him, or with the number he takes when told to give“some" sweets to another child.
First, we find that the number depends, of course, on the items involved. To most people some friends means about five, while some trees means about twenty. However, unrelated areas sometimes show parallel values. For instance, the language of probability seems to mean about the same thing in predictions about the weather and about politics: the expression is certain to( rain,or be elected)signifies to the average person about a 70 percent chance; is likely to, about a 60 percent chance; probably will, about 55 percent.
Secondly, the size of the population of items influences the value assigned to an expression. Thus, if we tell a subject to take "a few" or“a lot of" glass balls from a box, he will take me if the box contains a large number of glass balls than if it has a small number, But not proportionately more: if we increase the number of glass balls eight times, the subject takes only half as large a percentage of the total.
Thirdly, there is a marked change with age. Among children between six and fourteen years old, the older the child, the fewer glass balls, he will take. But the difference between a lot and a few widens with age. This age effect is so consistent that it might be used as a test of intelligence.

  1. 1.

What's the right attitude towards the words like probably, any and soon ?

    1. A.
They are inaccurate and we should avoid them.
    2. B.
They are necessary since we cannot be always precise.
    3. C.
They should be criticized because there are too many of them.
    4. D.
Their value is not yet clear since we don't know their meaning.
  2. 2.

Why do we do experiments with the words many and some?

    1. A.
To prove that people are insensitive to these words.

To prove that the words dominate our everyday speech.
    3. C.
To find out how the meanings vary with age and contexts.

Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria (衡量標準)in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.
“The safety issue is a big one,” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer -----“That’s not a problem here,”-----Mahoney began to feel uneasy.
“No crime whatever?” comments Mahoney today. “I just don’t buy it.” Nor should he: in 1999 the U.S. Department of education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to college,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation.”
But getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges must report crime statistics(統計數字) by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity(關注), leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be serious,” warns S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group.
To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions

  1. 1.

It is often difficult to get correct information on campus crime because some colleges ____

    1. A.
      receive too many visitors
    2. B.
mirror the rest of the nation
    3. C.
hide the truth of campus crime
    4. D.

    2. B.
      admit
    3. C.
      believe
    4. D.
      expect
  3. 3.

    1. A.
that are protected by campus security
    2. B.
that report campus crimes by law
    3. C.
that are free from campus crime

Does a drink a day keep heart attacks away? Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease. Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory. More important, the work provided the first solid induction (歸納) of how alcohol works to protect the heart.
In the study, researchers from Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attack with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high density lipoproteins, the so-called good cholesterol, which is known to prevent heart disease.
As evidence has mounted, some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. The risks of teetotalling (絕對戒酒) are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, strokes and liver troubles—not to mention violent behaviour and traffic accidents. Moreover, some studies suggest that even  moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon cancer.
