Professor Martin’s report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an Unusually large number of such children are mentally affected.

The professor says,“It’s true,my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. But our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings.”

Captain Thomas James,an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and himself a father of two, said,“I’ve never heard of such rubbish.Taking me for example.no harm is done to the education of my children, who change schools regularly―if they keep to the same system,as in our Army schools. In my experience―and I’ve known quite a few of them―Army children are as well adjusted as any others,if not more so.What the professor doesn’t appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situation children will adapt much better than grown―ups."

When this reached Professor Martin,he said that at no time had his team suggested that all children were backward or mentally affected in some way,but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency.

“Our findings show that while the very bright children can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation”.

Language is a major problem for the European Union(EU).The agreement or treaty(條約)which created the organization that eventually became the EU,the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country’s language must be treated equally. The 0riginal six countries had only three languages between them:French,German and Dutch/Flemish.However,there are now 15 countries in the EU,with a total of 12 languages.EU documents must be translated into all these languages, and at official meetings, the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters.

All this translating is very expensive and time consuming(費時的).it is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EU’s administrative(管理方面的)costs are spent on this task.In the near future it is probably that several more countries, most 0f them having their own languages, will join the EU,thus making the situation even worse.

The problem is not just cost:there are practical difficulties as welI.With 12 languages, there are 132 possible“translation situations”that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can  translate from(for example)Danish into Greek,or Dutch into Portuguese,at a high professionaI standard.

In practice, the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some Engiish.However.a(chǎn)ny action to reduce the number of official languages(perhaps to four or five)would be a blow to the price of the smaller countries.Another commonly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany.

53.What’s the main purpose of this passage?

    A.To give a solution to a problem.

B.To find out a problem and show how severe it is

C.To criticize the European Union for inefficiencv(低效).

D.To show that the problem cannot be solved.

54.According to the writer, the use of English in contacts among EU officals has

A.a(chǎn)ngered the officials who don’t speak English

B.lessened the number of official languages

C.reduced the effect of the Problem

D.been supported by powerful member countries

55.The writer mentions“Danish into Greek”as an example of

A.a(chǎn) situation that might be difficult to deal with

    B.a(chǎn) situation that occurs often

C.one of the 12 situations that requires an interpreter

    D.languages easily being interpreted

56.The writer suggests that if the number of official languages was reduced,

A.the EU would not know which official languages to choose

B.countries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappy

C.only easy languages would be used officially

D.the smaller member countries would be pleased

“Wanted by the FBI.”To the murderer,or the bank robber, these are the most frightening words in the world. When the criminal hears them,he knows that six thousand trained persons are after him.

Edgar Hoover quietly went ahead with his plans. He picked his men carefully. They had to be between the ages of twenty--five and thirty  five.He wanted only men with good manners and good character. When working as his officers, they would have to meet all kinds of people.Hoover wanted men who could handle a teacup as well as a gun.But the FBI cannot help in every police problem. It can look into only certain crimes against the government.Solving all other crimes is the duty of local police forces.

One possible version:

Every year after the college entrance exam, the top-rated exam takers will attract wide attention from all over the country. They accept various interviews.take part in different social activities and receive quite a lot of prize money as well.

Some people say"yes"to this phenomenon. They think, for one thing,it can make more people care about education;for another, those top studends can and do set good examples to the rest of the students.

However, others hold opposite opinions about this, they believe that giving too

much attention to those top winners can do more harm than good to them. Meanwhile, high marks don’t necessarily mean strong ability.

In my opinion,it’s all right to give proper attention to those top winners, but weshouldn't pay too much attention to them. After all, exams and marks aren't everything.
