第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項A、B、C和D中,選出最佳選項。

A

The other day at the supermarket,I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed.A little smack(摑,打)on his bottom would have done the job,I thought.

Teenagers also cause discipline(紀(jì)律)problems. As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with him.So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said:“Why don't you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”

My palms were itching(發(fā)癢)to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not.The last I heard, she had run away from home again.

The list goes on and on.Could it be that today's parents are softer and believe that they must not rod(棍棒懲罰)their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree.I believe it is the parents' duty to discipline the children even at a young age.

My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary.Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined.Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged with child abuse(虐待).However,my daughter showed great respect for me when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.

56.According to the passage, the author would probably

A.beat the children every day    B.punish the children when necessary

B.The teenager's mother lived together with her daughter in the school then.

C.The author was charged with child abuse by her daughter's friends abroad.

D.The author's daughter was very thankful for her parent's strict discipline.

59.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

In 1901,H.G.Wells,an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the“moon people”they met.In turn.the“moon people”expressed their surprise.

“Why,”they asked.“are you travelling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?”

H.G.Wells could only imagine travel to the moon.In 1969, human beings really did land on the moon.People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the“moon people”asked is still an interesting one.A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it

Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo,Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The“Channel”,a tunnel(隧道)connecting England and France,is now completed.

But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems called“Alice Cities”.The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping areas, and so on.A solar dome(圓頂狀的東西)would cover the whole city.

Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The surface, they say,can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness.H.G.Wells'“moon people”would agree.Would you?

C.Enjoy Living Underground         D.Building Down,not Up

Of all the websites, one that has attracted attention recently is myspace.com.Most of this attention has come from the media and tells every reason why the website should be shut down. The threat of internet predators(掠奪者)is indeed a tough reality, but shutting down the site is not the answer. If myspace.com.were shut down, another site would quickly take its place. Therefore, the right way is to teach teens how to use the site safely and educate them about who may be predators and how to avoid them.

The key to staying safe on the Internet is to make sure that your profile(個人資料)is secure. The simplest way is to change the privacy setting on your profile to“private”.which protects your information so that only the people on your friend list can view it.Although this is effective,it is not perfect.Predators can find ways to view your profile if they really want to,whether through hacking in or figuring out their way onto your friend list. Thus, you should never post too much personal information. Some people actually post their home and school addresses, date of birth, and other personal information, often letting predators know exactly where they will be and when. The safest information is your first name and province.Anything more is basically inviting a predator into your life.

Another big issue is photos. I suggest completely skipping photos and never posting a photo of a friend online without asking permission.

Most importantly, never, under any circumstances, agree to a real-life meeting with anyone you meet online. No matter how well you think you know this person, there are no guarantees that they have told the truth. But you could feel free to chat with people you meet on the site, but just remember that not everyone is who they say they are.Hopefully, the next time you edit your profile, you'll be more informed

about the dangers of Internet predators and take the steps to defend yourself.

64.Kids can avoid web predators successfully by

A.a(chǎn)ttracting more public attention        B.shutting down the website“myspace.com”

65.The safest basic personal information that you can share online is

A.your home address and birthday    B.your school address and your first name

C.your first name and province      D.your province and cell phone number

66.We can learn from the passage that

A.  not  everybody  you meet online is honest and reliable

B.it is not acceptable to post a photo of a friend online

C.it is not safe chatting with grown-ups on the website

D.only you and your friends can view your personal profile

67.What could be the best title of this passage?

A.Web Safety for Teens.    B.Personal Safety.

C.Web Hackers in the Past. D.Predators' Tricks.

The phone is ringing at the other end of the line and it clicks as it is being answered.A voice says quickly,“Hello. Will you hold, please?”Then there is another click, followed by silence. It seems like hours before someone comes back on the line-that is, if you don't hang up first.

Office calls are, perhaps, the most difficult and the most important part of a secretary's work. The first impression that a client(當(dāng)事人)receives about a business is very often through a telephone contact.A caller who is left hanging on“hold”will get the feeling that he or she has been forgotten or ignored. If a call is answered rudely, the caller may become angry. And if the call is not routed directly to the right person, the caller may feel that he or she is getting the“runaround”.

Laura Needham is a secretary in the executive(行政部門)office of a large manufacturing company. As a good office secretary,Laura knows that all phone calls must be answered without delay and handled efficiently. She knows that a secretary must be pleasant and helpful,no matter how busy she is or what kind of mood she may be in.She knows she must keep calm if a caller gets impatient or becomes angry;also,of course, she knows she can never allow herself to lose her temper. If she does not have the information the caller asks for,she must know who does have the information. Finally, she knows that one of her most important responsibilities is to“screen telephone calls”and to know which calls to refer to her boss, which calls to refer to other people, and which calls to handle herself.

A well-handled telephone call will give the caller a good impression of the company he or she is dealing with. For this reason,an office secretary who can handle telephone calls cheerfully, tactfully(機(jī)智地),and efficiently is a valuable asset to any organization.

68.Good secretaries find it           to handle office calls well.

I was walking along the main street of a small seaside town in the north of England looking for somewhere to make a phone call.My car had broken down outside the town and I wanted to contact the AA.Low grey clouds were gathering across the sky and there was a cold damp wind blowing off the sea which nearly threw me off my feet every time I crossed one of the side streets. It had rained in the night and water was dripping from the bare trees that lined the street.I was glad that I was wearing a thick coat.

There was no sign of a call box,nor was there anyone at that early hour whom I could ask.I had thought I might find a shop open selling the Sunday papers or a milkman doing his rounds, but the town was completely dead. The only living thing I saw was a thin frightened cat outside a small restaurant.

Then suddenly I found what I was looking for. There was a small post office, and almost hidden from sight in a dark narrow street next to it was the town's only public call box, which badly needed a coat of paint.I hurried forward, but stopped in astonishment when I saw through the dirty glass that there was a man inside. He Was fat.a(chǎn)nd was wearing a cheap blue plastic raincoat.I could not see his face and he did not even raise his head at the sound of my footsteps.

Discreetly(謹(jǐn)慎地),I remained standing a few feet away and lit a cigarette to wait my turn.It was when I threw the dead match on the ground that I noticed something bright red trickling from under the call box door.

One kind of vacation that many Americans enjoy is camping. Each summer millions of Americans drive to the countryside where they find places to camp. The national parks, many of which are in the mountains, are favorite camping places.Campers walk, swim and fish. They can also find many kinds of animals and plants in the parks.Mostly they enjoy a change from their busy lives in the city. Some campers have trailers which they drive or pull behind their cars to their camp sites.Trailers are like houses on wheels. They have many conveniences which people have in their homes, such as electricity and hot water. But most campers don't have trailers. They camp in tents which they set up in their camp sites.

Campers in tents don't have the conveniences that campers in trailers have.Tent campers enjoy a very simple life.

Perhaps more than any other people.Americans have come to depend on their cars. The family car has been a common thing since tIle early 20th century, and it has changed American life,Many people have moved outside of the large cities to the country. Some Americans spend two hours a day or more in their cars going to work and home again. Cars have become the means of transportation for most Americans going shopping, and even going on vacations.Americans used to like big cars, and gasoline used to be very inexpensive.Recently, however, the cost of gas has increased, and smaller cars have become more common.Americans have bought large numbers of Japanese and German cars. They have bought cars from several other countries as well.

Dear John,

We held a speech contest on the playground last Saturday morning.Twenty students selected from tenclasses, two for each class, took part in it.Five teachers of English worked as judges and all the students in the school viewed the contest. The topic is“to make our campus more beautiful”.In their speeches, the students insisted that we should keep our campus clean by avoiding littering, take good care of the plants so that we can enjoy the greenness, behave well and care for others so that everyone feels loved on campus. Finally, six students gained prizes, including the two from my class.  I think all of us have learned a lot from the contest. We all mean what we say.So our campus will surely become more beautiful.

Do you have such activities in your school?

    Best wishes to you.

Yours

Li Hua
