Crossroads International

How does Crossroads work?

Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn’t want and give them to people who badly need them.We collect those goods and give them to the welfare agencies in Chinese Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, elsewhere in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. So Crossroads is just that: a crossroads between need and resource.

Who do we help?

The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets. They are grass roots groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it.They can’t get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery(文具) to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.

How do we operate?

Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send, They are donated.Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight(貨運(yùn)), we ask transport companies to donate their services.Nobody in our organization receives a salary.Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary basis.

Those that donate goods and services:

?Factories

?Hospitals

?Educational Institutions

?Transport Companies

?Manufacturers

?Hotels

?Householders

?Other Charities

?Offices

One resource that we are always in need of is people, while we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.

What can I do?

We are always in need of people. We have a lot of tasks. If you are volunteering regularly, we can offer work in some of the following categories, some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate them.

?Clothing categorization

?Toy categorization

?Book categorization

?Household goods categorization

?Electrical goods categorization

?Stationery categorization

?Medical categorization

?Sewing

?Furniture handling

?Driving

?Office work

?Bookkeeping

?Fund-raising

WASHINGTON―President Bush plans to meet next week with top Pentagon and State Department officials, and hopes to offer a revised Iraq plan within two weeks, aides said Friday.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said today Bush wants to give a major speech on Iraq before Christmas, “but that is not set in stone.”

At a morning meeting with congressional leaders, Bush said, “We talked about the need for a new way forward in Iraq.”

Bush will visit the State Department on Monday and meetings with military officials will follow over the next two days, according to a tentative White House schedule. All are involved in an ongoing administration review of the situation in Iraq.

“These are deliberative(慎重的) meetings and discussions,” said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council.“They will inform the president’s thinking, and he will inform their thinking.”

Bush said he is also reviewing the Iraq Study Group report released Wednesday. Its suggestions include withdrawing US troops by early 2008, conditions permitting, and a new diplomatic(外交的) effort including Iraq’s neighbors, Iran and Syria.

The president said he also wanted the troops home too, but not until the new Iraq government can sustain(支撐) itself. He expressed skepticism(懷疑態(tài)度) about possible talks with Iran and Syria, saying they must stop efforts to undermine(削弱) Iraq’s fledgling(年輕的) democracy.

The church seems cold this morning, even after all the people, friends and family fill the benches.I sit here in silence, in shock and denial. This was not supposed to happen. What about our dreams, or our plans? We were going to raise our children, travel around the world, and grow old together.I’m only 37, a typical housewife.I don’t know if I can do all this alone―two children, no father. What do I do or say?

The faces of so many people confuse me as they come to pay their last respects. Some have real sorrow; I can see it in their eyes. The others seem to just say.“I told you so.” Those famous last words: I―told―you―so.How I can’t stand them. And the pointing fingers as so-called family and so-called friends pick me out of the crowd for others to see.I want to scream and wake up but I can’t do anything but sit there. How can they be so blind? I fell in love with a man.Love knows no boundaries.

He was a good man, hardworking, caring and kind.He was retired form the Navy and a gentleman. He was sensitive to others’ needs, the kind of man that knew what to do or say, how to humor any situation and calm everyone’s fears.I remember our first child was a big surprise to both of us.I remember when I told him the news.He fell off his chair, saying over and over in disbelief.“But I’m almost sixty.” After a few months he started planning our next and even doing his famous little dance whenever he discussed the idea.

A man, thirty years older than I, lies in a coffin.Flowers, the American flag and his VFW comrades surround him, paying tribute(頌詞) to him as the man he really was.And I sit alone here, with our two children, in silence, praying that his cold morning at church is only a nightmare(夢魘) and I will awake to his loving arms again.

Our son, our first born, his joy and pride, sits to the right of me, seeming just as confused as me.I look over at him.How he looks like his father―blonde hair, tall and skinny―even his Irish temperament(氣質(zhì)) and that naughty look in his eyes. He’s wearing his father’s watch. It’s too big for him but he refused to take it off.I know he’ll keep it safe. Our second, the little angel and Daddy’s little girl, lies in her stroller(嬰兒車) in the aisle, sound asleep. She’ll never remember the man she called “Da”.

63.The man passed away, leaving his dearest woman to bring up their two children, the elder of whom is a boy of about _________.

      A.1                   B.3                 C.7                    D.9

64.The last paragraph, which is italicized, does not lie where it originally was. It’s better for it to go back _________.

      A.between Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2

B.between Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3

C.between Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4

D.to the very front

65.We can infer from the passage that ___________.

A.the woman’s family were against her marriage to the man

B.none of the people there showed real sympathy to the woman

C.the woman did something wrong

D.the family had lived a happy life before the man died

66.In paragraph 3, the underlined word “our next” means _________.

A.our next dance                           B.our next news

C.what for us to do next                     D.our next baby

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers said, “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.” How right they were!

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” when others shout, “No, you can’t!” It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mc Clintock, a geneticist(遺傳學(xué)家) who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted.Yet she didn’t let up on her experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age.At 90, cellist(大提琴家) Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.As the music flowed through his fingers, his bent shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.As author and poet Samuel once wrote, “Years make the skin old, but to give up enthusiasm makes the soul old

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money, title or power.Patricia Mcllrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, I never made a penny until I stopped working for money.”

If we cannot do what we love as a fulltime career, we can do it as a hobby.Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended her sadness that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “I am persuaded to call Layton a genius.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses―finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, and the beauty of a rainbow.

67.The passage mainly shows us ________.

A.enthusiasm is the basic element of everything

B.enthusiasm helps us to succeed to a greater degree

C.enthusiasm makes us experience more life

D.we can do nothing without enthusiasm

68.From the example of the Nobel Prize winner Barbara Mc Clitock, we may find _______.

A.enthusiasm can encourage us in difficult times

B.enthusiastic people always get a deep pleasure from work

C.you can’t make any achievement if you have no enthusiasm

D.enthusiastic people are sure to gain great fame in the end

69.The underlined sentence in Paragraph Three suggests _________.

A.time and tide wait for no man

B.we grow old as time goes on

C.people feel young with enthusiasm

D.our soul becomes old with enthusiasm

70.The main idea of the last paragraph is ___________.

A.we should try heart and soul to win what we want

B.enthusiasm can give us pleasure, though we have to sweat

C.we have not enough money to buy what we need

D.enthusiasm with sweat is what we need

Frederick M.Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on many public issues. He says that a long summer vacation doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of kids spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.

Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job.But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don’t give kids an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(連續(xù)的) weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.

Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom.Now, two-thirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break.Someone must watch the kids.

But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement.Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose significant ground in the summertime.

A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boring work.Rather, it should allow time-pressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons.Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts.Summer vacation can be a grand thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.

I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent.

I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓約) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today.

So here’s what I wanted to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, the larger house.

Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure (休閑), it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted.

It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.

I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned.

By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion (激情) as it ought to be lived.

60. The best title of this passage probably is _____________.

B. By learning from her friends.

       C. Through an unfortunate experience.

D. From her children and husband.

62. By the underlined sentence “It is so easy to exist instead of to live” in the fifth paragraph, the author really means that people tend to _____________.

       A. make a living rather than live a real life

B. work rather than enjoy life

       C. waste a lot in life

D. forget the most important lessons in life

Scientists smiled as the three young whales swam through the ocean, turning over, jumping, and racing one another in circles around the ship. After spending seven months in a 60,000 gallon (228,000-liter) pool at the New England Aquarium(水族館)in Boston, Mass, the whales were now free.

The pilot whales, named Notch Small and Tag, had been staying at the pool ever since they were saved after running aground (擱淺地) on a Cape Cod beach in Massachusetts last December. Although about 60 other whales died during that running aground the three young whales were saved and nursed back to health. Last June, the whales were freed from a ship about 120 miles (152 kilometers) off the coast of Massachusetts. When the three whales finally swam away from the ship. scientists on board cheered. The event, say the biologists, marked the first time that a group of whales has been saved, cared for, and freed back into the wild.

No one knows what causes whales to run aground. Some biologists think that gently sloping beaches may upset the whales’ sonar systems(聲納系統(tǒng)). Whales find schools of fish and other objects by bouncing sonar waves off the objects. When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, the sonar waves may bounce away(反彈)from the whale instead of toward it. The whale may end up in shallow water and run aground.

Other experts think a leader of a group of whales becomes ill and beaches itself. Because whales often band together, other whales soon follow, running aground as well.

64. After spending seven months in a pool the pilot whales, named Notch Small and Tag, were freed in ____________.

       A. autumn                                                B. spring

       A. had been less successful

B. had never been successful

       C. had even been successful

D. had once been successful

66. Some scientists believe that once the leading whale in a group falls ill and runs aground, ___________.

       A. others may band together

B. others may fall ill, too.

       C. others will not care for it and run away

       D. others will follow and beach themselves, too.

67. When a whale approaches a gently sloping beach, ____________.

       A. it may be able to send out sonar waves

       B. its sonar waves may not bounce back to it

       C. its sonar waves may disappear

       D. its sonar waves become stronger

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy, who could not have been more than seven or eight years old, replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed (壓抑的) lately.”

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike any more. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why?

Human development is based not only on innate (天生的) biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.

In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示) machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information, and indiscriminately (不加區(qū)分地), to all viewers alike, whether children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.

Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practices. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

       A. the widespread influence of television

       B. the poor arrangement of teaching content

       D. the constantly rising standard of living

70. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children?

The secret of success

Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69, was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared more than 800 commercials for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. “As long as it works,” he said in 1991, “I’ll continue to do those commercials.”

Even though he was successful, Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. “He still won’t let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he has never had proper-fitting shoes,” Wendy said in 1993 and told us that sixty-one years ago, Dave Thomas was born to a single mother, he was adopted as a baby by Rex and Auleva Thomas when he was six weeks old. After Auleva died when he was 5, Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. “He fed me,” Thomas said, “and if I got out of line, he’d beat me.” “When I found out I was adopted, I didn’t want to talk about it, and as I talked to people I grew older… I got really a lot of encouragement.” When he was 12 years old, Thomas started working at a barbecue restaurant in Knoxville, Tenne. Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. “I thought if I owned a restaurant,” he said, “I could eat for free.” When he was 24, meeting with Harland Sanders led Thomas to a career as a manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that made him a millionaire in 1968.

A year later, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, in Columbus, Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With 6, 000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales.

Thomas got married in 1954 to Lorraine and they had four grown kids besides Wendy. Although troubled by his own experience with an adoption, he felt they could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption in 1992. Later, Thomas, who had left school at 15, graduated from Coconut Great High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him “Most likely to succeed”. Thomas is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lorraine, five children and 16 grandchildren. His foundation helps raise awareness for the 134000 foster children available for adoption, and helps make adoption more affordable. “The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave,” said his friend Pat Williams. “He wasn’t a great actor or a great speaker.” He was just Joe Everybody.”
