Xi’an - A fire at a large shopping mall in the city of Baoji in Northwest Shanxi Province killed at least eight people and injured 23 others, a local official said on Saturday. The fire broke out at 8: 30 p.m. on Saturday on the third floor of the six-story Renmin Shopping Mall, the official said. Eight victims, including one woman, died while trying to escape the blaze. Six suffocated, and two fell to their deaths.

An explosion on Thursday killed one and injured 21 in a busy street in Tongren, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

　　The bomb was hidden in a rubbish bin in the city’s commercial hub（商業(yè)中心），where lots of shops and restaurants are concentrated.

　　The ear-splitting blast was heard around 12∶50 p.m.，said a local newspaper, citing witnesses. The power of the blast shattered（使粉碎）nearby shop windows and ripped the stainless（不生銹的）steel rubbish can to pieces.

　　One passer-by，identified（確認）only as Zhang，said she was shocked by the noise and saw a lot of pedestrians lying on the ground when she got to the scene.

Dear Sir,

Mr. Smith wrote to your newspaper to complain that his telephone was out of order for more than a week.

We received a complaint from Mr. Smith at 2:30 p.m. on May 6. The next day we sent workmen to Mr. Smith’s house to repair his telephone. The men discovered that there was something wrong with the underground cable. They dug up 15 feet of the cable and saw many white ants. These ants had attacked the cable and damaged it badly.
