One kind of letter most people enjoy writing is the letter of thanks or appreciation. It's pleasant to say "thank you" to someone who has been generous or thoughtful.

Every gift, however trifling, should be acknowledged(表示感謝)with a note of thanks. Every favor or courtesy(禮貌)- every kindness or attention on the part of a neighbor or friend - every expression of hospitality- certainly every letter of condolence(吊唁)or congratulation - deserves sincere and gracious(有禮貌的)acknowledgement.

It doesn't matter if you have already expressed your appreciation in person; a letter must still be written. It can be as brief and simple as you like, but it should express your appreciation with sincerity and warmth. Remember that half the joy of giving is the anticipation(預(yù)料)of receiving pleased acknowledgement, and surely the person who has been thoughtful or generous toward you deserves that satisfaction!

The underlined word "trifling" probably means "________".

A. of little value    B. important     C. valuable       D. precious

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. We need not write a letter of thanks if we have already said "thank you" personally.

B. Usually no replies are written to letters of condolence.

C. Our letters of thanks may be short, but we should be sincere.

D. We should not, however, expect letters of thanks for what we give.

A few years ago, I was with a close woman friend in a grocery store in California. As we walked along the aisle (過(guò)道), we saw a mother with a small boy moving in the opposite direction and met us head-on (正面的) in each aisle. The woman barely noticed us because she was so angry with her little boy, who wanted to pull items off the lower shelves. As the mother became more and more annoyed, she started to yell at the child and several aisles later had progressed to shaking him by the arm.k+s-5#u

At this point my friend spoke up.A wonderful mother of three and founder of a progressive school, she had probably never once in her life treated any child so harshly(嚴(yán)厲地).I expected my friend would give this woman a solid mother-to-mother talk about controlling herself and about the effect this behavior has on a child.Instead, my friend said, “What a beautiful little boy.How old is he?” The woman answered cautiously, “He’s three.” My friend went on to comment on how curious he seemed and how her own three children were just like him in the grocery store, pulling things off shelves, so interested in all the wonderful colors and packages.“He seems so bright and intelligent,” my friend said.

The woman had the boy in her arms by now and a shy smile came upon her face.Gently brushing his hair out of his eyes, she said, “Yes, he’s very smart and curious, but sometimes he wears me out.” My friend responded sympathetically(表示同情地), “Yes, they can do that; they are so full of energy.”

As we walked away, I heard the mother speaking kindly to the boy about getting home and cooking his dinner.“We’ll have your favorite — macaroni(通心面) and cheese,” she told him.

第二節(jié)讀寫(xiě)任務(wù)(共1小題,滿(mǎn)分25分)

閱讀下面短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。

The Guangzhou Children’s Palace and Urbanities Growing magazine last week published the results of survey about how children and parents view thankfulness. 84% of parents think that today most children do not feel a sense of thankfulness toward their parents. 90% of the parents said that the key to teaching children to be thankful toward their parents is for parents to set a good example themselves. If parents expect their kids to be more thankful to them, they themselves should be thankful toward their kids as well as toward others.

How do children understand the idea of being thankful? Most children think that being thankful means repaying those who have supported them. 44% of the children think that they should be grateful to those who once helped them or brought them happiness; 36% of the children think that if someone helped them before, then they should do something for him or her in return; and 20% said that they should be grateful to their parents for bringing them up. No kids think that being thankful was something out of date.
