Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just __________as spindly stilettos (細(xì)高跟鞋).

"It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis (骨關(guān)節(jié)炎) — and once you do, it is too ]ate," said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicine.

"I compare it to smoking — one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is. Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long, "Kerrigan said. "They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as had for your knees."

The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn't new — scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained (扭傷) ankles and back problems.

But in 1998,Kerdgan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage (軟骨) surrounding the knee.

The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing.

"This study confirms what we all intuitively (直覺地) know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health," said Dr. Glenn Pfeifer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.

Healthy knees aren’t the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos(細(xì)高跟鞋).“It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis(骨關(guān)節(jié)炎)—and once you do it,it is too late,”said Dr.Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School’s department of physical medicine.“I compare it to smoking—one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is.Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable,so women wear them all day long,”Kerrigan said.“They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as bad for your knees.”

In the study, researchers had twenty women wear two pairs of shoes with three-inch heels, one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one.The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women’s knees by both types of shoes. The women also walked bare-foot to test normal pressure. The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees.Compared with walking barefoot, the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent.Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis, experts say.

The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn’t new—scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained(扭傷)ankles and back problems. But in 1998,Kerrigan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis,a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage(軟骨)surrounding the knee. The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing.“This study confirms what we all intuitively(直覺地)know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health,”said Dr.Glem Pfeffer,a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.

Health food is a general term applied to all kinds of food that is considered more healthy than the types of food sold in supermarkets. For example, whole grains, dried beans, and corn oil are health foods.A narrower classification of health food is natural food. This term is used to distinguish between types of the same food.Raw honey is a natural sweetener, while refined(提煉的)sugar is not.The most exact term of all and the narrowest classification within health food is organic food, used to describe food that has been grown on a particular kind of farm.Fruits and vegetables that are grown in gardens, that are treated only with organic fertilizers, that are not sprayed with poisonous insecticides(殺蟲劑),and that are not refined after harvest, are organic food.

In choosing the type of food you eat, then you have basically two choices:inorganic, processed(加工)food or organic, unprocessed food.A wise decision should include study of the reason why processed food contains chemicals, some of which are proved to be poisonous and that vitamin content is greatly reduced in processed food.

Bread is typically used by health food supporters as an example of a processed food. First, the seeds from which the grain is grown are treated with a chemical which is extremely harmful. Later, the grain is sprayed with a number of very deadly insecticides. After the grain has been made into flour, it is made white with another chemical which is also poisonous. Next, a dough conditioner is added along with a softener. The conditioner and softener are poisons, and in fact, the softener has sickened and killed experimental animals.

A very poisonous antifungal compound is added to keep the bread from getting moldy(發(fā)霉的).

Other food from the supermarket would show a similar pattern of processing and preserving. You see, we buy our food on the basis of smell, color, and texture, instead of vitamin content, and manufacturers give us what we want, even if it is poisonous. The alternative? Eat health foods, preferably the organic variety.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Health food. B.The processing of bread.

C.Processed food. D.Poisons.

2.What do all of the additives in bread have in common?

A.They are all used to keep the bread from getting moldy.

B.They are all poisonous.

C.They are all organic.

D.They have all killed laboratory animals.

3.What happens to food when it is processed?

A.The basic content remains the same.

B.Vitamin is not available after processing.

C.The vitamin content increases a bit.

D.The vitamin content is greatly reduced.

4.We normally buy food on the basis of________.

A. organic variety B. beauty

C. refined contents D. smell, color and texture
