閱讀短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容回答問題,將答案寫在相應(yīng)的橫線上。

Reading is a very important skill. Reading is also an excellent way to improve your English. However, to make sure what you read isn’t too difficult, it’s important to know what makes passages difficult and how you can improve your understanding of them. Here are some suggestions:

Firstly, the way you read something depends very much on your purpose(目的) for reading it. The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel(小說) for pleasure in the summer holidays.

Next, find something out about the topic(主題) you are going to read. The more background information you have, the easier it’ll be to understand the text. You can get this background information in your own language.

Then, of course, reading itself is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary(詞匯量), but there are many other things you can do. The more vocabulary you have, the easier your reading will be.

And finally, a common mistake(錯(cuò)誤) is to read everything very slowly and carefully, looking up each unknown word. Sometimes this is necessary. However, it takes a long time and can be very boring, it can even make understanding more difficult! Using your dictionary correctly(正確地) is important.

If you’ve followed the above advice and still can’t understand a text, then it’s simply too hard for you. Stop reading and ask someone to help you. Nobody likes to give up, but you’ll just be wasting your time if you continue to work at a text that’s too difficult for you.

16. How can you get background information?
