The Olympic Games have changed a lot since they were first held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. At that time, winners got silver medals instead of gold ones. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? People thought silver was better than gold．No women competed in the first Olympics, and only 14 countries took part.

　　When she turned ten, my daughter decided I was no longer good enough to provide input on anything useful．Then, in high school she took a parenting class．

　　“Mum, I need your idea,” she told me．“What are the skills you need to be a good parent?” she asked, pencil pointed over her homework．

　　Skills? I’d always thought of parenting as requiring patience, understanding and kindness．And I was pretty sure those were characteristics(性格), not skills．

　　“Hang on, I know this one,” I told her, thinking fast．Looking at the wall calendar(日歷), I noted that my next seven days included two appointments(約會), 20 minutes each, three forms to hand in at two different schools and a cover for the pool to pick up．“Organizational(組織的)skills,” I answered．“It also helps if you can drive－and have the ability to be in two places at once．”

She was a poor girl who worked to get money to pay for her lessons. She became the famous woman scientist of her time. That's the story of Marie Curie's life. She didn't mind working and she didn't care about the honors(榮譽)that were given to her in later years.
Marie was born in 1867. Her name was Marie Sklosovska then. She lived in Poland. Her father was a teacher. Everyone soon saw that Marie had a quick mind.

After four years' hard work, Marie and her husband found something which was called radium(鐳). They were given the Nobel Prize(諾貝爾獎)for their great discovery(發(fā)現(xiàn)). But they were too ill to go Stockholm themselves to receive it.
Marie always said that it was because of her children that she want her work. And she discovered a hidden power and gave it to the world. It was the same power, however, that killed Marie in 1934.
