Most dictionaries will tell you a number of things about a language. There are three important things. The three things are spelling, pronunciation(發(fā)音)and meanings.

First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order(按字母順序)--a, b, c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the wordpoor--p, o, o, r --comes beforepoverty--p, o, v, e, r, t, y --and the wordpovertycomes before the wordpower--p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical order.

The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most dictionaries give phonetic(語的),or sound, alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International(國際的)Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the common wordgethas over 20 different meanings.

It is very important to be able to control yourself. Losing control may bring things that would never want to see. We can learn something from the following story.

Once a boy often made trouble. His mother gave him many nails (釘子). She told him to hammer (錘,釘) one in the garden fence (柵欄), every time he lost his patience (耐心) and fought with someone. The first day he hammered 27 nails. In the following weeks he learned how to control himself better and the number of the nails he hammered became smaller and smaller. He learned it was easier to control himself than to hammer nails.

The day finally came when he didn’t hammer any nails. He went to tell his mother about it. Then his mother told him to pull off a nail from the fence each time he didn’t lose his patience. After some days he told his mother that all the nails had been pulled off. Thus, she took him to the fence and said to him, “You’ve behaved(表現(xiàn)) well, but look at all the holes in the fence. The fence will never be again like it was before. When you fight with someone, you leave wounds(傷口) in him like these. The trouble may be over, but the wounds will always be there.”

So, learn to control yourself before you hammer the nails in the fence. Try not to leave any holes in your past.
