If you ask some people, “How did you learn English so well?”you may get a surprising answer:“In my sleep!”
These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test learn-while-you-sleep methods (方法), which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.
Specialists(專家) say that this sleep-study method speeds language learning tremendously(巨大地). They say that the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day-and this does not affect(影響) his rest in any way. A word of warning, however: sleep-teaching will only hammer into your head what you have studied already while you are awake.
In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast(廣播) over the radio at intervals of a fortnight ( two weeks). Each lesson lasted twelve hours-from: 8 p. m. to 8 a. m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the student awake. At 11 p. m. a soothing (起鎮(zhèn)靜作用的) lullaby (催眠曲) was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a. m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes of revision (repeating a lesson ). Then he was lulled back to rest again while the radio purred on. At 5 o'clock his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before his hard-earned breakfast.

A.English is the only subject that is taught by the sleep-study method.
B.Only specially clever students can learn by the sleep-study method.
C.At the time of writing there had been only one sleep-study experiment.
D.Specialists seem to think that the sleep-study method is a good way to learn.

Dr. Lynn Moorman was a young doctor. She had a strange experience in June when she was spending Saturday night at her parents’ house. Whenever she stayed with them, she slept on the long sofa in the sitting room. The sofa was set against a wall under a large picture window (整塊玻璃做的景觀窗).
Around three o’clock that morning, Dr. Moorman opened her eyes and noticed a flashing light outside the house. She thought that it was a firefly (螢火蟲(chóng)). A moment later, as the light continued to flash, she realized that it was too bright to be a firefly.
Then the light moved towards the window and unbelievably through the window into the room. It passed in front of her, perhaps as close as three feet. Then Dr. Moorman noticed that it appeared to have two sets of wires (電線) coming from the top and bottom (底部). Each time the object flashed, Dr. Moorman saw it clearly. But when the light turned off, the object was no longer seen.
Dr. Moorman was quite scared. She thought about shouting, but couldn’t open her mouth. When the light moved into the kitchen, she ran to her sister’s bedroom. “Move over,” she said, “ I saw something, maybe an alien, that scared me and I’m coming into bed with you.” The next morning at breakfast she told her family what had happened, but no one else had noticed anything. Her experience remains a puzzle.
