It was reported today that in China, 56% of people who write blogs(博客) do so as a personal diary and 83% use their blogs for sending messages to friends. It was also found that there is a strong East- West difference. In places like the US, blogs that offer information on news attract more readers but in China, blogs are more likely to be about sharing personal feelings.
It seems that bloggers can be divided into three types: IT bloggers, bloggers who record their ordinary feelings and media(媒體) bloggers.
When blogging first started, the IT people had the technological advantage and they took the chance to put their thoughts on the web. Some of these IT people now have had over a million people read their blogs.
The next wave of bloggers did not have any training as writers or in IT and wrote about normal daily life. Media bloggers, however, are trained writers, such as journalists and editors. When the many media bloggers showed up, the everyday bloggers lost most of their readers. Media bloggers have the advantage of knowing how to communicate well through the written words.
However, the normal bloggers are still out there and increasing in number. It seems that blogging is the new way to express your feelings. People feel like the world is listening to, or rather reading, their problems, even if they are not.

Have you ever thought, “ I wish I could take a year off and just travel around the world?”Well, three lucky American teenagers were able to do just that. The teens –two males and one female—got an all-expenses-paid, yearlong hike to five continents(五大洲).
This trip didn’t include any five-star hotels or shopping funs. Eighteen-year-old Jamie Fiel from Keller, Texas, 17-year-old Arsen Ewing from Canyon, California, and 16-year-old Tyler Robinson from Lincoln, Massachusetts, didn’t expect fancy treatment. They signed up the experience of a lifetime, which included hard work, often uncomfortable accommodations, and encountered with some of nature’s most dangerous animals and environments.
Jamie, Arsen and Tyler were among hundreds of high school kids nominated by their science teachers to take this trip. Earthwatch Institute sponsored(贊助) this adventure. Each year, Earthwatch employs thousands of volunteers worldwide to help with scientific research projects.
The group went all around the world to get a close look at the most pressing environmental issues of time.Their assignments(工作) were as varied as their locations, and included measuring and attending pink flamingos (火烈鳥) in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, and tracking giant sea turtles in Costa Rica.
As they worked with the Earthwatch scientists, Jamine, Arsen, and Tyler began to understand that we are at a critical moment in the life of our planet. Time for change is running out. This reports shows something of home computer use by a group of young people. It is a common idea that children today know about computers and have a good knowledge of using them in all sides of their lives. We decided to try to find out whether this was true.
We asked thirty young people between 14 and 18. All the children said they had computers at home. We asked them how much time they usually spent on their computers in a week, but we were most interested in what they used their computers for.
The usual time spent on a computer in a week was about 12 hours, with the highest user about 32 hours and the lowest user only 5 hours. There was no great difference between boys and girls.
All the children said they usually used the computer to play games. Fourteen told us they did some wordprocessing(文字處理) at home, but not very much. Only 2 of them said that computers helped them with their studies, and 8 people told us they kept addresses and telephone numbers on their computers or used them as diaries. Only 3 people said they were learning to make computer programmes, and nobody looked up databases(數(shù)據(jù)庫) (other than their address lists). None of the people used their computers for any other use. The diagram(圖表) gives all the results one by one.
The results show that computer use is quite high among 14-18 year-old children. They also show quite clearly that computers are seen by most young people as little more than games machines. The only other great uses are for wordprocessing and keeping address lists. It seems to us that, though computers are common in the homes of young people, they have not yet become useful in everyday life.
