Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy (like milk and cheese), grains (like bread and rice), fruit, and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. The USDA also suggests (建議)how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.

As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount () of grains, fruit and vegetables, Because of the way they eat, they have a high rate () of cancer (癌癥) and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along with the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food.

Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits. Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.

Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects (影響) us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause (引起) diseases. We can change our eating habits now and enjoy many years of healthy living.

Summer holiday would begin at the weekend, so Bright Middle School decided to hold a school party on Friday evening. The girl students were talking about what they were going to wear.

“I’m going to wear a short red dress, so everybody will notice me,” said Sandy. “How about you, Susan?” “I’ll wear blue jeans, an old shirt, and a funny hat. People will notice me more than you!” Susan said.

“What are we going to do about the boys?” asked Vicky, “Do you remember the school party we had last year? The boys just stood there; nobody invited us to dance, and we girls had to dance by ourselves!” “I hear that some of the boys have learned how to dance in the past two or three months. I’m sure we can find our partners this time.” said Julia.

On Friday evening, at about seven, groups of students came into the activity hall of the school. Then the music began. The girls stood in a line on the side, and the boys on another side. Mrs. Mott, their teacher, tried to get them together, but failed. After a short while a tall boy called Joe said, “I don’t want to stand here for the whole night.” After finishing his words, he started to dance by himself. All the others watched him. In about two or three minutes, Susan came up to join him. Then Thomas asked Sandy if she’d like to dance with him. Next was Paul and Vicky. Then more and more people began to dance, and there were more dancers than watchers.

At about 8 o’clock, Vicky, holding a microphone in her hand, began to sing, “Should old acquaintance (朋友) be forgot and never brought to mind,…” Then Sandy came up with the song of My Heart Will Go On. Yellow, orange, red and green tree leaves make autumn a colorful time! Who paints all these colors? It is the leaves themselves.

Inside a leaf, there are millions of little color bags. They are green, yellow and orange. The green ones are called chlorophyll (葉綠素).  The yellow ones are called xanthophylls (葉黃素). The orange ones are carotene (胡蘿卜素).

In the summer, the green chlorophyll is very, very busy. It makes food for the tree. It catches sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) into sugar. This sugar is the food for the tree. It is also busy that it covers up all of the other colors in the leaf.

When the weather grows colder in autumn, there is less light and water for trees. The trees will have a rest and get ready for winter. Theyve made enough food in summer! The leaves no longer need water to make food.

Without the water, the green chlorophyll starts to go away. The other colors in the leaf - the yellow xanthophylls and the orange carotene-come out. So the leaves dont really turn a certain color -they just lose their green!

But how about the red, purple and green leaves? The leaves look red or purple because they have some sugar in them. They steal some food from the tree! The green leaves are from the evergreen trees (常青樹). Their leaves dont lose water in winter. So, the green chlorophyll doesnt go away.

1. The leaves of trees in autumn turn yellow because there is ______.

        A. not enough sunlight. B. no sugar C. no water D. no chlorophyll working

2. The little color bags refer to _____

        A. green, yellow and orange     B. chlorophyll, carotene and xanthophylls

        C. carbon dioxide               D. sunlight and water

3. The third paragraph () mainly shows us _________.

A. what chlorophyll is         B. how chlorophyll makes water.

C. sugar is food for trees     D. how photosynthesis (光合作用) works

4. Which of the following is NOT TRUE?

A. In summer trees begin to shut down their food-making factories.

B. When autumn and winter come, the days get shorter and shorter.

C. During winter trees rest and live on the food they have stored.

D. In winter little bags are still in the leaves.

5. We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. water in the tree leaves makes them green.

B. sugar in the tree leaves makes them yellow.

C. sunlight makes tree leaves green.

D. carbon dioxide makes tree leaves green.
