Over 30% of the natural world has been seriously destroyed by humans (人類) over the last 30 years. This is because the number of people living on Earth is nearly six billion (十億). All of these people need food, space and energy. As a result, lots of Earth’s natural resources will be used up. When we destroy our earth to get natural resources such as wood or oil, animals often lose their living space. They cannot have enough food, and they will get hurt or die.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international charity. It tries to prevent humans from destroying more of nature than is necessary. For example, in China WWF is working with the local government to reconnect (重新連接) some small lakes in Anhui Province to the Yangtze River and to create(創(chuàng)造) more protected areas so that China’s natural beauty will not be lost in the future. WWF works in more than 50 countries, saving rainforests and stopping hunters from killing rare animals and protecting traditional ways of life in areas where they are in danger of being lost. WWF’s main goal is to encourage development that does not harm the environment and the animals that live in it. Even though the charity is known all over the world, and a lot of people support the goals of WWF, not so many donate money often. This makes it difficult for the charity to do all the things it wants to do.

A.Because too many people do not know WWF.

Have you ever wished to have an umbrella that makes your hands free? Alan Kaufman has come up with the “Nubrella”, which means “new” + “umbrella”. It is the first truly hands-free umbrella in the world. The inventor says that it stops rain, wind and snow and can keep your head, face and hair dry.
“I never planned to invent a product. I just noticed a problem and had a new idea,” said the inventor. The idea for the invention began on one rainy day. Mr Kaufman was standing in one of his stores. He began to look at people’s umbrellas. He found that they had to try very hard to keep their umbrellas in the right place. At that moment an idea came into his mind. He ran to his desk and drew a picture. In this way, the nubrella was born.
One cool feature of the nubrella is that you don’t hold it like a normal umbrella; you wear it. The shoulder straps (肩帶) of the nubrella allow people to be fully hands-free, so when walking in the rain with the nubrella, you are able to use your cell phone or drink a hot cup of coffee. Also, the nubrella will never be inverted (顛倒) in the wind. The new umbrella is far safer than traditional ones, because it has no sharp points.

Paul Nicklen waited patiently on a sheet of ice in the Arctic.  He was there to take pictures for National Geographic. Finally, he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear, swimming towards him in the icy water.
Paul lay down-on the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him! Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked or broke and the bear fell back into the water The polar bear wasn’t so lucky. It couldn’t get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.
To understand the polar bear’s problem, you need to know two things about the Arctic. First, the Arctic is mostly ocean. Second , ice cover a lot of the Arctic Ocean. In winter, the ice form a thick, white sheet, but in summer, the ice becomes thinner and break into pieces. Sea ice is the key to survival for Arctic animals. However, because of global warming, Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, their favourite meal. They stand on the ice wait for the seal to come up for air. As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes, or large pieces of floating ice. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown.
On his last trip, Paul Nicklen saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened Arctic ice, a dead bear was a rare sight, Paul is sad to see the dead bodies, wildlife experts thinks global warming will have a terrible effect on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bear. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050. in other word, polar bears are in great danger.

Tigers are terrible animals, but a cat is a cute animal.    As a mother, the Chinese-American writer Amy Chua is just a tiger . Her book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother (《虎媽?xiě)?zhàn)歌》), tells us how she gives her two children education.    She says that being strict is the only way to train a child’s talent. Her kids had to obey the following rules. To begin with, her kids weren’t allowed to watch TV or play computer games. Then, they were not allowed to “ hang out ” with other kids after school. Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no.” or “we don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文學(xué)家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we sill soon contact these beings(人;生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望遠(yuǎn)鏡) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望遠(yuǎn)鏡) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信號(hào)). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

小題5:What does the underlined phrase “l(fā)ife forms” in the last paragraph mean?
