If you were asked to recite lines of poetry that have the Chinese character “hua”—which means flower—how many could you recite?

He Liran, 13, had to tack on this challenge on a TV show aired by Shandong TV. He Liran, a student at the Harbin No 163 Middle School in Heilongjiang, competed with over 100 other students. The competitors took turns reciting lines of poetry that used the word “hua”, with He Liran replying to each one.

One competitor used the line “As if the vernal breeze had come back over night; adorning thousands of pear trees with blossoms white.” He Liran replied with “After one night of wind and showers; how many are the fallen flowers!”

At the end, He Liran won, reciting more than 60 out of the 127 lines that were recited in the competition.

Her lifelong love of reading helped her win. Her father started reading poems to her when she was just 4 years old. She has been a bookworm ever since.

Though busy with schoolwork, she spares time to study at least one poem each day. She thinks ancient poetry is still important, even in modern times.

“Once, I walked along a small path in a forest. The scenery was the same as what is described in the line ‘On the sandy path between pine-trees there is no mud’, which comes from one of Su Shi’s poems. At that moment, the line from his poem naturally came to my mind and I realized that poems can be part of our daily lives,” she said.

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “space meat”? It sounds quite weird. But in fact, it could very well be the future of the human diet.

A Russian astronaut recently “grew” meat aboard the International Space Station. Yes, you read that right - he grew it using cells( 細 胞 ) provided by an Israeli company called Aleph Farms. But in fact, he was not the first person to create lab-grown(實驗室培育的) meat. Dutch scientist Mark Post grew the first lab meat in 2013.

But why bother growing meat in a lab when we can get the real thing from cows? For one thing, lab-grown meat is healthier. “We gain greater control over what the meat consists of(由……組成), for example its fat content,” Post said in an interview with The Atlantic. Lab-grown meat is also free of the chemicals that are used on farms, such as pesticides(農(nóng)藥) and growth hormones(激素).

Are there other ways to replace(代替) regular meat? McDonalds is trying to do so with the P.L.T., which stands for plant, lettuce and tomato. The first P.L.T. burgers are already being sold in Canada, according to the fast food company.

The “meat” in the P.L.T. is made out of Beyond Meat, a plant-based meat substitute( 替 代 品 ) created by a company from Los Angeles, US. The company uses pea, rice and bean proteins to produce patties(肉餅) that look and taste like real meat.

Experts doubt whether these products are healthier than real meat. But they have already proven to be a success, with several fast food companies already offering such products on their menus, according to Fox Business.
