Some good manners in modern life
Do you often use a cell phone? Do you take the subway to school every day? These items make our modern life easier. But do you know how we should behave properly while using them? The following suggestions might be helpful.
For cell phone users
◆Keep your voice down when you make a phone call in public. Shouting on the phone may make others feel uncomfortable. And you’d better not use it during a meeting.
◆Don’t send messages at a dinner or a party. You shouldn’t play cell phone games either. It’s a good time to communicate with your family and friends.
◆Don’t make or answer a call while driving. It is not only very dangerous for both you and your passengers but also against the law.
For subway(地鐵) passengers
◆You are supposed to wait in a line while buying tickets and getting on the subway.
◆According to subway rules, you mustn’t eat, drink or smoke on the subway. The smell and noise may trouble others. It’s necessary to keep the train clean and tidy. Besides, smoking is bad for your health and harms people around you.
◆ You’d better not lie across the subway seats even if the train isn’t crowded. Offering your seat to someone who needs it is considered as good manners.

【題目】Jan was a window cleaner. One morning, Jan was in a lift of a high building with his window cleaning tools when the building was on fire.
There were five other passengers in the lift. All of a sudden the lift stopped. Although they didn’t know what had happened outside, they had only 100 minutes to get out of the building before it would fall into the dust.
Soon smoke began coming into the lift. The men knew that something was wrong. They tried to open the door but found a wall in front of them. The wall had the number 15 on it and they knew they were on the 15th floor. But their lift usually didn’t stop there, so there was no opening for them to escape. Jan decided they would have to make their own.
Knowing that the wall was made of a material that could be cut through, Jan took out his window cleaning tools, and began knocking a hole through the wall. When he felt tired, others helped.
Starting with one small hole, they cut through the three-inch-thick wall. Then they kicked hard at the wall. The wall cracked apart. They saw before them a tile (瓷磚) wall! Refusing to give up, they knocked a hole through the tile, then made the opening big enough to get through. 【題目】任務(wù)型閱讀
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)短文中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一詞)
What is a hurricane(颶風(fēng))?
You may already know that hurricanes are storms. They can cause terrible waves, wind, and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season”, which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean(大西洋)and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean(太平洋).
Kinds of Hurricanes
There are five kinds of hurricanes, which are based on wind speeds. It helps people know how much damage(危害)a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed is, the more dangerous the storm is. For example, a kind of hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely.
Hurricane dangers
When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a terrible flood. The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerous strong winds, the eye is actually(事實上)a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
Hurricane safety tips
There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction, so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety tips.
Be sure you have a radio, batteries, fresh drinking water, and enough food.
Tell neighbours, friends, and family members your emergency plans. Tell them where you’ll go if you need to leave your home.
If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay with a friend or a family member, in a hotel/motel, or in an emergency shelter area.
Stay inside during the storm. You could be badly injured(受傷)if you go outside.
