【題目】Katy's Book Report

It was Monday afternoon. Pointing to the blackboard, Mr. Hayes reminded, his students, "You should hand in your book report next Monday."

Katy said in a low voice, "I haven't started yet."

Tom looked surprised, "I've already finished reading mine."

"We still have a whole week," Katy said,"There's plenty of time. I will start reading it tonight right after the soccer practice.”

But Katy was too tired to read after the soccer practice. "I'll start the book tomorrow," she told herself.

Tuesday came. Katy watched TV for a few hours, and then worked on her coin collection until bedtime. "It's too late to read now," Katy decided. "Tomorrow, I'll start it for sure."

On Wednesday, Tom warned her not to leave things until the last minute. "It's not the last minute," Katy told him. "I still have four whole days left.”

Unfortunately, she had to clean up her messy room first. Then, she was too tired to read. So Katy put off starting her book until Thursday.

Katy finally began reading her book on Thursday. It was so hard that she had read only a few pages by bedtime.

On Friday night, Katy gave up watching her favorite video, for she had to read her book. Then on Saturday morning, she went on reading it.

"At least I have the whole weekend," she thought. However, she forgot her soccer game! So she lost several hours to read, which made her even more worried.

Katy read for the rest of Saturday, and she thought to herself, "I wish I'd started it earlier, like Tom!"

Katy finally finished reading her book on Sunday morning and stayed up writing her book report until, midnight.

She looked tired and nervous, thinking to herself, "I think this project has taught me an important lesson."

The Oxford English Dictionary turns 90 this year. The big, fat book is a good friend of your English learning.

But do you know the story of how the famous dictionary was created over a period of 71 years?

The very first edition of the Dictionary started to be developed as an idea in the late 1850s when a group of English language experts (專家) felt the need for such an English dictionary. They wanted a dictionary which would tell the history of each word in the language, based on data (數(shù)據(jù)) showing how each word was actually used at different periods in history. This data collection was done through a London association called the Philological Society in1857.

In 1879, Oxford University Press made preparations for publishing the Dictionary, James Murray was appointed as the new editor(編輯). Murray had never been to university. He was a self-taught language expert. However, he took on a group of helpers, and the work of adding entries(條目) to the Dictionary soon got started Henry Bradley, one of Murray's helpers, was appointed as the Dictionary's second Editor in 1887. Bradley was given the task of editing a separate part of the alphabet (字母表)starting with the letter E. But as time passed, they were fully aware that not even two separate teams were enough. In 1901, William Craigie was appointed as the Dictionary's third Editor, and in 1914 Charles Onions became its fourth Editor. By the time Onions was appointed, the Dictionary was complete as far as the letter S.

It's important to note that the Dictionary didn't finish at Z. It was the letter W that was the last to be finished on April 19, 1928. That was the day on which the first edition of the Dictionary was officially completed.

As I got older, we didn't play catch as much. If I had a problem and would go to my father to ask for his advice, he would try to joke with me and say "Keep your eye on the ball". We would both laugh becauseusually that advice was not useful to the problem, but he would try to make me smile.

During one of our last conversations, I was telling him about a problem I was having with my boyfriend. Once again, I could read his lips "Keep your eye on the ball." We both smiled.
