There was a lovely vegetable patch (菜園). A large tree grew there. Both the patch and the tree gave the place a wonderful look, and they were the pride of the gardener. But no one knew that the vegetables and the tree couldn’t stand each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow (陰影), because it left them only just enough light to live. The tree, on the other hand, hated the vegetables because they drank nearly all the water, leaving him just enough to live.
The situation became so serious that the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would die. The tree answered back by not protecting the vegetables from the hot sun, so they began to dry up. Soon the vegetables were really weak, and the tree was drying up.
The gardener wondered why and stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables realized that it was better to help each other. They learned how to live in harmony with those around them. So they decided to work together, using both the shade and the water to grow well. After seeing how well they were doing, the gardener gave the best care to his vegetable patch, watering and fertilizing (施肥) it better than any other patch for miles around.

As my friend was passing some elephants,he suddenly stopped. He was confused by the fact that these huge animals were being held by nothing but a small rope. The rope was tied to their front legs. It was that the elephants could break away from the ropes at any time. But for some ,they did not.
My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these elephants just stood there and didn't to get away.
“Well,” he said,“when they are very and much smaller,we use the same size rope to tie them.At that age,it's enough to hold them.As they grow up,they are used to that they cannot break away. They believe the rope can hold them,so they never try to break free.”
My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free, because they believed they couldn't,they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we at it once before? How many of us are being held back by old, outdated that no longer serve us?

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand. Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)deeply into both families.

Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off from our work to act as guides to our friends: It is opposite in America, Americans can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.
Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.
Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.
Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.
One of the processes growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

A.one | B.two | C.three | D.none |
A.Streetlight and car lights | B.Wild animals and enemies |
C.Moving curtains and wind | D.Clothes and walls |
A.walk away without others |
B.take a bus by herself |
C.follow others closely |
D.make sure not to take a wrong bus |
A.She thought being popular among people was important. |
B.She was always the leader of the others. |
C.She always got poor grades. |
D.She was not liked by others at all. |
