Lewis Carrol is one of the most famous writers for children of all time. He is the author of the children’s classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Lewis Carrol was born on January 27, 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was the oldest boy in a family of eleven children. As a child, he did well in mathematics and won many prizes. He also created games for himself and his brothers and sisters.

Lewis Carrol studied at Richmond School (1844-1845) and Rugby School (1846-1850). In 1850, he started studying at Christ Church, Oxford. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher of mathematics at Oxford. Apart from teaching mathematics, he also took photos and wrote essays and poems.

Lewis Carrol loved children. He became friends with the children of Henry George Liddel, Alice and her sisters Lorina and Edith. The three little girls often visited the young mathematics teacher in his college rooms. They spent many hours with Carrol, sitting on his couch while he told them fantastic stories about dream worlds. He also drew pictures for these stories.

During an afternoon picnic in 1864, Dodgson told the Liddel children a story of Alice’s Adventures Underground. Alice liked it very much and when they returned home, she asked him to write it down for her. He fulfilled the little girl’s wish and wrote the story down. He illustrated (配圖) it with his own drawings and gave it to Alice.

One day, the story fell into the hands of the novelist Henry Kingsley. He read it and told Carrol that he should publish it. The book was published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. It became very successful. Carrol wrote some more stories and in 1871 published Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There.

Lewis Carrol died on January 14, 1898. By the time of his death, Alice had become the most popular children’s book in England, and by 1932 it was one of the most popular children’s books in the world.

根據(jù)“After finishing his studies, he became a teacher of mathematics at Oxford.”

根據(jù)“As a child, he did well in mathematics and won many prizes. He also created games for himself and his brothers and sisters. ”可知,小時候,他的數(shù)學(xué)很好,還得過很多獎。 他也為自己和他的兄弟姐妹創(chuàng)造了游戲。由此可知,劉易斯很聰明。故選C。

3詞義猜測題。praised贊揚(yáng);satisfied滿足;changed改變;regretted后悔。根據(jù)“she asked him to write it down for her”“He illustrated (配圖) it with his own drawings and gave it to Alice.”

根據(jù)第四段“He became friends with the children of Henry George Liddel, Alice and her sisters Lorina and Edith.”可知,劉易斯與三個小孩成了好朋友,所以a排第一;根據(jù)第五段開頭“Dodgson told the Liddel children a story of Alice’s Adventures Underground”可知,劉易斯給孩子們講了《愛麗絲漫游奇境》這則故事,所以d排第二;根據(jù)第五段He fulfilled the little girl’s wish and wrote the story down.可知,劉易斯?jié)M足了小女孩的愿望,并寫下了《愛麗絲漫游奇境》這則故事,所以b排第三;根據(jù)第六段“He read it and told Carrol that he should publish it.”可知,在讀了劉易斯的故事以后,亨利·金斯利鼓勵劉易斯出版這個故事,所以c排第四;根據(jù)最后一段“By the time of his death, Alice had become the most popular children’s book in England, and by 1932 it was one of the most popular children’s books in the world.” 故選A。

根據(jù)文章第一段“Lewis Carrol is one of the most famous writers for children of all time. He is the author of the children’s classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.”

How will the Internet change the world? Will we enjoy a smarter life in the future? Many of the world’s biggest Internet companies took part in an important meeting. They talked about how to build a future for our online world. The Internet can make our lives easier in many ways. The companies at the meeting showed us some of their latest technology. Here are some examples. Let's take a look.

Lip reading Machines can not only read faces. They can also read your lip movements. The Chinese Internet company Sogou has made lip reading technology. You don’t need to speak aloud. The machine turns your lip movements into voice or text. This could be very useful if you are in a noisy place and people cannot hear you on your phone. Police can also use this technology. Sometimes they see criminals on city-monitoring cameras, but they don’t know what they say. The lip reading technology can help people with this.

Smart shoes Your feet might hurt if your shoes do not fit you. This won’t happen if you wear “smart” custom-made shoes. The Xiemofang company brought a machine to the meeting. The machine scans(掃描) your feet. It records 39 parts of your feet. It even records how long each toe is. It also has a database. The database has more than 10, 000 kinds of shoes. You can choose the color and style. It also gives you suggestions for your choices. The suggestions are based on records of other people’s feet. You can get your new shoes after 10 days.

Unmanned supermarkets You walk into a supermarket, pick out your goods and go to check out. But there is no worker. There is just a tablet that says “Please smile” When you smile, it gives you a discount. Your money goes from your Alipay account to the supermarket. You don't need to do anything. The Alibaba company has made this supermarket. When you go into the supermarket, it knows your face and your Alipay account. It also knows your facial expressions. So it knows how much you like your goods. The supermarket not only makes shopping easier. It also understands you.
