Ladies and gentlemen, I returned to this year in a time machine. In the year 2500, we are able to travel through time to any year in the history of the earth. This year is your last chance to change your lifestyle to save the earth.
Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth’s water and air, but most people did not change their way of life. Instead, they continued to pour dangerous chemicals and other waste into lakes and seas, to drive more and more cars and trucks, and to cut down trees.
By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted. People could no longer drink water, and they had to use other types of liquids.
So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce. There was no water to grow food and all of the fish in the lakes and seas died because of the pollution. Terrible wars broke out between the rich and the poor. Scientists were working very hard to find another planet in space where humans could live.
By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth. Where did we go? Nowhere. The scientists did not find another safe planet, so now we must travel around the universe in our spaceships. We are still looking for a place to call our home.
So, it is up to change history. There is still hope. You must change your lifestyle now, before it is too late.

根據(jù)本句內(nèi)容“So by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce.” 再加上下一句“There was no water to grow food”,可知食物應(yīng)該是不夠人類吃的,可知,“scarce”是“缺少的”意思,故答案為B。
根據(jù)短文第二段“a few people were worried about polluting the earth's water and air, but most people did not change their way of life.”
根據(jù)短文第四段“By the year 2400, the air was too polluted for humans to breathe. So we had to leave the earth.
根據(jù)短文第二段“Beginning in the middle of the 20th century, a few people were worried about polluting the earth's water and air, but most people did not change their way of life.” A是對的。根據(jù)文中“By the year 2200, the earth’s water was completely polluted” 到2200年,地球上的水被完全污染了?芍,B. There wasn’t enough food for people to eat by the year 2200.是錯誤的;根據(jù)文中“So, by the year 2300, there were so many people that food became scarce.” C. All the animals died because of pollution by the year 2300.

I grew up in a very poor common family. My father used some unusual ways to teach me. The following is the one I value most.
On the first day of 2nd grade, my father asked me if I could read well. “Yes, I can,” I said. So he gave me a map with street names and directions on how to walk to school. My school is 3 miles away, and I had never been off my home street by myself, ever.
My father said, “Lily, everything you need to know is written on the map, read the map and follow the directions.” My father kissed me goodbye and sent me out the door. I was afraid. How could I walk to school alone? On my way to school, I cried as I walked.
I don’t know how long it took me to get to school, but I do remember how I felt when I came around the last street corner, and saw my school. I jumped up and down. I wished I could tell my father that I made it.
My father wasn’t there when I got home and I was asleep when he got home. The next day I waited for him to ask what had happened. He never did. Years later, I asked him why he did that and why he didn’t care what had happened. He just looked at me for a while and then said, “I didn’t have to ask you, because I knew. I followed you all the way. I saw you jump up and down at the last street corner. I felt what you felt.” Then I understood and cried.
