It was about nine o’clock in the morning. I was on my way to the office. Suddenly,I saw a small yellow car coming very fast. When the red light was on,the driver wanted to stop but she could not. The car hit the wall of a building, and the driver was badly hurt. I quickly took out my cellphone and called the police. A police car came soon. A policeman helped the driver out of the car,and took her to the hospital. Another policeman came up to me and asked me about the accident. I hoped the driver would be better soon and be more careful when driving.

Drivers in New York City will have to drive more slowly. The city has introduced a new speed limit of 25 mph ( about 40 kph) . Do you know the old limit? Well, let me tell you. It was 30 mph (about 48 kph) . The new law will apply to about 90 percent of the city's streets.
The city's Department of Transportation hopes the lower speed limit will make people drive more carefully and reduce traffic accidents and deaths. The city's mayor is Bill de Blasio. He wanted to improve traffic safety and end pedestrian (行人) deaths. He said ," There's a real consensus (共識) in this town that we need to have people drive more carefully, more safely and slower for the protection of our kids and seniors."
Road speed limits are set in many countries. The speed limits are used to set the maximum speed for cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, etc. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that around 1. 24 million people die each year in traffic accidents. This number can fall if people drive more slowly.
About the new speed limit, different people have different ideas. Most people say that it is a good traffic rule. They promise to obey the new rule. In their mind, the new rule can reduce traffic accidents and deaths. But not all the people agree to the rule. There are some other people who have the opposite view. They say the limit will make drivers angry and increase accidents.

We often praise science.
It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能) . This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that can think like humans.
However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology.
" The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.
Hawking is a well-known British physicist and author of the best-selling science book — A Brief History of Time. This warning came after commenting on the technology he uses to speak with. As Hawking suffers from a serious disease called ALS,he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.
This is a basic type of AI,which is very useful, yet Hawking fears the possibility of creatjng machines that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it's easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films display big machines that are far cleverer than us. " Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution (進(jìn)化) ,couldn’t compete," said Hawking.
But not every scientist is pessimistic (悲觀的) about AI technology. ” I believe we will remain in charge of the technology for a long time”1 said Rollo Carpenter, the creator of Cleverbot in the UK,which is a software program that remembers past conversations. "The potential" of it to solve many of the world problems will be realized."
41. The best-selling science book A Brief History of Time explains the world.
42. Hawking is a great scientist who works for the BBC.
43. Hawking is pessimistic about AI technology.
44. Hawking needs an AI computer to communicate because it's useful.
45. AI is an area where scientists are working on creating machines which can think like humans.
