Da Vinci, Leonardo

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-519) was an Italian painter, inventor, musician, engineer and scientist.

Da Vinci was born in the countryside. From an early age, he showed great intelligence and artistic ability. As he grew older, he learnt to do many different things. His paintings are very famous, and one, the Mona Lisa, is perhaps the most famous painting in the world. He also had many inventions. For example, his notebooks include some interesting drawings of flying machines. (See Art)

Dinosaurs lived on Earth more than 60 million years before human beings. They lived everywhere on Earth. Some dinosaurs were as small as chickens. Others were as big as ten elephants. Some could even fly.

Many dinosaurs ate plants. However, some dinosaurs liked to eat meat.

Dinosaurs live on Earth for more than 150 million years. That suddenly they all died out. Nobody knows why. However, we can lean about them from their fossils. (See Earth history)

【題目】 Instead of gobbling(狼吞虎咽) your food, try eating more slowly. It may help you drop those unwanted pounds. The conclusion is from a new study by Chinese researcher.

The study showed that compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese(肥胖的). But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to obese. In addition, people who ate slowly tended (往往會) to be healthier and have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed. “However, this study could not prove that speed eating causes or stops obesity,” the researcher noted.

“Slow eating has its advantages and a few disadvantages ,” said Samantha Heller from New York City. “On the one hand, slow eating gives our body time to register a sense of satisfaction and fullness, so we eat less. We are more likely to enjoy a taste of food. On the other hand, the longer people sit in front of food, the more food they will eat, ”she said.

“Speed eating appears to be far more harmful. People who eat quickly, as many of us do, gobble far more food than they need. In many European countries, slow eating is a way of life,” Heller said. In America, speed eating takes the lead. Thus we need to encourage people to have a change, learn the way of slower eating from Europeans and get a true enjoyment of food.

1The researchers who found eating slowly may help you drop pounds come from ______.

A.America.B.Japan.C.China.D.Europe.

2Who is the least likely to be obese according to the second paragraph?

A.Speed eating is harmful to us.

4The underlined word “register” probably means ______ in Chinese.

A.注冊B.意識到C.抵制住D.缺乏

5This passage mainly talks about _______.

A.the disadvantages of being obeseB.The ways of avoiding being obese.

C.the ways of eating slowlyD.why we should try eating more slowly

【題目】 When I was in college, a white cat liked to show up on our campus at times. It was clear that he was a stray (流浪的) cat because he looked thin and weak. Students would play with him after class and feed him all kinds of food. The school didn’t say anything about the cat for a long time.

But one day, we were told that one of the students had an infectious (傳染性的) disease. and that the cat was possibly the source(起源). After that, we were not allowed to touch any stray animals on campus. The school started to make efforts to keep animals off campus as well.

Since we were not allowed to feed the white cat, it was hard for him to find food on the street. He became weak and skinny. But while the rest of us ignored (忽視) the cat, a security guard (保安) at our school decided to take on the responsibility of caring for him. He took the cat to an animal hospital for a health check. He then went to a nearby supermarket and bought food for the cat, as well as a small bed for him to sleep in. He made sure the cat was healthy and comfortable.

It might seem like a small effort to some people. But this man risked his job – his only source of income just to feed a tiny cat who no one else cared for. It was a very heartwarming thing to see.

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,回答下列問題。

1When did the students play with the white cat?

2Who had an infectious disease?

3How was the cat when it was hard for him to find food?

4Where was the cat taken to before he got the food and the bed?

5What did the writer think of the security guard’s behavior about the stray cat?
