19.Men and women are still treated unequally in the workplace.Women continue to earn less,on average,for the same performance,and they remain underrepresented in top jobs.Research has shown that both conscious and subconscious biases (偏見) contribute to this problem.But we've discovered another,subtler source of inequality:Women often don't get what they want and deserve because they don't ask for it.In three separate studies,we found that men are more likely than women to negotiate for what they want.This can be costly for companies-and it requires management intervention.
The first study found that the starting salaries of male MBAs who had recently graduated from Carnegie Mellon were 7.6%,or almost 4,000dollars,higher on average than those of female MBAs from the same program. That's because most of the women had simply accepted the employer's initial salary offer; in fact, only 7% had attempted to negotiate. But 57% of their male counterparts-or eight times as many men as women-had asked for more.
Another study tested this gender difference in the lab.Subjects were told that they would be observed playing a word game and that they would be paid between 3dollars and 10dollars for playing. After each subject completed the task,an experimenter thanked the participant and said,"Here's 3dollars.Is 3dollars OK?"For the men,it was not OK,and they said so.Their requests for more money exceeded the women's by nine to one.
The largest of the three studies surveyed several hundred people over the Internet, asking respondents about the most recent negotiations they'd attempted or initiated and when they expected to negotiate next. The study showed that men place themselves in negotiation situations much more often than women do and regard more of their interactions as potential negotiations.
There are several reasons accounting for the phenomenon.First, women often are socialized from an early age not to promote their own interests and to focus instead on the needs of others. The messages girls receive-from parents, teachers, other children, the media, and society in general-can be so powerful that when they grow up they may not realize that they've internalized this behavior,or they may realize it but not understand how it affects their willingness to negotiate.Women tend to assume that they will be recognized and rewarded for working hard and doing a good job.Unlike men, they haven't been taught that they can ask for more.

72.According to this passage, what causes the inequality in the workplace?D
A.social bias
B.women's poorer working ability
C.women's worse academic background
D.women's less negotiating
73.Which can be the result of the following survey,according to Para 4?When do you expect to negotiate next?A

74.Which of the following statements is not true?D
A.Women accept the employer's initial salary offer willingly.
B.Men tend to ask for more money than woman.
C.Women care more about other's interest instead of themselves'.
D.Men believe that the better they work, the better they're paid.
75.What will be discussed in the following paragraph?C
A.The suggestions given to women.
B.The warnings to men.
C.Another reason for women's not asking.

根據(jù)文章第一段we've discovered another source of inequality:…because they don't ask for it.以及we found that men are more likely than women to negotiate for what they want.可知婦女受到不平等待遇的原因之一是因為她們不去提出要求,不去協(xié)商,故答案選D.
73     A   細節(jié)理解題.根據(jù)文章第四段末句The study showed that men place themselves in negotiation situations much more often than women do.
Unlike men,they haven't been taught that they can ask for more.
There are several reasons accounting for the phenomenon.First….

11.People with an impulsive personality refer to those who tend to do things without considering the possible dangers or problems first.According to a new study by researchers at the University of Georgia,such people may be more likely to have food addiction.The study found that people exhibiting impulsive behavior weren't necessarily overweight,but impulsiveness was related to a direct relationship with food,and therefore,less healthy weight.
Food addiction has been compared to addictive drug use.Studies have linked the dopamine (多巴胺) release that occurs after tasting delicious food to the dopamine release that happens when people consume other addictive substances.
Impulsive behavior involves several personality traits (特點).Two of these traits,known as negative urgency and lack of perseverance,were particularly associated with food addiction and high BMI (身體質(zhì)量指數(shù)) during the study.
Negative urgency is characterized by the tendency to behave impulsively when experiencing negative emotions.Some people might drink alcohol or take drugs.For others,it could mean eating to feel better.Lack of perseverance is when a person has a hard time finishing hard or boring tasks.People with a lack of perseverance might have difficulty attempting to change addictive eating behavior,which could also cause obesity.
"Impulsiveness might be one reason why some people eat in an addictive way despite motivation to lose weight,"said Dr.Ashley Gearhardt,a clinical psychologist.He was involved in developing the Yale Food Addiction Scale in aid of those people."We are theorizing that if food addiction is really a thing,then our measure,the Yale Food Addiction Scale,should be related to helping control impulsive action,"said Gearhardt.
Clinical psychologist Dr.James MacKillop,whose lab was conducting the study,believes that therapies used to treat addictive drug behavior could help people who suffer from addictive eating habits.
"Most of the programs for weight loss at this point focus on the most obvious things,which are clearly diet and exercise,"MacKillop said."It seems that managing strong desires to eat would naturally fit in with the skills a person would need to eat healthily."

32.According to Paragraph 1,the result of food addiction isA.
A.less healthy weight
B.motivation to lose weight
C.negative emotions
D.taking alcohol or drugs
33.How does the author introduce the two personality traits in Paragraph 4?D
A.By making comparisons and conclusions.
B.By explaining causes and effects.
C.By presenting questions and answers.
D.By giving definitions and examples.
34.What can be inferred about the Yale Food Addiction Scale from the text?B
A.It has been successfully carried out among overweight people.
B.It might help some impulsive people with food addiction to lose weight.
C.It will prove whether food addiction is a problem to impulsive people.
D.It is theoretically a proper treatment for addictive food and drug behavior.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?C
A.Dopamine release caused by food addiction
B.Food addiction compared to drug use
C.Impulsive personality linked to food addition
D.Food addiction contributing to obesity.

12.A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly.The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems.Designed to do what a fly does naturally,the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly.Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
"It's extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components(元件),"said Robert Wood,the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade.A few years ago,his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components."The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,"he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly."The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components,each of which individually has to perform well,but then has to be matched well to everything it's connected to,"said Wood.The flight device was built into a set of power,computation,sensing and control systems.Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small,off-board power source,the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source,so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites,in farmers'fields or on the battlefield."Basically it should be able to take off,land and fly around,"he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale.Yet,the power,sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications."You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions,you know,to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals,but using these robots instead,"he said."So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis."
28.The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was thatC.
A.they had no model in their mind
B.they did not have sufficient time
C.they had no ready-made components
D.they could not assemble the components
29.It can be inferred from paragraphs 3and 4that the robotic flyB.
A.consists of a flight device and a control system
B.can just fly in limited areas at the present time
C.can collect information from many sources
D.has been put into wide application
30.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?D
A.The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.
B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.

4.For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been thechurch and the pub.Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, where the people gather together to socialize and exchange news.
As a result,British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historicsites. The most famous example is the pub in the city of Nottingham called"The Old Trip to Jerusa-lem".which dates hack to the year 1189 AD and is probably the oldest pub in England.
However,British pubs are not just for kings and queens; they welcome people from all classesand parts of society. On a cold night, the pub's landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price.
That's how things used to be.Things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit crunch(信貸緊縮 ) is causing 39 British pubs a week to go out of business.People do not have enough spare money to spend on beer.Recently, the UK government banned (禁止) smoking in all pubs, and that  may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.
This decline(衰退) is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 p.m.Previously,with 11 p.m.a(chǎn)s closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as"binge drinking",and it causes long-term health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities.
In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market.British pubs now offer something for everyone.A lot of pubs used to be"Working Men's Clubs",meaning that women could not usually enter.Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems.Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.
64.The passage mainly tells us something aboutC
A.the long history of British pubs
B:the decline of British pubs
C.the past and present of British pubs
D.the importance of British pubs
65.Which may not be the cause of the decline of British pubs?B
A.The credit crunch.
B.The present closing time.
C.The ban of smoking.
D.Having no spare money.
66.We can infer from the passage thatD.
A.binge drinking means drinking less beer
B.British people used to like drinking slowly
C.closing the pubs early will reduce social problems
D.British government aims to discourage people from binge drinking
67.We can see from the last paragraph that the authorA
A.holds an optimistic attitude towards the British pubs
B.is against the admission of too many women to the pulbs
C.thinks that women in the pubs will cause less social problems
D.thinks that British pubs should offer everything you need.

11.When e-mail first came into general use about twenty years ago,there was a lot of talk about the arrival of the paperless office.However,it seems that e-mail has yet to revolutionize office   communication.According to communications analyst Richard Metcalf,some offices have actually    seen an increase in paper as a result of e-mail."Information in the form of e-mal messages now floods our computer screens.These messages can be sent so quickly that memos(備忘錄) tend to be distributed in the hundreds.For those secretaries whose bosses ask them to print out all their e-mails and leave them in their in-trays,this means using up a great deal of paper every month,"Metcalf says.
Metcalf has found that because some e-mails get lost in cyberspace,important documents are     increasingly likely to be asked by clients(客戶)and colleagues to send all important documents both     by e-mail and by fax or"snail mail"-through the post.This highlights a further potential problem        with e-mail in today's offices-it is taking up time rather than saving it."With e-mail,communication is much easier,but there is also more room for misunderstandings,"says psychologist Dr David Lewis.Generally,much less care is taken with e-mails than with letters or faxes and the sender will probably print the document and reread it before putting it in an envelope or sending it by fax.
More worrying is still the increasing misuse of e mail for sending"flame-mail"-abusive or inappropriate e-mail messages,Recent research in several companies suggests that aggressive  communications like this are on the increase.E-mail has become the perfect medium for expressing  workplace dissatisfaction because it is so instant.
E-mail can also be a problem in other ways.Staffs all too often make the mistake of thinking that the contents fan e-mail,like things said over the phone,are private and not permanent.But it is not only possible for an employer to read all your e-mails,it is also perfectly legal.E-mail messages can be traced back to their origin for a period of at least two years,so you might want to rethink e-mailing your dissatisfaction about your too to your friends.The advice is to keep personal e-mails out of the office.
It goes without saying that e-mail exists to make Jife easier,and if used correctly,it is an invaluable tool for businesses of all sizes.But perhaps,for the time being,the fact that in the business world 70percent offal documents are still in paper form is not such a bad thing after all.

60.Why has the promise of the paperless office not come true in many offices?D
A.People write more memos than they used to.
B.Staff leave messages lying around their offices.
C.Many managers prefer to read their messages on paper.
D.Many secretaries keep paper copies of their bosses'e-mails.

B.It increases the amount of paperwork done in offices.
C.It is not popular with many secretaries.
D.It is a less efficient channel than fax.
62.Why should employees not use company e-mail systems for personal messages?B
A.Because company e-mail systems are not easy to use.
B.Because e-mail is not a private means ofcommunication.
C,Because they allow people to express their anger immediately.
D,Because the people the messages are sent to can't respond immediately.
63.What does the writer conclude about e-mail in the last paragraph?C

B.It is not being used enough in business today.
C.It is really useful when people use it properly.
D.It will never replace written communication.

8.There are always minorities,either people or enterprises,that have absolute advantage(絕對優(yōu)勢)in a field; the majority apply their comparative advantage(相對優(yōu)勢) to professions where they do their best to be effective players.Based on comparative advantage,different divisions are formed as international trade and the globalized economy develop.
Oranges are flourishing in Florida in the United States,for example,shoes are made perfectly in Wenzhou of China,and people in both areas need oranges and shoes.In Wenzhou,one could try to create an artificial environment for orange trees of an international standard,and in Florida workers could be trained to make shoes as effectively as workers in Wenzhou using the same resources.However,the costs would be too high.The best solution,therefore,is to allow each location to specialize in its own product,producing enough to meet local needs and exporting the rest.As a result,people in both areas end up with lower cost and higher quality goods than if each tried to produce both.It is obvious that absolute advantage occurs in this process.
However,absolute advantage may not necessarily apply everywhere.For instance,I know a capable company boss,who is also an expert in private cars and very skillful at changing car oil,even more efficiently than a mechanic,But,almost every time he drives his car to a garage to have the oil changed by a mechanic since he believes he can use the time to do something more valuable.What he uses here is his comparative advantage rather than absolute advantage.
The same theory may also apply to individual careers.You may not be the best in a certain area,but still have a comparative advantage,which will not be reduced in relation to others'absolute advantage,and you can still find an advantaged position in which your disadvantage is smaller relative to others.
An ordinary talent can,therefore,achieve outstanding results by rightfully exploring his or her comparative advantage.In this sense,we may say that comparative advantage really works.

72.From the example about orange in Florida and shoes in Wenzhou,we can draw the conclusion thatC.
A.the field in Wenzhou can be improved to grow oranges.
B.Florida workers could be trained to make shoes.
C.we should fully use our absolute advantage in our advantaged field.
D.our comparative advantage is equal to our absolute one as to making fortunes.
73.Why doesn't the capable company boss change his car oil himself?C
A.The mechanic is more efficient than him.
B.He needn't do it by himself for his riches..
C.He would rather do something more valuable.
D.Changing oil is beyond his ability.
74.Which of the following is right according to paragraph 4.?D
A.You should use your absolute advantage in your work definitely.
B.You must work hard to improve your absolute advantage to be the best worker.
C.If other's absolute advantage is larger,your comparative advantage is smaller.
D.Sometimes you may still use your comparative advantage to find your advantaged position.
75.This article can be entitled"A".
A.The Advantage of Comparative Advantage.
B.The Advantage of Absolute Advantage
C.Absolute Advantage-the secret to make different talents
D.Comparative Advantage-the way to achieve outstanding results.
