Are supermarkets designed to persuade us to buy more? When you enter a supermarket, the manager knows         than you do how you will behave — which        you will walk, where you will        , what will make you      one product rather than another. When customers go into a shop, they      look to their left       move  towards the right. So supermarket entrances are usually on the left of the building, and the arrangement is to take shoppers       the store ,aisle after aisle, from left to right. Then shoppers will pay attention to all the      .
Fresh fruit and        are displayed near supermarket entrances. This gives the        that only healthy food is sold in the shop.       foods that everyone buys, like sugar and tea are put near each other. They are kept in different aisles so customers are taken past other attractive foods        they find what they want. In this way, shoppers are      to buy products that they do not really       .
People walk quickly through      aisles, but they move more slowly in wide aisles and give more attention to the products. One best-selling       for products is at the end of aisles, because shoppers        to turn into the next aisles.
Sweets are often placed at children’s        level at the checkout. While parents are waiting to pay, children        the sweets and put them in the trolley.
Customers buy more when shelves are      than when they are half empty because they feel there is something wrong with those products that are there.

A新鮮的B重要的C迅速的D基本的;通過下文的like sugar and tea可知糖和茶之類的產(chǎn)品都是人們生活必需的基本日用品。故D正確。
小題12:C 連詞辨析。A當(dāng)…時(shí);B除非,如果…不…;C在…前;D直到…才;在他們買到自己想要的東西之前超市里的這些安排都在暗暗地帶領(lǐng)著顧客逛著超市。故C正確。
小題13:B 短語(yǔ)辨析。Be encouraged to do sth被鼓勵(lì)做某事;在商店里,顧客都是被鼓勵(lì)著購(gòu)買自己實(shí)際上并不需要的東西。
根據(jù)they move more slowly in wide aisles可知上下文之間存在著對(duì)比關(guān)系,這里使用narrow與wide相對(duì)應(yīng)。

Friendships can be difficult — because often people aren't as honest and open as they should be. Sometimes, people finally get hurt.
Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature. A person is put together in order to take care of themselves and their own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people. Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with, it is something that everyone should be against.
The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friends the same way that you'd like to be treated(對(duì)待). This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friends everything you would want to be given in a friendship. Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend, it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you, if he or she was in your shoes.
Even if you're always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are problems that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these problems so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships. Problems like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends, or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behind are problems that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these friend problems so that you can keep your friends and make new ones. No one wants to have a broken friendship.

Father’s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother’s Day. And just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. Father’s Day has become important in North America. And shopkeepers found it was a good way to get people to buy presents for their fathers, presents from their shops.

When I wake up on summer mornings, I know I am going to my favorite place to volunteer and make a difference in someone's life just by being with him or her -- a summer school for autistic (患孤獨(dú)癥的)children.
By helping the kids read or do math, I am not only teaching important skills but also helping them feel like any other kid. There are many wrong ideas about autism. The kids I work with can think and feel. They need help only in certain areas.
Of course, each kid is special. For example, some kids like to draw, and others like to sing.
At the school, the kids learn through about 20 activities. These activities can help them learn skills they will need later in life.
The very first day I volunteered, a boy came up to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and said “Hello”. From then on, I knew I could make a difference.
Another boy loved to have me read books that can help him learn to read. Sometimes he could be encouraged to read a few words or sentences. Finally, one day during reading practice, he read nearly 220 words himself!
Summer school is also a time for fun, Last summer, bagpipe(風(fēng)箱)players came to perform. Most of us had our hands over our ears because they were so loud. When they asked for a volunteer from the audience, one girl raised her hand as high as she could, got up on stage, and even tried the bagpipes in front of everyone.
Through these experiences, I realize that the challenges these kids face do not stop them from doing many amazing things. I'm teaching them, but they are teaching me more.

To some, it's a dream job---eating delicious meals for free and then writing about them. But for some food critics, their eyes aren't the only thing that gets wide with yet another feast.
Karen Fernau, a food writer for The Arisona Republic, said when she first started her job –she began to gain weight. “I always looked forward to lunch before this job, then all of a sudden lunch was all day every day. " she says. Nine years later, keeping her weight steady and her health intact (完好無(wú)損的)is a daily battle. If she knows she will be going to a tasting at a bakery or eating a four-course meal, she usually eats fruits or salads throughout the day. Now she is always keeping track of what's in the food she eats and she says most people don't even look at or consider it. At one tasting task alone, she says, upward of l,000 calories is often added to her day. That's about half of the recommended total calories per day for the average adult.
But even though she's thought of a special eating method, Fernau says sticking to it is a daily battle. And food editors, writers and critics across the country couldn't agree more. “When I'm at home or not eating for work, it's healthy food to the extreme," says Phil Vettel, who's been a restaurant critic for the Chicago Tribune for 19 years.
Vettle, who eats dinner at four restaurants each week, says unlike most professions, he has no right to choose. "If I'm going out to eat, I can't choose the healthiest thing on the menu, I have to eat when they're bringing me. " While Vettel exercises when he can, Joe Yonan, a food editor at The Washington Post, has strengthened his exercise habits since he started the job two years ago. Yonan says he realized early on that he was gaining weight and immediately hired a personal trainer to meet with three times a week, on top of his body training three to five times a week.
Still, it's a struggle that many Americans might envy. After all, it's one thing to get your calories from lobster(龍蝦) tails or a delicate(精致的)chocolate cookie and quite another to get them from sodas and fast-food burgers.

What’s in name? Well, apparently, our general happiness. Psychologists say that what we are called has a direct connection with our happiness.
Those called Judy and Joshua are the happiest, while Lynn or Ben is likely to be the unhappiest, according to research. Psychologist Dr David Holmes found that this can cause the association(聯(lián)想) that others make with the name. Hearing the name Judy may make them think of actress Judi Dench or TV presenter Judy Finnigan, and people who are considered good-natured and happy. On the other hand, people think Paulines are unhappy because of the character Pauline Fowler from the TV programme East Enders. The research claims that this association influences the person with the name and so their personality is shaped to fit in. Dr David Holmes said, “This also has some relation with the original meaning of the name, for example, the original meaning of Judy is ‘praised’.”
Certain names also work well in certain aspects of life. In the workplace Richard and Judy are the happiest, while those called Ruth and Carly are the happiest in relationships. At the other end of the scale the unhappiest workers are Stuart and Liz, with the unhappiest in relationships being Frank and Harriet.
Dr Holmes said, “The relation we have with certain names, particularly important namesakes (同名者), also shapes how we see ourselves and so may have an effect on our confidence. Names are like product brands in having a powerful effect on attitudes and should therefore be chosen with care.”
“Other names are connected with being brave, outgoing or serious. Therefore, many celebrities change their names to ones which reflect these characteristic. This, in turn, influences parents when they choose names for their babies,” said Dr Holmes, “while names connected with ordinary people are rarely chosen for their babies.”
小題1:What’s the main idea of this passage?
