“Do you like doing things for people?” I asked a friend.

“Yes, most of the time,” she replied.

“Most of the time?”

“Well, I love to do things that are unexpected. I like to do little things most people wouldn't think about doing,” she said.

“But why did you say most of the time?”

“Well, sometimes after doing those little things people take advantage of you. I mean, they expect you to do it again. They ask you to do it. That’s when I don’t like it.”

It was odd that I had this conversation. This just happened to me. I love to do little things. I will pay for a meal card for the people in the office every time we have a meeting there. Not a big thing. It’s a little thing. $5.30 will pay for almost five lunches. Hey, big spender!

I also bought a bag of animal crackers for a friend at work. She was having a tough day and not very happy at all. I drove down to the Wal-Mart and picked up a huge bag for under $2.00. Her smile was worth it.

But one week she said, “Bob, we ran out of crackers. We love them so much.” I didn't want to do it. I smiled and she persisted. I finally admitted, “It’s different when I do it because I want to, but now you are trying to make me go to get them. It’s not the same.” But I bought it for her.

Unfortunately, a big fire in my family took away all the possessions we had. I didn’t know what to do and how to do it. What happened to me then surprised me most. I once had my bike repaired, but the repairman said “no charge” on hearing my sufferings. A stranger called James Kennedy read some pieces I’d written about our sufferings for Slate, the online magazine, and wanted to give us a new house across the lake from New Orleans. I refused but I felt moved. Another poet at the University of Florida also wanted to let his house to me free of charge while he was on holiday. My mates gave us more money for us to rebuild my home. When you do something kind for others, do you always get rewarded? Yes, but not in the way you might expect.

While I was in my 4th month of pregnancy(妊娠期)with my second child,we were preparing for a trip to Louisiana, where Marshall’s family live,to celebrate Jane’s 2nd birthday. Two days before we were to leave,we got the shocking news that I was going to lose the baby. Not knowing when this would happen,we decided to continue with our trip.

Since Marshall’s family lives on a 600-acre cattle farm, you often find that you have a lot of time to yourself to think when you are there. That is precisely what I did not want to do at this time.I told Marshall that I needed to get a good book to get lost in while I was there.I told him I heard the Harry Potter books were good,so he went out and got the first one for me.

During that trip,I totally got lost in the book, which was of great help during a time when I needed a distraction to forget about the sadness. In the book,I noticed the name “Seamus”.I vaguely remembered it was pronounced “Shamus” and I liked the sound of that.I mentioned it to Marshall and he liked it too.Toward the end of the trip,I had just 5 chapters left and I knew I was about to finish the first book, which I was pretty excited about.

Soon after we put Jane down to bed,I had started labor(分娩),so I was unable to read. The labor lasted 5 and 1/2 hours, but Marshall stayed there with me,sitting beside me and reading aloud the last 5 chapters of Harry Potter.I can never fully explain how much that helped me through the experience. And ever since then,Marshall and I both have been fans of the Harry Potter books. We remember how they helped us get through that time of our lives.

We were sad to have lost the baby, but the name Seamus started our journey toward adoption. And we gave this name to our adopted son.Though our Seamus doesn’t have a drop of Irish blood in him,the name fits him perfectly.

1.Why did the writer want a good book during the trip?

A.Because the trip to Louisiana would take a long time.

B.Because she didn’t want to think of losing her baby.

C.Because she had nothing else to do except reading.

D.Because a good book could help her enjoy her trip.

2.According to the story,we can know that the Harry Potter books _________________.

A.made the family’s trip more exciting

B.include five books all together

C.have someone called Seamus in them

D.can help people deal with their problems

3.The writer named her son Seamus because ___________________.

A.she wanted to keep her trip in memory

B.she loved this name very much

C.her son doesn’t have Irish blood

D.it is a perfect name for a boy

4.Which is the best title for the passage?

A.Funny Stories of My Family

B.Seamus And Harry Potter

C.How We Got To Louisiana

D.How My Son Got His Name

Many songs, poems, and books have been written on love’s strong effect on people. The state of being in love has even been compared to being sick or mad. A study by Professor Semir Zeki of University College London has found that love does affect people’s brains by making them feel great.

Zeki studied young men and women who had recently fallen in love. He found that, when they were looking at photos of their loved ones, there was heightened activity in four areas of their brains. These areas deal with emotions, and one of them, in particular, is known to respond to drugs that cause feelings of great joy and excitement.

Interestingly, the study also found a lack of activity in two other areas of the brain when the volunteers looked at their lovers’ photographs. One of these areas is linked to feelings of sadness, while the other is often active in people suffering from depression. It seems love really can be uplifting.

The state of being in love, according to some scientists, may actually be good for your health. Although scientists know that being in love can make a person feel great, the exact influence of love on a person’s health is harder to determine. However, scientists say that people do need love in order to live healthy lives.

According to Dr. Thomas Lewis, people need to be in relationships because that is how we are designed. He says the brain can only maintain(保持) the overall stability of a person’s immune(免疫) system, bodily rhythms, and heart if it receives input(輸入) from outside the body in the form of emotional connections with others.

Professor Antonio Damasio has a similar view. He says that love enriches a person’s imagination and creativity, and makes a person’s body work better. He also believes that love can even improve the body’s ability to fight against disease. Damasio’s wise words of advice are “ Choose love and you will live longer.”

B. nobody but Professor Semir Zeki has found love does affect people’s brains

C. being in love sometimes may make someone act as if he/ she were mad

D. love causes heightened activity in all areas of a person’s brains

4.Which of the following statements is not true?

C. People are born to be in need of getting on touch with each other.

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently._ 1.

First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible.

2. The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.

Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated by limited understanding. 3.

Here is some of the advice I give my students:

●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.

●Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.

● Do not translate everything into your native language.

● 4. Don’t concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.

● Listen to something you enjoy.

I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 5. Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I did not pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

A. What should you do?

B. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.

C. But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all!

D. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!

E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.

F. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany.

G.Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.
