【題目】Sam, an unemployed man, said it was only the second thing he had ever won in his life. The first thing was a blanket at a church raffle(抽獎) when he was 25 years old. But this was much bigger: it was $120,000! He had won the Big Cube(骰子), a state lottery(彩票) game. To win, a contestant must first guess which number a spinning cube will stop on. The cube has six numbers on it: 1X, 10X, 50X, 100X, 500X, and 1000X. If he is correct, the contestant must then guess which of two selected variables(變量) is going to be greater. So, just guessing which number appears on the cube does not guarantee that you will win any money. Sam correctly guessed 1000X, but he still had to choose between two variables. One variable was the number of cars that would run the stop sign at Hill Street and Lake Avenue in six hours. The other variable was the number of times that a teenage boy would change TV channels in a three-hour period. This was a tough decision.

Finally, Sam flipped(翻轉(zhuǎn)) a coin. It came up heads, so Sam picked the teenager. He picked right. The stop sign was run only 76 times, but the teen clicked 120 times. Sixty-year-old Sam jumped for joy, for he had just won 1000 times 120, or $120,000. Sam dreamily left the lottery studio. Talking excitedly on his cell phone while crossing the street, he got hit by a little sports car.

Sam is slowly getting better. He was in the hospital for a month. His hospital bill was $110,000. And the insurance company for the little sports car's owner sued(起訴) Sam for $9,000 worth of repairs. Also, Sam still has to pay taxes on his winnings. Sam doesn't play the state lottery any more. He says it's better to be unlucky.

He says it's better to be unlucky.可知,Sam寧愿自己的運(yùn)氣不要那么好,說明他贏得彩票大獎是靠運(yùn)氣,故選A。

【3】D細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段His hospital bill was $110,000...sued(起訴) Sam for $9,000 worth of repairs可知,Sam贏得的12萬全部花在了醫(yī)藥費(fèi)和賠償上,除此之外,他還要支付所得稅,由此可知,Sam贏得的錢到了最后入不敷出,故選D。

【4】D俚語諺語題。A萬物皆有時,時來不可失;B收獲與風(fēng)險并存;C功夫不負(fù)有心人;D樂極必生悲。根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段Sam dreamily left the lottery studio. Talking excitedly on his cell phone while crossing the street, he got hit by a little sports car.可知,Sam一時間太激動了,以至于在過十字路口時被車撞了,說明了樂極生悲的道理,故選D。

【題目】As a child, I always thought about what the college admissions process would look like for me. I dreamed of the day when I’d get my first acceptance letter, and go on to learn as much as I could about many things as possible.

However, as I got older, my fears of going to college augmented. I’m a senior now, and the college admissions process isn’t exactly what I dreamt of when I was 7 years old. There are deadlines to meet, majors to choose, and how am I going to pay for all of this ? My mind plays tricks on me, convincing that my roommate will hate me and that my classes will be horribly boring and that each day will begin at five in the morning. To be honest, while I have many reasons to be excited for the next journey in my educational pursuits, I’m also scared to death.

I’ve invested hours upon hours studying for AP tests, SATs and ACTs. My peers and I sacrificed our Friday night football games, school dances and field trips to do better in studies in school. But is it all worth it ? What if the promise of college ends up being disappointing rather than a relief ?

In a year from now, my whole life will change. I’ll be a legal adult. My dorm might be in Paris, Los Angeles or Chicago. I’ll be doing my own laundry, cooking my own food and paying for things on my own. I’ll meet entirely new people and say goodbye to others. But isn’t that also the joy of life ? I want to experience joy, heartbreak, first times and new adventures.

College freaks me out, but you know what scares me more ? I must leave my life inside a comfort zone. It’s a big, bright and beautiful world, and I think it’s finally time for me to walk in it with the confidence at this time, I’ll be doing it right.

My friend Li Hua used to be rather poor in English, especially his terrible and strange pronunciation. Hardly could he make him understood when speaking English. Bearing a heavy load in mind, he felt desperate and upset. He dared not speak English at class. When asking questions, he was always nervous and embarrassed. The classmates always make fun of him, saying that he was speaking Japanese! Once I met him in the corridor. I told him that his pronunciation was very special and a kind of like Obama’s. Believing what I said, he got greatly inspired. He spared no effort to practice speak English every day. Now, he can speak English fluent with a perfect accent.

Recently, he told me that it wasn’t long after he knew that I just told a little white lie then but he appreciated badly, without which, he said, he couldn’t have achieved such great progresses.

【題目】Are you trying to learn a new language in a foreign land? You might be better off if you stopped looking at that picture of your family and friends.

New research from Columbia University found that prompting (提示) someone who is learning a new language with images and reminders of their own culture could temporarily ruin everything that the brain was trying to build.

When native Chinese students were asked to talk with a Caucasian avatar (白種人的虛擬頭像) and a Chinese avatar, their English skills were so different. Simply exposing students to a Chinese person affected their ability to speak English. Subjects who talked with the Chinese version felt more comfortable in their speech, but they produced 11% fewer words per minute. They actually became less fluent speakers.

To make sure it wasn’t just the avatar, researchers also showed people random images of China while the participants told a story. When pictures of their homeland appeared, fluency dropped 16% and volunteers were 85% more likely to use a literal (照字面的) translation, for example, calling pistachios “happy nuts”, because that’s literally what the Chinese word for pistachio means.

When the students were shown pictures of fish with one swimming ahead of the others, their culture would change how they look at the photo. With Chinese prompt, like photos of the Great Wall or Chinese Dragon, etc. they saw more students thinking that the fish was being chased, while an American prompt, like pictures of Marilyn Monroe or Superman, saw those students believing that it was a leader fish.

The bottom line is: when attempting to learn a new culture it is far better to surround yourself with that culture than create an island of the old one.

【1】Why does the author use a question in the first paragraph?

A. To raise a question.

B. To arouse readers’ awareness.

C. To introduce the topic.

D. To tell a story.

【2】The underlined word “pistachios” in the fourth paragraph refers to ______.

A. pictures B. volunteers

C. an image D. a kind of food

【3】From the passage we can infer that ______.

A. different images would change with different people

B. different cultures would affect how students look at the photo

C. with Chinese prompts, more students thought that it was a leader fish

D. with an American prompt, more students thought that the fish was being chased

【4】According to the research, which is a better way for a student in a foreign land to learn a new culture?

A. To surround himself with that culture.

B. To create an island of the old one.

C. To see random images of China.

D. To talk with a Caucasian avatar.
