You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy(嫉妒)? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don’t let jealousy spoil your relationships. Deal with it confidently and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that. Don’t approach them and ask why they are jealous of you unless of course you want to appear totally conceited (逞能), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise(妥協(xié)). Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.

1.According to the author, the jealousy emotion is________.

A. normal B. productive

C. destructive D. extreme

2.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?

A. How to solve the problem of jealousy.

B. Why we need to solve the problem of jealousy.

C. How to explain your jealousy to your friends.

D. Why it is hard to deal with the problem of jealousy.

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. There’s always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

B. Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

C. You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution

D. You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or self-development.

4.This passage is mainly intended for________.

A. female readers

B. students

C. teenagers

D. best friends

Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love.

But you may be misguided because things don't turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon ). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams ( 砰然關上 ) in your face. That’s bitter reality.

Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists (悲觀者) have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better.”

So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

And “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Alien, the American comedian says ,” Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”

There are pros and cons to being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.

1.What’s the passage mainly about?

A. The benefits of defensive pessimism.

B. How to become successful in life

C. The dangers of being too optimistic.

D. A book that has recently been published.

2.The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” ( Para.4 ) means ______.

A. it’s not a dangerous thing to do

B. there is no real proof

C. the cost is not so high

D. it is quite simple to understand

3.Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist believe?

A. Whatever will be, will be.

B. The glass is half full not half empty.

C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

4.The writer would probably describe himself as ______.

A. an optimist B. a realist

C. a defeatist D. a scientist

How to Deal With Losing in Sports

Winning and losing go hand-in-hand when it comes to sports. Great athletes never let the highs get too high,

or the lows get too low. The result of a match is uncertain. The only thing that is certain is the competition itself.

1. The result is just the result of all the hard work put in.

Congratulate your opponent (對手) after a loss. Respect your opponent because he put in as much work, or more than you. This shows respect for the opponent and respect for the contest.

Accept the fact that the loss is no one's fault. This is harder to do in an individual sport , but absolutely impor-tant in a team sport. 2. Don't get down on yourself. If competing in an individual sport , accept that losing is apart of competing and move on.

Examine why you lose the competition. Ask yourself if you did everything possible to prepare for the competition. Ask yourself if you gave it all during the competition. 3. This is crucial if competing in an individual sport. If competing in a team sport, recognize that everyone isn't perfect and examine the loss from the team opinion.

4. Practice more, and practice better. Correct whatever mistakes made during the match. Get bigger,

stronger, faster, smarter and do whatever it takes.

Seek out the support and encouragement of teammates and coaches. Don't allow yourself to think negatively.Avoid negative people. 5.__

Never accuse a competitor of cheating, even if it were true. Again, this will make you seem as if you are looking for excuses.

A. Don't put blame to anyone.

B. Work harder to get better.

C. Train hard to achieve your aim.

D. Winning is No. I for great athletes.

E. Great athletes love the competition.

F. Stay positive and trust your work value.

G. Analyze any mistakes you might have made.
