Long before, there was a large mountainside, where rested an eagle's nest with four large eagle eggs. One day   31    earthquake rocked the mountain, causing one of the eggs to roll down the mountain to a chicken farm   32    (locate) in the valley below. The chickens were kind enough to care for the eagle's egg, and an old hen volunteered to nurture (哺育) and raise the large egg.
One day, the egg hatched and a beautiful eagle was born. Sadly,  33   , the eagle was raised to be a chicken. Soon, the eagle believed he was nothing more   34   a chicken. The eagle loved his present family, but his spirit cried out   35    more. While playing on the farm one day, the eagle happened to notice a group of mighty eagles soaring in the skies. "Oh," the eagle cried, "I wish I could soar like those birds."
The chickens roared with   36   (laugh), “You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar."
The eagle continued staring at his real family up above,   37   (dream) that he could be with them. Each time the eagle would let his dreams   38   (know), he was told it couldn't be done. That is   39    the eagle learned to believe. The eagle, after time, stopped dreaming and continued to live like a chicken. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away.
You become what you believe you are. So, if you ever dream of becoming an eagle, follow   40    dreams... not the words of a chicken.

Walking is a popular form of exercises. It is an easy activity and offers a good way to improve physical fitness. Walking also gives many of the same benefits as other kinds of exercises.
Regularly, brisk walks helps a person’s body work better. Walking builds a stronger heart and lungs. The heart pumps blood through the body. It gets more rest between beats. Walking also seems to help protect the heart from heart diseases. The lungs work better because they take in and use oxygen more effectively. Walking can help __________, too. A quick fifteen-minute walk burns as many calories as jogging the same distance in half the time. Walking causes very few injuries. So there is also a lower “dropout” rate among walkers than among runners. People are more likely to continue a walking program. This gives a better chance for success.
Walking offers some mental benefits, too. It seems to make people feel better. Many walkers say they sleep better at night when they take regular walks. Others say they have a better attitude about life.
Walking offers many of the same physical and mental benefits as other forms of exercise, but walking offers some special advantages, too.
★ Almost everyone can walk. There are no special lessons of coaching. To become a serious walker, a person only needs to walk faster, farther and more often.
★ People can walk almost anywhere. There are no special playing fields or courts for walking. Sidewalks, streets, parks, fields and malls are excellent places for walking.
★ People can walk almost anytime. A person doesn’t need a team or a partner for walking. There is no “season” for walking. Most walkers walk in all kinds of weather.
★ Walking doesn’t cost anything. There are no special fees for walking. Good walking shoes and comfortable clothes are the only equipment that a walker needs.
Walking offers a form of exercise within the reach of nearly everyone. With a little time and effort, people can rediscover a valuable form of exercise and improve their fitness.

Labor force is defined as being the total number of people who are available to work and earn income. This definition includes everyone who is employed or seeking paid employment,so it includes employers and the self-employed.Labor is one of the country's resources which can be combined with other resources to produce the goods and services wanted by the community.
Although the size of the workforce depends a great deal on the size of the total population, there are several other influences which also affect it.The age distribution (分布) of the total population has a very marked effect on the available workforce. If the population has a high proportion of very young people or of those too old to work, then the available workforce would be lower than if there were an balanced spread age distribution. If the population naturally grows rapidly, the number of births greatly exceeds (超出) the number of deaths then as a total population increases proportion of the workforce declines.
Sometimes a population is described as aging which means that the birth rate is either falling or growing very slowly, and as people retire from the workforce there are insufficient numbers of young people entering it to replace those who are leaving it.In that situation the population is top-heavy with older people. So the percentage of the population in the workforce declines when there is either a rapid increase in births or a falling birth rate.
The age distribution of the population has several important effects on the economy. If the population is aging and there is an increase in the number of people retiring without a corresponding increase in the number entering the workforce, this raises the problem of the ability of the economy to provide a reasonable level of social services to the retired group. If the aged are to be cared for in special homes, finance must be available for that purpose. If the size of the workforce is small relative to the total population, then the government tax revenue(稅收) is relatively low and either the government has less money available to it or the workforce members have to be taxed more heavily.
72.In the passage “l(fā)abor force” is defined as ___________.
A.people who are available to work and earn income
B.self-employed people only
C.people who are looking for an employment
D.employers who create job opportunities
73.The conclusion which can be drawn from the second paragraph is that___________.
A.a(chǎn) natural growth of population leads to a balanced workforce
B.a(chǎn) large population does not necessarily mean a higher proportion of workforce
C.the larger the population, the higher the proportion of the workforce
D.the workforce will be lower, if the population has a balanced age distribution,
74.When a population is said to be aging,___________.
A.there are more people retiring than those entering the workforce
B.the birth rate must be growing
C.there should be an oversupply of workforce
D.There are more people entering the workforce than those retiring
75.The population which is top-heavy with older people ___________ of a country.
A.leads to the high rate of unemployment
B.results in low tax on the workforce members
C.a(chǎn)ffects employees’ incomes
D.places pressure on the economy

Australian scientists are trying to give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep in a bid
to cut the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs, kangaroo farts contain no methane(甲烷)and scientists want to transfer that bacteria to cattle and sheep who emit large quantities of the harmful gas.
While the usual image of greenhouse gas pollution is a billowing smokestack pushing out carbon dioxide, livestock passing wind contribute a surprisingly high percentage of total emissions in some countries.
"Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research scientist with the Queensland state government.
"And if you look at another country such as New Zealand, which has got a much higher agricultural base, they're actually up around 50 percent," he said.
Researchers say the bacteria also makes the digestive process much more efficient and could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
But it will take researchers at least three years to isolate the bacteria, before they can even start to develop a way of transferring it to cattle and sheep.
Another group of scientists, meanwhile, has suggested Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos.
The idea is controversial(爭議), but about 20 percent of health conscious Australians are believed to eat the national symbol already.
"It's low in fat, it's got high protein levels and it's very clean in the sense that basically it's the ultimate free range animal(散養(yǎng)動(dòng)物)," said Peter Ampt of the University of New South Wales's institute of environmental studies.
56. According to the passage, global warming is now mainly caused by _____ .
A. methane  B. carbon dioxide  C. livestock passing wind  D. not mention in this passage
57. What does the underlined phrase “the idea”(paragraph 9)refer to?
A. Australians should give kangaroo-style stomachs to cattle and sheep.
B. The bacteria could make the digestive process much more efficient.
C. Australians should farm fewer cattle and sheep and just eat more kangaroos.
D. The bacteria could potentially save millions of dollars in feed costs for farmers.
58.  How will Australian scientists solve the problem of global warming?
A. Eating more kangaroos.
B. Killing more cattle and sheep.
C. Letting cattle and sheep pass less wind.
D. Transferring the special bacteria in kangaroos’ stomachs to cattle and sheep.

A tour of the Wuyi Mountains in the northwest of Fujian Province is well worth your time. This place has clear rivers, beautiful forests on hills and peaceful villages. The UN honored much of Wuyi in 1999. Since then, more and more tourists have visited it and some have used air travel to get there. But you will be glad to know that it is still a special quiet place to see. Yunufeng, or Jade Lady Peak, is as beautiful as ever. Jiuquxi, a river in the shape of a snake in the southwestern part of the Wuyi Mountains, is still green and clear as it travels nearly ten kilometers to the flats (平地) below. On the river you can see many high hills or stop to climb a rock staircase to the top of Tianyoufeng. From there you might stand in a light warm rain as you look out over the beautiful valleys (山谷) below. Clouds come and go among the mountains and into the valleys. Birds sing cheerfully in the forest, perhaps calling out names from long ago. In another part of the river you can take a boat down a whitewater but be sure to wear a T-shirt and shorts as you will get wet! If you need to wear glasses, tie them to your head. Don’t change your mind about going down the river! Be brave! Some guides will help you on the boat and take care of you on the river. You can watch the green water become white as it begins to move more rapidly. You will probably feel both excited and nervous, but enjoy the ride! When your journey is finished, don’t forget to go to the village nearby and try the famous Wuyi rock tea. Then you can have a rest and think about the trip.

Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly loved children--all under the age of 5--and I'm upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example: They lock the doors to their children's bedrooms at night because the children might get out of their beds and wander around the house, and we may not hear them."
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty
word, all three are given hot sauce (辣醬汁) in the mouth. I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of disciplining them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
--- Gram
Dear Gram,
Children's bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare (噩夢).Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a good way to make them grow up to hate each other. Children who use "naughty" words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth-they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the "naughty" word.
---  Abby
49. Gram's daughter _____________.
A. is very strict with her children            B. does not love her three children
C. always punishes her children at night      D. often gives her children hot sauce
50. The passage doesn't say so, but from the lines you'll find that __________.
A. Gram likes writing letters               B. Gram likes watching children
C. Gram likes reading newspapers          D. Gram likes visiting her daughter
51. Gram writes the letter in order to ____________.
A. disclose her daughter's ways as a mother
B. criticize her daughter's ways as a mother
C. express her anger about her daughter s ways as a mom
D. get others' opinion about her daughter's ways as a mom
52. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Gram seems to care for her grand children very much.
B. Gram is against some of her daughter's ways as a mom.
C. Abby is for only one of Gram's daughter's ways as a mom.
D. Abby agrees with Gram about her daughter's ways as a mom.

Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other traditional subjects such as math and languages.
The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts, the next voice comes from the far right, a third from the other side.
The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing (沖突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in, but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm. The message: give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.
The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course. It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.
“The course isn’t there to make you happy,” Ernst Fritz-Schubert, the school principal, warned pupils, “but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.”
Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another.
The course is taught for three periods a week. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is no laughing matter.
“In the first period, we had to each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people,” said Fanny, 17.
Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some US universities, mainly based on positive thinking, using findings from studies of depression.
68. This passage is written to           .
A. introduce the happiness course in a German school
B. describe all the traditional courses in a German school
C. arouse the readers’ interest in happiness
D. help students struggle against being sad
69. According to the passage, the happiness course is__________.
A. created by the Willy Hellpach School
B. to make all the students happy all the time
C. required to be taken by the first year students
D. to help students discover the way to happiness
70. It can be inferred from the passage that__________.
A. the students’ self-respect can also improve happiness
B. the students just took the course as a laughing matter
C. the students can certainly become happy after the course
D. the students waste time learning something without value
