I have been a member of our local Community Youth Club for four years. So far I have took part in a lot of interested projects including activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized difference groups to help people in the need. We are particular proud of the most recent group we have created, that organizes regular visits to the local old people’s homes. The old people there tell us their personal story. Some of them are in poor health but very unhappy. My friends and I make up our mind to do more to help. Because our work is tiring, we think worthwhile.

I'm a blind teenager girl, but I am ashamed of it if it is known. I refuse to use a white stick and hate asking for help, and I couldn't bear people to look at me and think I am not like them. I must be a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there are all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. "I'm awfully sorry," I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn't stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.
1.The girl is unwilling to use a stick or ask for help because .
A. she thinks she might be cheated
B. asking for help will cost her money
C. she is normal and independent
D. she can't stand being found different from others
2. According to the passage, after the girl got off the bus that evening, she .
A. began to run away
B. knocked down a person as usual
C. hit a lamppost by accident
D. made several apologies to an old man
3. What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?
A. All cars have exactly the same sound.
B. No bus would stop to pick up a blind girl.
C. Some lorries may have the same sound as that of the bus.
D. It took long for the girl to recognize the sound of a bus.
4.At last the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping
A. to find people there
B. to hear more buses there
C. to find the bus by herself there
D. to hear his parents waiting for her

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016屆廣東揭陽(yáng)一中、潮州金山中學(xué)高三下學(xué)期第一次聯(lián)考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
In reflecting on the events of my life that have impacted me, I returned to the night of August 1, 2006. I found myself in a hall in New York City sitting by my mother, not at all tired, although we had flown the day before, and driven five hours to the city for “An Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp,” a charity event with readings by three authors. The excitement rushing through me kept me awake and thinking; I was standing and applauding a woman as she prepared to read.
The Harry Potter series was my gateway to my academic adolescence. I was so fascinated by the magic world that my mother began taking me to academic conferences focused on the books. Since 2005, I have attended presentations about the Latin origin of terms and spells, the ancient tales, and the idea of magic. These books opened my eyes to the whole world, and to knowledge itself. They kept my brain working over the summers. More importantly, they helped me adopt the ideas useful in school and beyond, that there is always another way to do something, or to understand an issue. With uncertainty and doubt come creative ideas and new ways to look at problems that may result in new, different, faster and easier solutions. And all this came from a little “magic” from a book that many people see as a series for children.
I also attended lectures about Ms. Rowling’s ability to beautifully write the story, with every small detail connected to something else, for example, details in books by Jonathan Swift to Chaucer to Dickens and Austin. I learned that like all great books, Rowling’s stories encouraged a connection across mind, body, and soul. Although the series has been criticized by those who believe it encourages bad behavior in children, I was able to hear discussions by those who claimed that these books teach wonderful messages if one gets its deeper meaning. It is my generation’s shared text; all college freshmen are familiar with the stories, and that gives us a set of common beliefs and ideas that help us start to learn new things.
1.What did the author do on the night of August 1, 2006?
A. He flew for a charity event.
B. He drove tiredly back home.
C. He listened to readings by some authors.
D. He enjoyed the excitement of driving.
2.The Harry Potter books led the author to ____.
A. getting jobs in summers
B. studying harder in school
C. writing books for children
D. viewing things in new ways
3. From the lectures, the author knew more about ____.
A. story writing skills
B. Rowling’s life stories
C. criticism against books
D. great authors in history
4. What can we know about the author?
A. She decides to write similar stories.
B. She intends to go to major in writing.
C. She doesn’t have her family’s support.
D. She may continue to read magic stories.

When we heard that our friend astronaut Gregory Chamitorff was going to be on board the last flight of the space shuttle Endeavour, we asked him if he would answer some questions from space. He said yes!
Here are our questions and Greg’s answers from space.
What’s the best thing about being in space?
Zero-gravity(失重) is by far the best thing about being in space. It does not really mean that there is no gravity. It means that we are moving around Earth in the same way the space station is moving around Earth. So we are floating inside the space station.
We travel around Earth once every 90 minutes. That’s 16 sunrises and sunsets every day. Really fast!
Inside the station, we can fly around like superman. It’s an amazing feeling, and I hope everyone gets a chance to fly in space someday to experience the wonder of zero-gravity.
What do you do for fun in the space shuttle?
There are so many things you can do in zero-gravity that are fun. Flying around is fun. Eating food that floats is fun.
I like to play like Superman and see how far I can fly without touching any walls. Another fun thing is to play with water. Most of all, the most exciting thing to do is to look out the window at our beautiful planet Earth below. You never get tired of seeing it like that, the way it really is and it can never be seen that way while standing on its surface.
What’s the coolest thing about being on a spacewalk?
Wow! Doing a spacewalk is cool. There is nothing more wonderful than floating in space in your own space suit. It’s amazing, and when you are doing a spacewalk, you are “out there” just floating in empty space, like the earth, like the moon, like the sun, like the space station. It’s not science fiction. It’s real.
1. Why does Greg think doing a spacewalk is the coolest thing?
A. He can wear his own space suit then.
B. He can see the moon when doing that.
C. He can see the earth by doing so.
D. He thinks it’s great flying in empty space.
2.Which of the following best shows how Greg feels?
A. Frightened B. Excited C. Sad D. Surprised
3.What can we know from the text?
A. Greg thinks doing a spacewalk is science fiction.
B. Greg floats inside the space station without gravity.
C. Everyone has the chance to experience the wonder of zero-gravity.
D. In the space shuttle, Greg can see the shape of the whole earth clearly.
