【題目】If you go into the woods with your friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you do get lost, this is what you should do.

Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people nearby to find you. Give them a signal by shouting or whistling three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help. You will be helped by others. Keep up the shouting or whistling, always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making noise for fun. They will let you know they have heard your signal. They will give two shouts, two whistles or two gunshots. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.

If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house and cover up the holes with branches with lots of leaves and grass.

What should you do if you get hungry or need to drink some water? You should have to leave your little branch house to look for a brook. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back. The most important thing to do when you are lost is stay in one place.

【題目】Sports are all about change. A team gets better. A kid practices more and swims a personal best or learns a new move on the basketball court. In 2006, two things happened that got me thinking about change—in sports and in life.

One of them is tennis champion Andre Agassi, who retired in 2006. Agassi was a terrific player who won 60 titles, including eight major championships(冠軍稱號). But his greatest accomplishment(成就)might have been how much he changed during his career.

When he was young, Agassi was a show off who seemed to care only about himself. He didn't train very hard, but he won matches because of his tremendous(極大的)talent.Eventually, though, injuries and his bad attitude caught up with him. He fell from No.1 in the world ranking to No.141.

So Agassi changed. He trained harder and became a world-class player again. More importantly, he changed as a person. He was nicer to fans and opponents(對手). He stopped thinking just about himself and started thinking about others. Through his Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation, he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He even started a school, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, for at-risk kids.

At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change. They mightvowto get in good physical shape, do better in school or be nicer to others. Changes such as those can be difficult. But they do happen. Just remember Andre Agassi: It wasn't easy, but he changed, and changed for the better.

1According to the writer, which of the following may be the greatest achievement for Agassi?

A. He once ranked No.1 in the world rankings.

B. He won 60 titles.

C. He changed much during his career.

D. He won 8 major championships.

2What does the underlined work “vow” in the 6th paragraph probably mean?

A. promise. B. agree. C. wish. D. prove.

3What do you know about Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation?

A. It is intended to help at-risk kids.

B. It is a charity school set up by Agassi.

C. Some disadvantaged kids can get help from it.

D. Agassi runs it with his prize money.

4What might be talked about in the paragraphs following this passage?

A. What achievements Agassi has made after he changed for the better.

B. How we can change for the better.

C. Another thing happened in life that got the writer thinking about change.

D. Some assessments(評價) about Agassi from different people.

Some students, however, are against it because they feel the demands of the cleaning program are a distraction. Some often show up late and hungry to their morning classes after rushing to sweep the campus and clean their rooms.

【題目】Picking a university is a tense period of asking yourself which institution is most relevant. That’s why university rankings play such a vital role in students searching for their next academic direction. Rankings are also an inescapable part of the reputation and brand image of universities. “No university website is complete without the claim to be in the top 100 for something or other,” reported the BBC. The reason is simple: Rankings help them to attract students, staff and research investment.

Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteria. But the main categories are the same: academic reputation, graduates' performance and faculty resources.

However, experts point out the ranking process isn't entirely reliable. Mark Kantrowitz, a US financial aid researcher, said university rankings were mostly just for show. He wrote in The New York Times. “It may give your parents better bragging rights, but that's about it.”

Moreover, it’s not difficult to see the limitations of university rankings. Many rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited (引用) by other researchers. It helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia, John O’Leary, a member of the QS academic advisory board, told The Gunrdian. Also, rankings such as QS mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students. “Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important,” said Phil Moss, an education and admissions consultant. “Advice from graduates or current students can be as valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree program. It can also add an element that rankings can never convey -- the actual emotion of a university experience.”

【1】Why do universities consider rankings important?

A. Rankings make them more appealing.

B. Rankings are students’ only reference.

C. Rankings can increase their academic level.

D. Rankings help them complete their websites.

【2】What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Academic research work.

B. The number of researches.

C. The way of ranking universities.

D. The limitation of university ranking.

【3】According to John O’Leary, what helps British and US universities rank well?

A. The wide use of English in academia.

B. Their outstanding qualities.

C. Their graduates’ excellent performance.

D. The academia’s favor to them.

【4】Besides ranking, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you're picking a university?

A. Investment in education.

B. Guidance from professors.

C. Information on websites.

D. Suggestions from students.
